Kilgore Trout is an alternative rock band that was based in Nottingham and Sheffield in the north of England between 1985 and 1991. In that time Kilgore Trout released two EPs, contributed eight tracks to two compilation LPs, and appeared on a flexidisc that came free with the legendary fanzine Ablaze! This band's mainstay was Chris Trout, a seminal figure in the British alternative music scene, who has also worked with Bear, A.C. Temple, Spoonfed Hybrid, Lazerboy, Coping Saw and Smokers Die Younger. Trout wrote the songs and played most of the instruments in Kilgore Trout. Since emerging in the late '80s, composer, guitarist, producer, and all-around musical polymath Jim O'Rourke's wide-ranging output has found audiences with experimental jazz and noise fans, chill room denizens, indie rockers, and bedroom experimentalists, and bridged gaps between some otherwise isolated compositional communities. As a guitarist, he is recognized for his work with prepared guitar in improvisational settings, and also for playing with noise rock pioneers Sonic Youth, in Loose Fur with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and Glenn Kotche, and for David Grubbs' experimental rock group Gastr del Sol, just to name a few. He has also released over 30 solo albums, spanning singer / songwriter fare, adventurous post-rock, noise and tape experiments, ambient pieces, and pastoral instrumentals, with a knack for combining them into idiosyncratic art song. His 1989 solo debut, 'Some Kind of Pagan', experimented with prepared guitar and field recordings, while his 1997 Drag City label debut, 'Bad Timing', veered into more standard song forms. Some diverse highlights of his prolific career also include teaching the child actors the songs for Richard Linklater's film "School of Rock" (2003), winning a Grammy for producing Wilco's album 'A Ghost Is Born' (2004), and playing guitar and piano on Richard Thompson's score for the Werner Herzog documentary "Grizzly Man" (2005). Over 25 years into his recording career, he cracked the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart in 2015 with his solo LP 'Simple Songs'.
He first picked up the guitar at the age of six, but it wasn't until O'Rourke studied composition at DePaul University that his interest in the less-obvious possibilities of the instrument led him through the early catalogs of the post-classical and electro-acoustic traditions. While at DePaul, O'Rourke completed much of the work that would constitute his first few releases. He also had the opportunity to meet noted improvisational guitarist Derek Bailey, who invited O'Rourke to play at the British Improv Festival Company Week, leading to further collaborative projects with Bailey, Henry Kaiser, Eddie Prevost, and David Jackman. O'Rourke began working with Dan Burke's Illusion of Safety project in the early '90s, and released three albums through Staalplaat and Tesco before moving on to form experimental "rock" group Gastr del Sol with David Grubbs. In Excelsis was an English goth rock band formed in Luton in may 1983 by former UK Decay guitarist Steve Spon and disbanded in 1985. Other members were Errol Blythe (vocals, ex-Ritual), Mark Bond (bass) and Colin "Roxy" Rox (drums, ex-Shy Tots, later in New York City noise-rock band DUSTdevils and Jayne County & The Electric Chairs).
Hidious In Strength was an early project of John Zewizz (Sleep Chamber) started around 1982. The instrumentation was often a combination of synthesizer experimentation, tapes, and “found” vocals from TV. Bristol-based indie popsters The Groove Farm emerged as part of the C-86 movement, serving up shambling guitar with ‘60s undertones. The band formed in 1986, comprised of singer / guitarist Andrew Jarrett, guitarist Jon Kent, bassist Rupert Taylor, and drummer Jez Butler. Founding their own label, Raving Pop Blast!, The Groove Farm released a handful of 7"s and 12" EPs as well as the full-length 'Plug (The Story of Pop So Far)' between 1987 and 1990. Also signed with the Subway Organisation label, the quartet released the 'Alvin Is King!' LP along with a variety of vinyl releases, but creative differences and financial strains led them back on the D.I.Y. track. Gaining fans like Clare Wadd (who would later co-found Sarah Records) and radio personality John Peel, The Groove Farm were covered extensively in the British fanzine press, with their song "Baby Blue Marine" issued as a flexi-disc for Kvatch. Following the breakup of the band, Jarrett formed Beatnik Filmstars -joined in the early years of the band by Kent and Butler- while Taylor went on to perform with Girlboy Girl. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC]

F/i are from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and have been around since 1981, releasing a half-dozen LPs on RRRecords. The band started out as a unit elaborating on noise structures in the tradition of Throbbing Gristle or Nurse With Wound. They are also influenced by Hawkwind and Spacemen 3. In 1983 they changed their name from The Surfin' Führers to F/i. Richard Franecki later went on to form Vocokesh but still returns to F/i once in a while.
Boy Dirt Car were formed by Darren Brown and Eric Lunde in 1981 after the two young punkers met Glenn Branca at a Chicago noise-music festival. Starting1983 with a line up featuring Darren Brown, Julie Brown, Josh Mead and Dylan Ritchie, they proceeded to play with a revolving-door line-up that usually consisted of Brown and Lunde. Finally settling on a semi-stable line-up that consisted of the duo and Keith Brammer and Dan Kubinski of Die Kreuzen on various metal percussive instruments and noise-making devices, Boy Dirt Car found their feet and were soon mooted as America's answer to Einstürzende Neubauten. Inactive as a band for many years, Eric Lunde in the meantime released some solo records and Darren Brown formed Impact Test.
Ethyl Meatplow was a short-lived yet enormously accomplished pseudo-industrial alternative / dance-rock outfit comprised of vocalist Carla Bozulich, drummer Biff Barefoot Sanders, and singer / guitarist John Napier. Formed circa 1990, the group released three independent singles before their only album, 1993's 'Happy Days Sweetheart'. The group earned a reputation for their live shows, which combined samples and electronics with live instrumentation. 'Happy Days Sweetheart' earned good reviews in alternative / underground magazines, but the band spilt soon after its release. Bozulich became the vocalist for the pseudo-country-rock group The Geraldine Fibbers; she also sang on ex-Minutemen/ fIREHOSE bassist Mike Watt's 1995 solo debut, 'Ball-hog or Tugboat?'. Diskord Datkord was a hip hop house electronic collaboration between brothers Mark Tinley and Adam Tinley (who later became Adamski) and Johnny Melton (known as Johnny Slut). The brothers previously were in the Stupid Babies, when they were kids and Johnny Slut used to be in the goth group, The Specimen. Diskord Datkord only released one single, featuring the cover of X-Ray Spex's "Identity" in 1988, and split afterwards before Adamski and his brother went solo. The Claim were a British band from Cliffe, Kent, England. They formed around 1980, as part of the independent Medway scene around the nearby towns of Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham and influenced by classic acts such as The Kinks, The Jam, The Clash and The Smiths. Stylistically, they shared much in common with fellow Kent band The Dentists and early Creation Records acts such as The Jasmine Minks.
Between 1985 and 1992, The Claim released two albums and various singles and EPs, first on their own record label, and then via Kevin Pearce's Esurient Communications imprint, Bob Stanley's Caff label and the German-based label A Turntable Friend. Their first outing, 'Armstrong’s Revenge & Eleven Other Short Stories' was followed by the 12" EP 'This Pencil Was Obviously Sharpened By a Left-Handed Indian Knife Thrower' (again on Trick Bag Records).
