Virginia Astley – Promise Nothing [LP] (1983, Les Disques Du Crépuscule)

Astley is more widely known for the people she's played with than her own records. A classically trained British pianist and flutist who also happens to be Pete Townshend's sister-in-law, she contributed piano to Townshend's "Slit Skirts," and has played sessions for Siouxsie & the Banshees. Her late-'70s band, The Ravishing Beauties, also included future Dream Academy singer Kate St. John and Nicky Holland, who would work with Tears for Fears and Ryuichi Sakamoto. Astley's sparse body of work combines ambient, even experimental textures and song structures with her pretty soprano vocals. Producing three albums, her records are recommended to listeners looking for intriguing ambient British pop who find the Cocteau Twins and the 4AD stable too wimpy and pretentious. 'Promise Nothing' collects two EPs: 'A Bao A Qu' (1982) on the side 1 and 'Love's A Lonely Place To Be' (1983) on the side 2, plus the track "Futility" originally released on the New Musical Express' 'Mighty Reel' cassette tape compilation from 1982. The Ullulators – Banging Bones [Cass] (1995, Better Day Tapes)

The Ullulators are an expansive and alternative space rock / dub / world music fusion band with roots in the UK festival scene, with history going back to the late 80's. In the early days of Ozric Tentacles they had two guitarist, Ed Wynne and Gavin Griffiths. But 'this town ain't big enough for the both of us'. Gavin formed The Ullulators, sharing some bandmembers with Ozrics. Their music was considered awesome, and the tapes released at the time 90 minute gems, 'Beyond The Gates Of Ull', 'Share A Clam' and 'Monads of Mangonia'. There was also a vinyl album, 'Flaming Khaos', and a track on the 'Feed Your Head' Planet Dog compilation. Contrary to other accounts, The Ullulators played for many years after their surpposed demise, playing a small festival each summer, Having achieved cult status over the years, the band continues to release new material and spread it's diverse and expansive musical wings in the digital age. Truss, + Instruments – 79/80 [Cass] (1980, Not On Label)

Plus Instruments' existence spans over the last 3 decades in a variety of constellations. Often also credited + Instruments the project was established in 1978 by Truus de Groot in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, as she tinkered with toy and electronic instruments in her flat -amidst the explosion of Punk Rock. Even though Truus was very active in that genre and “New Wave” as well, the more experimental side gradually took over and the concept of Plus Instruments was born.

Skeptics – Chowder Over Wisconsin [12''] (1983, Flying Nun Records)

Skeptics were a New Zealand post-punk band from 1979 to 1990. They became notorious in 1987 for an unusually graphic music video entitled "AFFCO". Skeptics' first recording appeared in 1982 on 'The Furtive Four Three Piece Pack', a 12" compilation EP which also featured The Bongos, The Dabs and The Prime Movers. They toured New Zealand on the Furtive Records "Three Piece Pack" tour. The tour was to be followed by a five track EP, 'Pyronnists Selections' which was to be released on Propeller Records, Furtive's parent label, but the master tape was stolen from the Propeller office and the EP was never released.

In 1983, Skeptics released the EP 'Chowder Over Wisconsin', recorded live in a school library. From 1983-1984 they ran their own club, thanks to support from the City Council arts centre, in a former electrical warehouse in Palmerston North. They named the club Snailclamps after a chalk inscription they found in the warehouse, "C164 Snail Clamps". Initially the venue ran as an underage hangout but became a fully licensed venue not long after, until the band decided to pack up and relocate to Wellington. [SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA]

The all-female japanese punk rock and deathrock band RAP formed in 1984 and disbanded in 1988. Members were Rouge (vocals, keyboards), Nishiki (guitar), Kaori (bass), Misa (drums, also member of bands such Final Bombs, Geizz, Kyah and of hardcore punk band from Tokyo Last Bomb) and Kinta (drums, also a member of goth / post-punk / new wave band Mannequin Neurose). They released three 7", 'Wrap' (1985), 'Trap' (1986) and 'Rapout' (1986) and a 12", 'Hysteria' (1986), all on Dogma Records. The set of tunes in 'Hysteria' veers into X-Mal Deutschland territory with its sung vocals, slow tempos, and thinned out guitar sound. [SOURCE: MAXIMUMROCKANDROLL]

PGR – Cyclone Par L'Immobile Habité [LP] (1988, Permis De Construire)

PGR started life as an industrial group in mid '80s under the Poison Gas Research moniker. Their studio was in a rough area in Oakland. To deter dubious people they affixed a sign with "Poison Gas Research" written on it at the front door. After self publishing several cassettes under this name, the group name was shortened to PGR. Kim Cascone was also ahead of the game on the whole ambient drone vibe, sometimes even with slight World music overtones. Don't let that scare you away though, as this is certainly far from room filler. With friends like Das (Big City Orchestra) and AMK (Anthony Michael King, American experimental musician who was active since the early 80s and created his own label Banned Production) on board, this early LP runs with all the above and more. Highlight would have to be the three part "Time" trilogy. In the haunting "Only Hell Burns Brighter' samples of Stravinsky's "Sacre du Printemps" are used. Very enjoyable. Oi Polloi – Destroi The System! [Cass] (1985, Not On Label)

Oi Polloi are a punk rock band from Scotland that formed around 1981. Starting as an Oi! band, they are now generally more associated with the anarcho-punk genre. The band has become notable for their contributions to the Scottish Gaelic punk subgenre. The name comes from the Greek expression "οἱ πολλοί", anglicized "hoi polloi", meaning "the masses" or "the common people".

The band has gone through about 50 members since their formation, and their only permanent member has been vocalist Deek Allen, who has also been involved in Gaelic-language television. The band has included punks and skinheads. The members have been supporters of Anti-Fascist Action and Earth First!, and they use the motto "No Compromise in Defence of Our Earth," which is an adaptation of Earth First!'s motto. They support direct action in defence of the environment, hunt sabotage, as well as resistance against racism, sexism, homophobia, fascism and imperialism. [SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA]

NNB – Slack / New World [7''] (1978, Wave Seven)

NNB, who formed in Minneapolis in the late '70s, created a fair amount of buzz at the time, being favourably compared to the likes of Television and Pere Ubu. By all accounts, guitarist/vocalist Mark Freeman was the guiding force behind the band, which released a string of singles but no long-player, together with bassist Rusty Jones, drummer Jim Tollefsrud and guitarist Dick Champ.

Champ himself recalled, in an interview: “NNB, like a bunch of other Minneapolitans, rolled the dice, hopped into our Ford Econoline van, and relocated to New York in the fall of 1980. About six months later, NNB played the Noise Fest at White Columns, the festival that by some accounts launched Sonic Youth. All of which goes to illustrate: There's a little bit (and sometimes even a lot) of Minneapolis in the history of rock music.” Like Sonic Youth, NNB's music was as challenging as it was addictive, combining a laudable quest for invention with the can-do attitude of garage-rock. The Moderates – Fetishes [12''] (1980, Open Eye Records)

The Moderates were a Liverpool band who had a large local following in the late 1970s and early 1980s and championed by John Peel on his BBC Radio 1 show (the band supported John Peel's Roadshow date at Liverpool University on 2 September 1978). The band's lineup consisted of John Brady (vocals, keyboards), Heidi Kure (vocals), Phil Allen (drums), Tom Gould (guitar), Bobby Carr (guitar, violin) and Mike Pursey (bass, later of Dead or Alive). The Moderates also recorded a John Peel session on 25 March 1981 at the BBC's Maida Vale Studios, produced by Dale Griffin (Mott the Hoople). The session was transmitted on 20 April that year.
