Zebra Stripes – Zebra Is Her Name [LP] (1989, Dionysus Records)

Zebra Stripes (aka Zaida Gutierrez, now Zaida Clark) was a regular on the Los Angeles area Garage scene. Her track "Intro 66" originally appeared on VOXX Records' 'Battle of the Garages Volume 3' that spotlighted the Southern Callifornia Garage / Psychedelic rock scene of the mid 80's. This track was produced by Yard Trauma / Unclaimed member Lee Joseph to be the opening track for the new compilation. The track was so popular it was adopted by local KROQ DJ Rodney Bingenheimer (Rodney on the ROQ) to be one of his theme songs for many years. The success of "Intro 66" led to the Dionysus Records LP 'Zebra Is Her Name' which featured Lee, members of Thee Fourgiven, The Miracle Workers, and others backing Zaida on a number of tracks. Yard Trauma – Yard Trauma [LP] (1984, Bona Fide Records, Dionysus Records)

The Meat Puppets weren't the only rock band to emerge from Arizona during the '80s, as proven by the emergence of another act, Tucson's Yard Trauma. Founding members Joe Dodge (guitar, vocals) and Lee Joseph (bass) had previously done time together in a precursor band, Jonny Sevin, before forming Yard Trauma at the end of 1982. Although hardcore punk was taking hold locally at the time, Yard Trauma decided to experiment with such odd sounds as drum machines played through fuzzboxes, shortwave radios, and tape loops merged with poetry read on top of the wall of noise. After doing a few shows as a duo, a real drummer and a keyboard player were added to the lineup in time for a debut single, 'Some People b/w No Conclusions', as well as a full-length, 'Yard Trauma', aka 'The Red Album', before splitting up in January of 1984 when Joseph relocated to Los Angeles. The Wild Giraffes – I Don't Know About You / Crazy Mixed-Up World [7''] (1979, Neck Records)

The Wild Giraffes should have been rock stars. Well, they were, nearly, in greater Cleveland, but were never able to take their fantasic live show to where they could have gotten a big break. The band was started by Mentor high school students, primarily Edgar Reynolds on lead guitar, and lead singer Chris King. Al McGinty (drums), Chris Burgess (bass), and Jeff Ianinni (guitar) were the rest of the fab five.

The Wild Giraffes' influences were the classic 60s rock and roll mixed with The Flamin' Groovies, Raspberries, Ramones, etc. They weren't really punk, not too pop, and certainly not AOR rock and roll. The band slowly build up a following to the point where they wanted to record. In 1977, Cleveland's rock and roll scene was still running on the fumes from the great early 70s explosion, but there were no real record labels in town, especially ones catering to bands playing fresh original songs, so they started their own label, Neck records.

The first 45 was 'New Era', a title that suggested the new era of the punk generation, but really, as any true Clevelander would know, referred to the landmark stripper club of the same name downtown. Over the next year or so the reputation and popularity grew to where they were getting opening gigs for national bands like the Ramones. They made two more 45s, each one more successful than the previous. The 1978 45 was titled 'Ensembles and Majorettes' on the sleeve but included the songs "Love Me" and "When I Found Out". By this time Dave Ivan was the bassist and Mike Terrell replaced Ianinni. The 1979 45 was "I Don't Know About You" and a cover of Little Walter's "Crazy Mixed Up World". One of The Wild Giraffes' specialties was choosing a few great songs to cover, and this was one of them. [SOURCE: BUCKEYE BEAT]

The Visit – All The Walls [7''] (1983, Future Records)

The sleeve art gives the impression that there's something proggy or psychedelic going on within those grooves. Maybe a painting of an apocalyptic beach scene featuring a psychotic-looking cherub with a shovel and bucket standing over a woman who's either being buried or dug up (unclear which) all done in 60s Spiderman cartoon colors will do that. But that's not what's inside though, it's more like Bauhaus, minus the heavy drama-goth. The Visit were responsible for just this one single, but they certainly sound like they were trying to make the most of it to make an impression. Both tracks are surprisingly well written, produced and performed. "All The Walls" has some of the loudest drums heard on a post punk record not made by Killing Joke. The guitars are dense and propulsive throughout and both tracks sport decent hooks. Since no info on the band could be found, it's difficult to know who's doing the vox, but he's a dead ringer for Peter Murphy, adding to the Bauhaus comparisons. Similarities aside, this is quite a good, albeit very obscure, post punk single. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC]

Universal Order Of Armageddon – Demo [Cass] (1993, Vermin Scum Records)

Universal Order of Armageddon was an American hardcore band, formed in September 1992. By early 1993, after quickly gaining a small but devoted following, they recorded and toured the East Coast. They became known for their extreme short chaotic performances, which sometimes resulted in complete destruction. Larry Livermore (founder of Lookout! Records) was so impressed by their live performance that he stated in a magazine column that punk bands should take note of U.O.A. and bring back this type of energy into punk rock. Drummer Brooks Headley once said, "Our live shows are like turning on a vacuum cleaner for like ten minutes". They went on to release records on indie labels such as Kill Rock Stars, Gravity, and Jade Tree. They toured the United States several times in 1993 and 1994 in support of those releases before breaking up in late 1994. Following the band's demise, guitarist Tonie Joy and bassist Anthony Scott Malat started the group The Great Unraveling, and Headley went on to play in the group's final lineup. Vocalist Colin Seven moved to Seattle in 2007. He spent from October 2009 to May 2010 riding his motorcycle from Seattle to Argentina. The four original members of the group played a series of shows in July 2010. This was followed by further live performances announced for the following January. [SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA]

The Twenty Second Sect – Get That Charge [LP] (1988, Greasy Pop Records)

Liz Dealey and The Twenty Second Sect were part of a conglomeration of bands centered around Adelaide (a long days drive along the coast going west from Melbourne) down in south Australia. Formed in 1986 as a studio-only band to release the debut single, 'The Wailing House'. For that single, the band consisted of Liz Dealey and three members of Lizard Train. Liz formed a new band, The Twenty Second Sect, around July 1987 when they actually began to play live. Liz retained the vocal spot with Orietta on guitar, Michael Tohl on bass, Scott Nadebaum on drums, and Sharron Wetherall from Bloodloss on guitar. By late 1987 Sharron had left and was replaced by Bloodloss drummer Andrew Foley on guitar. 'Get That Charge' is a brilliant slice of Adelaide punk that hits you hard and never outstays its welcome. Seven aggressive tunes that pack melody, dynamics and good musicianship without sacrificing their rawness. Liz Dealey should be as well known as Nick Cave or Tex Perkins. Sleep Chamber – Admit To Desire [Cass] (1985, Inner-X-Musick)

Sleep Chamber is an American industrial band fronted by John Zewizz. The band is known for using S&M, bondage and magic imagery on their artwork, during their performances, and within their lyrics. Formed in 1981 by high school friends Zewizz, Eugene Difrancisco, and Phil Brosseau, over the years the Sleep Chamber lineup has changed many times with Zewizz being the sole permanent member, stating that the constant lineup changes are because Sleep Chamber is not a "band", but rather a "concept".

Difrancisco and Brosseau had fronted a band called The Product; Zewizz produced their sole single. When The Product folded, Difrancisco and Brosseau began a band called Daze of Trance. Zewizz occasionally helped out with Daze of Trance, even playing on a cassette release as part of the band. Sometime between 1981 and 1982, Sleep Chamber came into existence, with Zewizz as the frontman. Their earliest works were experimental and electronic/industrial in nature. Live Sleep Chamber performances were quickly labeled as resembling a "Black Mass", with smoke (containing a special blend of incense) billowing out of machines, and the band donning black bondage masks while performing on stage. Raw Sex, Pure Energy – Stop The War / Give Sheep A Chance [12''] (1982, Island Records)

Neneh Cherry is the daughter of West African percussionist Ahmadu Jah and artist Moki Cherry. Raised by her mother and trumpeter stepfather Don Cherry in Stockholm and New York City, Cherry left school at age 14, and in 1980 relocated to London to sing with the post-punk group The Cherries. Following flings with The Slits and The Nails, she joined the experimental funk/post-punk outfit Rip Rig + Panic and appeared on the group's albums 'God' (1981), 'I Am Cold' (1982), and 'Attitude' (1983). During this period, she also recorded with New Age Steppers and as one-third of the one-off group Raw Sex, Pure Energy. Their only output, this 'Stop The War' single, has plenty of raw underground charme, with a young Neneh Cherry dropping old school raps, analog drum machine, lots of funk and animal noises. This really could be considered a forgotten classic. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC]
