Another Green World – Adjusting The Mirror [Cass] (1992, Not On Label)

'Adjusting The Mirror' is a fairly obscure cassette release from 1992, issued in the UK under the name Another Green World. It was self-released, which usually means it was produced independently and likely in a small batch. In the early ’90s, that kind of DIY cassette culture was still very much alive, especially within experimental, ambient, and underground electronic circles. Artists would often duplicate tapes themselves or in very limited runs, distribute them by mail, or sell them at small gigs and through niche record shops. Because it wasn’t put out through a major or even well-known independent label, there isn’t a huge amount of documentation available. That scarcity is part of what gives releases like this a certain mystique. They tend to live on through collector databases and word of mouth rather than mainstream music archives.

Stylistically, the project is generally associated with electronic and ambient sounds, with touches that have been described as downtempo and possibly influenced by folk or world textures. That suggests something atmospheric and layered rather than song-based in a traditional pop sense. Early ’90s ambient and experimental electronic music often leaned toward mood and texture -synth washes, field recordings, minimal rhythms, and introspective tones- so it likely sits somewhere in that sonic territory.

The name "Another Green World" can definitely cause confusion, since most people immediately think of Brian Eno’s 1975 album of the same title. However, this cassette is completely unrelated. The shared name appears to be more of an artistic nod or coincidence rather than a direct connection to Eno’s work.

Jabir – Vuelo Por Las Alturas De Xauen [Cass] (1988, EGK)

Both a polymath and erudite musician, Jabir (real name, Francisco Javier Sánchez González) decided to pay homage to the marriage of spirituality and science inspired by the legacy of Al-Andalus, the muslim Spanish civilisation. For that aim, he relied on a vast array of acoustic instruments (ney, violin, ud, bendir and daf), as well as on digital synthesizers and a complex system of computers able to generate aleatory melodies in Middle Eastern scales. He released two albums, the cassette 'Vuelo por las Alturas de Xauen' (1989, EKG) -old, crude-sounding synths and flute, violins or drums over looped synth melodies, over background noise; a beautiful, calming source of forgotten mysticism-, and the LP 'Vuelo por las Alturas de Alhambra', originally published in 1988 on Discos Esplendor Geométrico and a hidden gem in the catalogue of this influential Spanish label. The album unfolds a series of subtle and mesmerising compositions, and it's a recommended listening for those into the most narcotic side of Muslimgauze, the Dariush Dolat-Shahi's lps on Folkways, Jon Hassell's "Fourth World" explorations or even the recent work of contemporary Iranian experimentalists like Sote and Saba Alizadeh. Orquesta De Las Nubes – Manual Del Usuario [LP] (1987, Grabaciones Accidentales)

Orquesta De Las Nubes formed in 1980 by Suso Saiz and percussionist Pedro Estevan when the two met whilst studying a course on Techniques of Contemporary Composition in Madrid. Sharing a curiosity for American minimalist and Non-Western music, the pair began to share music through many listening sessions, during which the idea slowly evolved to try and make music together. Pedro’s partner at the time, soprano singer María Villa, would later join the two on vocals. With Suso’s sparse use of guitar loops, synthesizers, and drum computers in combination with the hypnotic percussion of Pedro Estevan and the wordless drifting vocals of María Villa, Orquesta De La Nubes would evolve as a group with a truly unique musical language; an ethereal and almost otherworldly musical realm.

In their third album 'Manual Del Usuario', released in 1987 by GASA, one can perceive a much more elaborate and better production work than on the first two. They have truly magical moments that make you believe you are listening to the Mexican musician Jorge Reyes, in his excellent album 'Comala'. Jorge Reyes, when he was in Spain in the mid-eighties, became friends with the members of Orquesta De Las Nubes, and the album 'Manual Del Usuario' was also released in Mexico under Jorge's label, Producciones Exilio. Peter Westheimer – Move [LP] (1985, Alligator Records)

Peter Westheimer presents music to inspire, travel, laugh, feel, reflect, dance, enjoy and sees music as an agent of change. He covers genres ranging from World, Electronic, Dance, Asian/Middle Eastern House, Ambient, Neoclassical and original film music soundtracks. His music has been described as "cool and clear, warm and inviting, phenomenal, intertwining musical textures and rhythms, quirky and inventive, exciting and intriguing".

Peter Westheimer's musical journey since 1982 includes releasing 6 music albums, video clips and composing music for two feature films, many television documentaries and multimedia installations. 'Laminex Lovers' (1982), his first record release, is still receiving acclaim as one of Australia's cutting edge synth pop records. The clip to "Move", the title track of the 1985 album was acclaimed as a top 10 video clip that year.

Peter Westheimer grew up in Melbourne Australia and as a 4 year old was 'excited' by 'Music for the People' orchestral concerts in the Fitzroy Gardens. He went on to play violin from age 7 to 19 and in 1967 became leader of the Victorian Junior Symphony Orchestra and violinist in the Australian Youth Orchestra. Then came an 'epiphany' of moving far away from the musical and social confines of the classical music scene to lots of improvisation with other musicians as well as acting and writing with progressive theatre groups. This morphed into playing electric guitar, keyboards, synthesizer, sitar and flute, writing songs, singing and playing in bands in the late 70's and early 1980's after which began his recording career. Orior – Elevation [7''] (1979, Crystal Groove Records)

Orior was an obscure British duo formed by Jeff Sharp a.k.a. Clip on synthesizer, harmonies, mixing, treatments and guitar, and Tom Barwood, active between 1979 and 1983. They only released the 'Elevation' 7" in 1979 on the London-based Crystal Groove label, before sinking into oblivion. They opted for a hazy and thick Ambient / Space Music synth sound. Lives Of Angels ‎– Alternative Programming [Cass] (1987, Color Disc)

Lives of Angels was the brainchild of Gerald O’Connell from London, England. In 1977 he joined his first band Mystery Plane, led by school mate Mark Harvey and later joined by his soon-to-be wife Catherine. Due to a lack of resources it was impossible to do the kind of music that was in his head. So he built his own studio. Gerald branched off in 1980 forming Lives of Angels as an outlet for his own compositions. Influenced by the Krautrock sounds of Neu! and Amon Duul II as well as US psychedelic rock, Lives of Angels crafted their own unique post-punk sound. Gerald says he has been influenced by, in no particular order: Van Dyke Parks; Tangerine Dream ('Zeit'); passing trains; The Grateful Dead (especially "Dark Star" in all its iterations); Ash Ra Tempel; Van Morrison ('Astral Weeks'); Steve Reich; Michael Rother; Albert Ayler; Neu! ("Hallogallo"); Glenn Branca; the sound of the city; distant playgrounds; late sixties San Francisco Psychedelia; Debussy; aircraft engines; Bulgarian folk song; Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan; Philip Glass; Wagner; Vaughan Williams; the dance bands of Zaire, especially Dr. Nico and Tabu Ley; Klaus Schulze; Schubert; Ornette Coleman; Arnold Bax; waterfalls; footsteps in cathedrals. Ilitch ‎– P.T.M. Works [Cass] (1980, Eurock)

Like other 1970s European electronic rock artists from Heldon to Conrad Schnitzer, Ilitch owes more to the avant-garde experiments of Stockhausen and Xenakis than to the rock and roll of Chuck Berry or even The Beatles. Ilitch came out of France, was the work of mostly one person, Thierry Müller, using unconventional guitars as well as keyboards and other electronics to create strange textures and sounds. Initially he worked completely solo but by late 1975 he was being helped by Ruth Ellyeri. By 1980 Ellyeri, on guitars, vocals and electronics, became more integral to the Ilitch sound, and Müller occasionally added in synth player Philippe Doray and saxophonist Patrick Dubot into Ilitch as well. The same year under the Ilitch name was released the cassette 'PTM Works' (Patrick and Thierry Müller’s works) on Eurock label. The project eventually became the group Ruth (though Ruth Ellyeri wasn’t a part of it), as Müller began collaborating with many more musicians for recordings done in 1984 and 1985. Ruth’s music was far more polished and accessible, adding a quirky new wave twist to Müller’s textured guitar and synth treatments. [SOURCE: ILICHTMUSIC.COM]
