The Moodists – Double Life [12''] (1985, Red Flame)

The Moodists were a Melbourne, Australian post-punk band that formed in 1980, when Dave Graney, Clare Moore and Steve Miller of punk group Sputniks moved from Adelaide to Melbourne. They added bass player Chris Walsh and later added guitarist Mick Turner. After recording two singles and a six track EP for the Au Go Go label in Melbourne they relocated to London.

They then recorded the albums 'Thirstys Calling' (1984) and 'Double Life' (1985), a nice mix of Captain Beefheart with the post-punk of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. The band supported Public Image Limited on their 1984 tour of Australia, along with punk band Box of Fish. They returned to Australia in 1985 for six months (Turner quit and reconvened his earlier group Fungus Brains; he would later form Dirty Three) and then travelled again to the UK. During this time they toured extensively through Northern Europe and also made a short tour of the United States.

King Snake Roost – Things That Play Themselves [LP] (1989, Aberrant Records)

Gifted with a rhythm section that sounded like a garbage truck's exhaust backfiring and a guitarist who rarely felt the need to play chords, Australia's King Snake Roost played the kind of noise rock that let them easily fit into the roster of Amphetamine Reptile Records. They also confirmed Australia as a hotbed of blues-punk -yes, the influence of the blues can easily be discerned beneath all the garbage truck backfiring and dearth of guitar chords, and their vocalist did his best Delta-blues-scorched-black growl. Can't really claim these guys as some unjustly obscure geniuses; after all, their path had already been pretty well-trod before them (question: is Nick Cave an Australian "national hero" like Springsteen is in the States? Just wondering). Still, when you want some down n' dirty, defiantly art-free noise rock, they're a damn fine cup o' disease. Inspirational lyric (from "Trogman's Buried"): "He showed my mom his circumcision scars / Then he drowned in his own blood." [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC]

Hi Sheriffs Of Blue – Hi Sheriffs Of Blue [12''] (1982, Jimboco Records)

The No Wave era of NYC was a short, dark flash of energy that was extinguished almost as soon as it was noticed. It happened so goddamn fast that if you missed the imaginal cut-off for inclusion by a few weeks, you were forever written out of the picture. The Hi Sheriffs were just outside our temporal markers, despite the fact they'd played Tier 3, the Mudd Club and everywhere you'd think would matter. But look, they were as second gen No Wave as The Raybeats, Bush Tetras and 8 Eyed Spy. Shit moved fast. The fact that the Hi Sheriffs were devolved from The Girls did not mean shit. They were perhaps only weeks too late to make the No Wave cut (something they'd immediately wanted to hit after The Girls played Tier 3 with Basquiat's band, Gray). They were like a crazed version of DNA playing the blues. Even Lydia Lunch liked 'em. She did not record with them until later but even she knew she was beyond No Wave at the point of 8 Eyed Spy. It was a weirdly specific scene in many ways. But sonically, it bore lots of fruit. And one of the first, best and most blues-wailingest of its proponents was the Hi Sheriffs Of Blue. Black Snakes was a punk blues and garage punk band formed in 1986 in New York and disbanded in 1988. Members were Darin Lin Wood (guitar, '68 Comeback, Blacktop, Fireworks, Jackknife, Red Devils); Richard Kern (guitar), American photographer and filmmaker, born in 1954 in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina and based in New York City; Jack Natz (vocals, bass, Cop Shoot Cop, Excop, Lubricated Goat, Red Expendables); and Patrick Blank (drums), first drummer for US punk band The Undead. His intense drumming style defined the early sound of the band. Sadly, Patrick died in a diving accident in the Dominican Republic in 2001. Jim Thirlwell mixed the album under the name Bubba Kowalski. Lots of feedback and howling vocals.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds ‎– More Pricks Than Kicks [CD, Unofficial] (1995, Pseudo Indie Label)

Formed after the breakup of The Birthday Party in 1983, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds became one of the most original and celebrated bands of the post-punk and alternative rock eras in the '80s and onward. Playing music that meshed with the dark, multi-layered narratives of Cave's lyrics, The Bad Seeds created sounds that were physically and emotionally powerful, but with a sense of dynamics and drama that set them apart from their peers. While plenty of musicians would move in and out of The Bad Seeds' lineup over the years, throughout their history they were always a musical force as powerful as their leader.

As the cult of Nick Cave grows, more and more non-Australian music fans may discover The Boys Next Door and their lone album, 1979's 'Door, Door'. Singer Nick Cave, guitarist / multi-instrumentalist Mick Harvey, bassist Tracy Pew, and drummer Phil Calvert were disaffected, dissatisfied teenagers growing up in a middle-class section of Melbourne, listening to hard rockin' glam acts like The Sensational Alex Harvey Band and Alice Cooper. They uprooted themselves from the "right" side of the tracks and settled down comfortably with the junkies and prostitutes in an appropriately run-down area. As the rising tide of punk began to crash on Australia's shores, the Boys' realized that this was the proper direction for their chaotic, anarchic energies, and homegrown punk heroes like The Saints and Radio Birdman greatly influenced their musical direction.
