Fiat Lux - Blue Emotion [7''] (1984, Polydor)

The British new wave trio Fiat Lux notched a handful of hits in the U.K. before vanishing into the pop abyss. Fiat Lux formed in Yorkshire, England, in 1982 with Steve Wright (vocals), Ian Nelson (sax, keyboards), and Dave Crickmore (guitars, keyboards). Wright and Crickmore studied drama together in college. After graduating, Wright joined a theatre company called the Yorkshire Actors where he met musician Bill Nelson, the former guitarist of Be Bop Deluxe. Wright gave Nelson a demo tape he and Crickmore had recorded. Impressed with their music, Nelson produced and arranged one of the demo's tracks, "Feels Like Winter Again", and released it on his label Cocteau Records. In April 1982, Bill Nelson's brother Ian Nelson was added to Fiat Lux's lineup. They named themselves Fiat Lux, which is the Latin translation for the Biblical quotation "Let There Be Light". "Feels Like Winter Again" was the first of Fiat Lux's radio successes. In 1984, the haunting ballad "Secrets" drew comparisons to Depeche Mode's moody synth-pop; it became Fiat Lux's most well-known song. Fiat Lux's utilization of cello in "Secrets" broadened synth-pop's stylistic range. However, Fiat Lux never released a full-length album. The group's output was limited to several singles for Polydor. Fiat Lux disbanded in 1985. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC]

Das Damen ‎- Das Damen [12''] (1986)

Das Damen were one of the more metallic acts in the legendary SST stable, melding '60s psychedelia and heavy acid rock with the noisy, punk-derived alternative rock typical of the label. Instead of delving into screaming white noise along the lines of labelmates Dinosaur Jr., Das Damen preferred warm, trippy, high-volume distortion. Their early material was given over to improvisational jamming, but as they developed their songwriting, they threw in more complex rhythms and time signature shifts. Taking their name from the German term for "ladies," Das Damen were formed in New York in 1984 by vocalist/guitarist Jim Walters, guitarist Alex Totino, bassist Phil Leopold Von Trapp, and drummer Lyle Hysen. The group released its six-song, self-titled debut EP in 1986 on Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace label; it was quickly picked up by SST, which was also Sonic Youth's label at the time. Camara - El Frío En Mis Manos [7''] (1982)

Camara was one of the first bands that managed to bring some luster to the pop-rock from Málaga emerging at the height of the new Spanish wave. Formed in 1980 in Torremolinos, the foundation of the group was led initially by Ricardo Teixidó, drummer from Sociedad Anónima. The group decides to try their luck in Madrid, getting in 1982 a single with the independent label Tres Cipreses under the musical direction of Eduardo Benavente (Parálisis Permanente). The songs chosen for that work (one of the first productions of Eduardo Benavente) were "El Frio en mis Manos" and "Pecado Mortal", two examples of goth-rock that surprised by their effective melodies, fine guitars and the outstanding voice of his singer. Balaam And The Angel ‎- Day And Night [12''] (1985)

The gothic pop band Balaam & the Angel were formed in Birmingham, England in 1984 by the Scottish-born Morris brothers -vocalist / bassist Mark, drummer Des, and guitarist Jim. The siblings started their career while still children, playing men's clubs as a cabaret-styled act; as adults, they began as a more pop-oriented unit, but found themselves affiliated with the goth rock movement after a series of opening dates for The Cult. After founding their own label, Chapter 22 Records, Balaam & the Angel released their debut EP, 'Love Me', in 1985; the subsequent 'Day and Night' brought the group to the attention of Virgin, which issued the full-length 'The Greatest Story Ever Told' in 1987. A Primary Industry ‎- At Gunpoint / Perversion [7''] (1984)

A Primary Industry was an incredibly underrated UK band who walked a fine line between the avant ghetto of SPK, 23 Skidoo and A Certain Ratio and the ethereal textures of Cocteau Twins and Operating Theatre. While their lone LP 'Ultramarine' was released in 1986, there are quite a few tracks that point heavily towards the shoegaze genre that was barely a glimmer across a pedalboard at the time. The Zulus - The Zulus [LP] (1985, Greenworld Records)

Zulus vocalist Larry Bangor and guitarist Rich Gilbert were founding members of Human Sexual Response, a demented post-punk group that existed from the late '70s to the early '80s. The Zulus had a louder, more straightforward rock & roll sound than Human Sexual Response; their angst-laden, guitar-heavy tunes fit well on late-'80s college radio, helping to pave the way for grunge. The Zulus were signed to Slash and released their album 'Down on the Floor' in 1989. 'Down on the Floor' was produced by Bob Mould of Hüsker Dü, one of the Zulus' obvious influences. In 1992, the band broke up. Drummer Malcolm Travis joined Mould in Sugar while Gilbert and bassist Rich Cortese formed Concussion Ensemble. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC]
