Formed in Lytham, Lancashire, Divert Off Centre were the self-styled pioneers of alternative dance beat. The band was associated with the "Blackpool Rox" scene of the early eighties, however, their camped up performances and overblown lyrics set them apart from their punky/oi contemporaries.
Released a picture flexi disc in the spring of 1982 followed by the inclusion of one song on the Lightbeat Records' compilation, 'A Drop In The Ocean'.

After a couple of years of inactivity Divert Off Centre evolved into The October Group, moved to Amsterdam in '86 and put out a 12" single, '(first)' aka 'Colours'. "Colours" was favourably reviewed in the NME who described it as, "Compelling for it's subversive undertones." Although the band split up a year later their songs have turned up on the Messthetics compilations, and continue to receive airplay on alternative radio shows both in Europe and The States. Nord is a Japanese noise project, originally formed in 1979 by Satoshi Katayama and Hiroshi Oikawa. This lineup released a self-titled LP on Pinakotheca in 1980. The duo split in 1983 and both members continued to use the name Nord. The group's name was derived from Louis-Ferdinand Céline's 1960 novel "Nord".Oikawa put out several releases on his L∴S∴D∴ Records, but didn't play live. He ceased activities in the late 80s.

'L∴S∴D∴' was issued in a limited edition of 200 copies. The ambiguity of the cover (is it "LSD" by Nord or "Nord" by LSD?) had a profound effect on Japanoise. A young Masonna purchased this album thinking it was a German psych rock band called LSD, so you can imagine that the shock of expecting a traditional album only added to the profound effect it would have on him.

Gifted with a rhythm section that sounded like a garbage truck's exhaust backfiring and a guitarist who rarely felt the need to play chords, Australia's King Snake Roost played the kind of noise rock that let them easily fit into the roster of Amphetamine Reptile Records. They also confirmed Australia as a hotbed of blues-punk -yes, the influence of the blues can easily be discerned beneath all the garbage truck backfiring and dearth of guitar chords, and their vocalist did his best Delta-blues-scorched-black growl. Can't really claim these guys as some unjustly obscure geniuses; after all, their path had already been pretty well-trod before them (question: is Nick Cave an Australian "national hero" like Springsteen is in the States? Just wondering). Still, when you want some down n' dirty, defiantly art-free noise rock, they're a damn fine cup o' disease. Inspirational lyric (from "Trogman's Buried"): "He showed my mom his circumcision scars / Then he drowned in his own blood." Jonestown was an American noise rock band from Minneapolis originally consisting of Dan Gannon, Eric Miklasevics, Geoffrey Trelstad, Joe Trelstad and Tom Greenwood. They released one album and several singles in the early 90's.
John Peel played a track from their debut single, 'Genetics For Your Future', on his radio programme in the spring of 1990. He would play further material from the group until 1992 on his radio programmes and mentioned on his 15 July 1991 (Radio Bremen) show that he would love to see the band perform. The Instant Automatons were leading figures in the largely cassette-based U.K. Bad Music scene (a British DIY movement whose adherents made their music available on cassette, for free) of the late '70s. Between 1977 and 1982 , using a bedroom full of homemade gear plus some conventional instrumentation, core members Protag (later of Alternative TV, Blyth Power and Zounds) and Mark Lancaster (“somewhere between Cooper Clarke and Mark E. Smith”) forged a warped hybrid of traditional songcraft and lo-fi primitive post punk. Although cassettes were the band's native medium, they also appeared on several vinyl releases, including their own EP and various compilations featuring similar weirdos.

The Instant Automatons mixed the experimental and the conventional, with relatively traditional song structures often lurking beneath the surface weirdness -unlike some of their post-punk contemporaries who deconstructed the concept of "the song" itself. Again, Lancaster attributes some of this to practical considerations: "We were only just learning to play our instruments and our equipment was deficient, so even our best efforts to play 'properly' sometimes turned out quite bizarre." The band was never short of skewed rock and pop oddities.

Hit Parade was basically a one man anarchist band, the brainchild of P. Checkoff (aka Rik O’che) a member of the Anarchist Collective in Belfast. Being a left-wing socialist Checkoff’s songs were highly political by nature and concentrated on life in Northern Ireland. Subject matter ranged from the evils of television to H Blocks; the RUC to housing problems, and of course unemployment. “I wanted to make people aware that there’s more than a tribal sectarian war here, there are a lot of problems. It’s a multi-problematic place" stated Checkoff shortly after the release of the 'Nick Nack Paddy Wack' album in 1986.

Unsurprisingly, Hit Parade signed to the Crass label. Hit Parade produced electronic music made up of samples, loops and noises and were helped out in the studio by the likes of Eve Libertine, Penny Rimbaud, Jane Gregory and Flux Of Pink Indians and a host of other musicians, Checkoff said at the time “All the structure of the songs is done by me here in Belfast. But when I go into the studio in London it becomes more of a collected effort with different people putting in ideas.” The first release was the 'Bad News' EP in ‘83. This was followed by the 'Plastic Culture' 12” single in ‘84 and finally by the 'Nick Nack Paddy Wack' album. The album was recorded in ‘84 but due to the financial crisis Crass were in at that time, it wasn’t released until ‘86. Penny Rimbaud and Paul Ellis produced the album.

Upon the release of the E.P. 'Bad News', an electro-rap rant on such evils as television, H Blocks, the RUC and so on the Crass label in 1982, copies were seized by Special Branch at retail outlets, along with everything else on the Crass independent label, it managed to reach No.4 in the independent charts.

Before the album was released, Channel 4 produced and screened a TV documentary on the health of women in Northern Ireland. The documentary was called "Under The Health Surface" and the programmes soundtrack featured the music of Hit Parade, which can be found on the 'Nick Nack' LP in slightly different forms.
Games were a pioneering three-piece synth-pop outfit, formed in 1980 and consisting of Brendan Coyle (synthesisers, percussion, vocals), Colin Hughes (synthesisers, percussion, organ, vocals) and Steve Knott (synthesisers, guitar, vocals), from Wirral, UK. The same year, they self-released their first 7" single 'Childsplay' followed by a contribution of the two tracks "Unrest In The Real World" and "The Song" to the 'Street To Street Volume Two' LP compilation on Liverpool's Open Eye Records in 1981. Then the band fell apart with Steve moving on under the Games moniker including new band members. Their 7" single 'Dance This Way/Love Canal' still saw its release in 1981. Brendan and Colin moved on as Zephyr In The Swamp, Brendan also played in Some Detergents, and Colin in Sense Of Vision.

Games were truly ahead of their time and quite unique in that they played credible well-crafted pop songs in a purely electronic style. They did not ride the wave of synth-pop, they were the early creators. The stories of the band waiting outside Hessy’s famous music store in Liverpool waiting for their orders of the Roland SH-09 to be delivered, emphasised that they were the zealots of the synthesiser phenomenon which was to change pop music forever.
Looking back their commitment enthusiasm and industry was truly remarkable. Ironically the songs were not dry and mechanical. The crude monophonic synths and very early Dr. Rhythm drum machine were used creatively to produce memorable, dramatic and emotional pop songs. Games truly were visionaries and pioneers. They never got the credit they deserved because they were not in the right place at the right time and lacked the contacts good management could have provided.

This single was recorded at Open Eye Studio, Liverpool in 1981 and released the same year. The tracks were recorded by Dave Hutchman and Steve Knott on a Studer A80 8-track machine. Wayne Hussey played guitar; Brian Rawling played drums; Dave Hutchman played trumpet on "Love Canal"; and Steve Knott played synthesisers, sang, and wrote the songs (published by BMG-Chrysalis). The tracks were produced and mixed by the band, and the single was mastered by Tim Young at CBS in London. The label graphic and typesetting were done by Alex Plain and the sleeve graphic was drawn by Steve Knott (based on dance notation). The Games logo is based on the Omni typeface. The track "Love Canal" is an edited version, the full version contains an extra verse (unreleased).

Europeans was a New Wave band formed in Bristol in 1977 and split in 1979. Their sound reminsds a bit of early Ultravox, with faint impressions of Gary Numan on the synths.
Members were Jonathan Cole (vocals, guitar and synthesizers) and James Cole (drums).
This group should not be confused with the similarly named Europeans, another British new wave band formed in 1981 and disbanded in 1985.

Jon Klein was co-founder of the London based club "Batcave" and guitar for Siouxsie & The

1976 on the Bristol music scene by recording demos for The Pop Group,
and later in 1978-79 for Glaxo Babies. In 1978 he helped form the Europeans, which only released this single before the

array of artists including

Doc Corbin Dart is a musician from Lansing, MI, born March 16, 1953. He is best known as the vocalist for the punk rock band The Crucifucks, whom he fronted from 1981 until 1989 and again from 1996 until 1998. His lyrics are extremely anti-authoritarian and confrontational and the police, the US government, and Christianity are frequently his targets. He released his first solo album, 'Patricia' (named after his therapist), in 1990.

After The Crucifucks demise at the end of the 1980s, Dart opened a baseball card store and ran for mayor of Lansing, MI. He did not win but pledged his support to Lansing's incumbent mayor on the condition that the mayor build a rape crisis center (which Dart had pledged to do if he won) in Lansing (the incumbent won and built the crisis center after the election).

Years later, Dart began calling himself "26" and released an album under that name in 2004. Doc once gave up on swear words and refused to say his old band's name, but this attitude has since gone away. Dart has a mostly negative opinion on the first Crucifucks LP, referring to it as a "spoken word album with a little noise in the background".

Claustrofobia, from Spain, presented an arty and theatrical synth-pop, similar to Kan Kan or Artery, typified by "La Espia Que Me Amo", further enhanced with traditional flamenco guitars in "Sueños De Donna". "Sombras En La Alcoba" navigated towards a mixture of dark-wave and the noir soundtrack-theme, while "Amor Sensible" was even more eclectic, a blend of disco beats, ambient spooks, incantations, and a middle-eastern chorus. Eclecticism isn't a panacea though, and it's only till "Rapsodia Bajo El Volga" that we encounter a real highlight, a ghostly and cursed piano theme, accompanied by a dejected vocal delivery and desolate sound-effects. All the while, "Lagrimas Por Un Bolero" was their most violent moment, but again behind the paroxysmal wall of synthesizers and guitars lay a fondness for the traditional Spanish ballad.
BP. Service was one of Hungary's important industrial music groups. Industrial music in Hungary did exist behind the iron curtain in the 80's but in very marginal forms. Some of the bands are Art Deco, CMC and Falatra(x). Basically it was not until the early nineties that industrial groups could publish their music regularly in Hungary and that also more groups started to exist.

BP. Service consisted of Szabó György, Kósa Vince and Orbán Balázs. Szabo György is subsequently known for his graphic design and creating many of the posters for underground concerts in Budapest before the fall of the iron curtain. Lately those posters have received renewed attention and have been compiled in a book. Kósa Vince was also the founder of the group Art Deco and can be considered as one of the pioneers of Industrial music in Hungary.

This cassette that came out in 1990 contains two lengthy tracks of classic industrial sounds. It conceptually takes on the big city or metropole (in this case Budapest) as a place of noise where traffic, construction, dirt, automation and industry are part of the daily urban environment. A concept that can be seen often in this particular vein of industrial music, tracing back most notably to Berlin's finest Einstürzende Neubauten, but of course there are numerous examples. The music contains bleak Hungarian lyrics, sound-manipulations and the use of metal and other physical materials that are being used rhythmically.

Certainly, this is one of the most wanted brazilian records of the last times. A record that hides mysteries and many meanings and that gained its notoriety after the song "Kiuá" was used in the brilliant compilation called 'Outro Tempo' of Music From Memory.

Andreá Daltro studied popular, instrumental and erudite music for about 20 years and sings since 1971. Around 1979, the first version of 'Kiuá' was made for the percussion group of the Federal University of Bahia, using marimba, xylophone, among other percussive instruments, as well as guitar. With regency of the teacher Ernest Widmer. This presentation was made at the college rectory.

It is at this point that Andreá Daltro has his first connection with 'Kiuá', which would later become a classic through his voice. Curiously, the music score was lost and Andréa had to sing in court, and only had three rehearsals to improve her vocal extension in the song. At that moment the score of the song "strolled" by Andrea's imagination. It was a moment of strong impact for her. She managed to sing without making a mistake, even though she had rehearsed only three times. From this moment, Andréa begins to sing contemporary songs with vocal effects, which, according to her, were very lovely and memorable experiences.

In 1988, Andréa decided to launch his solo record, without financial resources and independently. She took out a bank loan to realize that dream, and never had any financial returns from that record, believe me. And he decided to make a new version of 'Kiuá', with use of DX7 synth and roland 606 electronic drums, different from the previous version (Sexteto do Beco), which was more acoustic. The record was recorded in three days.

The group of Bahia jazz called Grupo Garagem, very influenced by the musical aesthetics of Sexteto and the importance of the group in the musical scene in the State of Bahia, plays the record along with Andrea. The group consisted of Roberto Monsalve (synths), Ivan Basto (bass), Ivan Houl (drums), Roninho (sax) and an old friend of Andreá on guitar, Mou Brasil, in addition to former musical partners Sérgio Souto and Paulo Andrade.

The track "Kiuá" is incredible and has been very run on dance floors from around the world. However, there are other awesome tracks in the LP: "Ponte Aérea" and "Flutuando"are just two examples. Indeed, the track "Flutuando" is instrumental in the record by Sexteto do Beco. In this solo album of Andréa this song won an excellent vocalized version.

Andréa released this record in December 1988 and since then had never played that repertoire live. Only one thousand copies were pressed and the record was not distributed in Brazil, it was restricted to the city of Salvador. That's why it's so hard to find. She sang 'Kiuá' for the first time, thirty years later, last Saturday at the Dekmantel festival, in São Paulo. She participated in the Maria Rita (Stumpf) show.

'Venitian Rendezvous' was a live → ↑ → project. Focused on notions of the industrialization of Muzak, the sociological radiophonics of Easy Listening and the aesthetic categorization of 'beautiful music', the project saw → ↑ → live the dream of such ideals by becoming a respectable, suited, tamed and innocuous ensemble playing suitably neutered music. In the face of Minimalism's increasing chauvinism and Punk's escalating heroicism, 'Venitian Rendezvous' was the sound of bland conservatism musicalised. It dived deep into the Muzak ethos wherein identity was denounced. For → ↑ →, Muzak's emotive/expressive lack was a populist keystone for imaging art that moved beyond humancentric foibles.

Some of the songs were initially developed for the 'Caprice' project; other songs also appeared in the more severe Minimalism set. Live performances of 'Venitian Rendezvous' entailed the quartet dressed in sober yet colourful unstylish office worker suits-and-ties. The music was correspondingly tasteful. The only cover version was what composer Philip Brophy thought had to be the most innocuous and facile 'evergreen' at that moment in the late 70s: The Beatles' "Hey Jude". All the song titles were in Italian (courtesy of key → ↑ → members Ralph Traviato and Anthony Montemurro). The second edition of 'Venetian Rendezvous' was a repress released in May 31, 1979
in an edition of 500 with a different cover. Jonathan Anthony Rose (born 19 February 1951) is an Australian violinist, cellist, composer, and multimedia artist. Rose's work is centered in the experimental music known as free improvisation, where he has created large environmental multimedia works, built experimental musical instruments, and improvised violin concertos with accompanying orchestra.

One of Japan's more eccentric and intriguing extreme music exports of the late '80s and '90s, self-professed "progressive hardcore trio" Zeni Geva (their name derives from an ancient Japanese word for "money" and a corruption of the German "gewalt," or violence) forcibly fused elements of heavy metal, hardcore, industrial music, noise rock, and the avant-garde, gaining no small underground recognition in the process.

Having already made a name for himself via several experimental outfits (Absolut Null Punkt, YBO2) and collaborations with Merzbow earlier in the decade, vocalist, guitarist, and programmer K.K. Null (real name Kazuyuki Kishino) founded Zeni Geva in 1987, calling on guitarist Fumiyoshi Suzuki and drummer Ikuo Taketani to join him on debut album 'How to Kill', released on Null's own NUX Organization label. Said album also featured a short-lived vocalist named Elle who was replaced by bassist Bunsho Nishikawa come 1988's amusingly named 'Vast Impotenz' cassette EP, but he too would be gone by the release of 1990's watershed 'Maximum Money Monster' LP, which brought industrial discipline to Zeni Geva's savage sonic outbursts while introducing new guitarist Mitsuru Tabata (ex-Boredoms) and drummer Tatsuya Yoshida, briefly borrowed from Ruins. The Wishing Stones were a mid/late '80's indie-rock band formed from the ashes of early Creation band The Loft. The band, led by Bill Prince, backed up by John F. Niven, Stuart 'The Bull' Garden and Andy Kerr, played an ahead-of-its-time blend of early '70s classic US rock (The Band, Creedence) and late '70's New York No Wave (Television, The Voidoids). They released 3 singles via Jeff Barrett's pre-Heavenly label, Sub Aqua. 'Wildwood', their only album, was recorded for Sub Aqua but remained unreleased for several years after the label had folded. By the time Heavenly were up and running and 'Wildwood' was released, the band had split. Bill Prince moved into journalism (GQ, Q), Andy Kerr joined the much tipped Spirea X and Stewart 'The Bull' Garden worked at Truck Festival. John Niven ran Southpaw Recordings, home of Mogwai and The Zephyrs. Basically a duo consisting of vocalists/keyboard players Myke Reilly and Charly Brown, the San Francisco-based Voice Farm debuted in 1982 with 'The World We Live In', an album consisting of their half-instrumental, half-poetic songs put to synthesizer shadings and light percussion. Five years later, Voice Farm returned for a self-titled album on Ralph Records; Reilly and Brown, though still just a duo, added a guitarist and several backing vocalists for a dance-oriented sound that still made heavy use of the keyboards. After another long gap between recordings, 'Bigger Cooler Weirder' was released in 1991. 'Dreaming Spires' is the only full-length released by synth duo Two, formed in London in 1981 by Gill Benn and Iain Sanders. It has some experimental tracks as well, like "It Won't Work", a 15 minutes track that occupies the whole B Side with its minimal, murky electronic pulses and atmospheres.
Don't let the cheesy sleeve fool you. Interesting but quite hard-to-find album on Future Records.
