Nautilus Pompilius ‎– Князь Тишины = The Prince Of Silence [CD] (1994, Moroz Records)

Sverdlovsk-Leningrad hybrid Nautilus Pompilius became legendary for its abrupt ascension to celebrity at the end of the 1980s, making a name for Sverdlovsk (now Ekaterinburg) as the third capitol of Soviet rock. Its sound originated in the Ural Mountains but found a home among innovative Leningrad groups like Akvarium and Kino. Charismatic frontman Vycheslav Butusov and songwriter Ilya Kormiltsev were the two constant members of Nautilus. Other musicians, mostly fellow disciples of the Sverdlovsk scene, came and went throughout the group's almost 20-year history. In 1989, at the pinnacle of their fame, 'Knyaz' Tishyinyi' ("Prince of Silence") was a bona fide hit. The group took its charisma onto the silver screen, appearing in two films by Ural director Andrei Balabanov, "Ranshe Bylo Sovsem Drugoe Vremya" ("Before Was a Different Time") and "U Menya Net Druga" ("I Don't Have a Friend"), and a Finnish documentary about Soviet rock, "The Sickle and the Guitar". Звуки Му ‎– Простые Вещи [2XCD] (1996, Moroz Records, Отделение Мамонов)

Zvuki Mu was a band from Moscow, founded in 1981 by singer Pyotr Mamonov. For some years it was just a part-time project, as the band didn't have a professional equipment, nor the possibility to record any song. Anyway, in 1988 their friend Vasily Shumov, leader of the experimental post-punk band Tsentr, offered Mamonov the chance to produce an album, which he obviously accepted. Zvuki Mu recorded around twenty songs during these sessions, most of which were written in the course of the 80s. 'Prostye Veshchi' (1988) lasts over 79 minutes and was released in the black market as a two-tape set. Reissued on CD in 1996, it is a still enjoyable anthology of new wave pieces with huge bass lines, funky guitars, jazz fusion keyboards, and pompous declamations. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC]

Звуки Му ‎– Грубый Закат [CD] (1995, Moroz Records, Отделение Мамонов)

Led by singer, songwriter, poet, actor, and all-around artistic troublemaker Pyotr Manonov, Zvuki Mu was one of the few bands of the so-called "Russian Revolution" in late-'80s pop music that merited more than a casual glance from Western audiences. (As opposed to bands like the remarkably dull hard rockers Gorky Park). Formed in 1981 by Manonov, who was already a published author in his early 30s, Zvuki Mu (literally "sounds of moo", an absurdist name that suits Manonov's playful lyrical style) performed increasingly above-ground gigs in Russia and Eastern Europe throughout the '80s. By 1989, as Mikhail Gorbachev's glasnost policies were taking effect and the Iron Curtain was starting to crumble, Zvuki Mu began to make a name for themselves in the West, to the point that Brian Eno signed the group to his own Opal label and produced their first album, 1989's 'Zvuki Mu'.

The group's unique blend of jazz, rock, Zappa-like weirdness, and subtle political content was quite popular among the more adventurous fringes of the Western pop scene, but a greater breakthrough never came. After the U.S.S.R.'s collapse, Russian rock & roll lost most of its exotic qualities and Western attention wandered elsewhere. Another Opal album, 'Zima' (Winter), followed in 1991, but all Zvuki Mu albums after that were released only in Eastern Europe, where the band maintain a rather large fan base. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC]

Николай Коперник ‎– Родина [CD] (2005, Not On Label)

Николай Коперник ("Nicolaus Copernicus", also known as Nikolay Kopernik) is a Russian art-rock / new wave / psychedelic / neo-romanticism band from Moscow, founded in 1981 by singer, guitarist and composer Yuri Orlov. The group gained a wide popularity after the release of their debut reel-to-reel album 'Родина' ("Motherland") in 1986. Nicolaus Copernicus became one of the most original and eccentric projects on the Moscow underground rock scene, alongside with such bands as Zvuki Mu and Center. They had a chance to rehearse and work with many Western musicians, including Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa and Chrissie Hynde. They also played on the same stage with The Sugarcubes at the large rock-festival Lituanika in Vilnius, Lithuania. The band went on a permanent hiatus in 1993 but was revived by Yuri Orlov in 2000s with a new line-up. [SOURCE: DISCOGS]
