Passionnel ‎– Our Promise [LP] (1985, Enigma)

A peripatetic figure on the Los Angeles post-punk scene, Alex Gibson first appeared around 1978 as the lead guitarist and songwriter of an unrecorded (at the time) local band called The Little Cripples. When that band's singer, Michael Gira, split for New York to form Circus Mort and, eventually, Swans, the remaining bandmembers regrouped with Gibson on lead vocals to form BPeople. Later in 1981, Gibson released his first solo recording, a four-song EP called 'Passionnel', on Faulty Products. This release found Gibson largely abandoning guitars in favor of synthesizers. Gibson's next project was the soundtrack to Penelope Spheeris' cult classic film "Suburbia", on which he explored a new interest in Killing Joke-style semi-industrial atmospherics. That style continued in his next effort, a band called Passionnel, which managed two releases before splintering: 1984's 'The Apostle' and 1985's 'Our Promise'. (Gibson also spent part of his time during this period as an adjunct member of the Los Angeles death rockers .45 Grave.) Gibson drew a veil over his recording career after the breakup of Passionnel, writing a few more obscure film scores before finding a lucrative day job as a music and sound editor on major Hollywood films. Original Mirrors ‎– Heartbeat: The Best Of Original Mirrors [CD] (1996, Mercury)

Original Mirrors are mainly remembered for one reason: future Lightning Seeds leader Ian Broudie was in the band. Original Mirrors formed in Liverpool, England, in 1980 after the collapse of vocalist Steve Allen's art rock group Deaf School in 1978. (Prior to the Original Mirrors, Broudie was a member of Big in Japan with Frankie Goes to Hollywood frontman Holly Johnson.) Including Broudie on guitar, the band also featured Peter Kircher (drums), Jonathan Perkins (keyboards), and Phil Spalding (bass). Recalling glam and power pop, Original Mirrors didn't even resemble Broudie's later '60s influenced work. The group's self-titled first album was released in 1980 with no commercial success; a similarly bleak fate met their next full-length, 'Heart Twango & Raw Beat', in 1981. The band then split up. Nick Nicely ‎– Hilly Fields (1892) [7''] (1982, EMI)

Best known for the 1982 cult hit "Hilly Fields (1892)", Nick Nicely's unique mix of psychedelic rock and electronic pop influenced contemporaries such as Robyn Hitchcock and XTC's Andy Partridge and informed the work of later talents like Bevis Frond, John Maus, Ariel Pink, and Temples. Despite his potential, Nicely disappeared during the mid-'80s and much of the '90s, resurfacing later that decade and gaining acclaim during the 2000s and 2010s thanks to reissues of his old work and the release of new music.

Nicely threw everything he had into his single, 'Hilly Fields (1892)', selling his home studio and his other possessions to finance the six-month recording process at Alvic Studio. The results were worth it: from its "Strawberry Fields"-like titular reference to a London park to its melancholy melody and mysterious washes of sound -which included tape manipulation that sounded like turntable scratching- it updated British psychedelia so brilliantly that NME called it "the best psychedelic record made since the '60s." Released by EMI, 'Hilly Fields' also failed to get much commercial traction, but it inspired Andy Partridge to form The Dukes of Stratosphear and predicted the psychedelic revival that The Three O'Clock, Robyn Hitchcock, and others expanded on later in the '80s. Mark has also composed the score for several feature films, recorded a number of library music CDs and achieved success as a songwriter most notably for Samantha Fox during the eighties. Mark has also worked with Chris Franke of Tangerine Dream and has had some technical association with world-class producer and modular synthesiser enthusiast/expert Ed Buller. Lavabos Iturriaga ‎– China [7''] (1982, Discos Suicidas)

Lavabos Iturriaga emerged in Bilbao in 1981, before the Radical Basque Rock era. It was formed by Ana Jiménez (voice and polyphonic synthesizer), Oscar Amezaga (guitar), Javi González "Koketo" (synthesized guitar), Paco Marcilla (bass) and Roge Blasco (synthesizer). Their live appeareances showed them in white makeup and strange uniforms halfway between The Residents and Kraftwerk. Hypnotic melodies, instrumental songs, Japanese settings, songs in invented languages ... They were among the few who recorded videos produced for the newborn Basque television. In 1982 they recorded in the Du-Manoir Studios (France), for Discos Suicidas, the single 'China/Guasimira/Nichos'. [SOURCE: THE COMMERCIAL ZONE]

Killdozer ‎– Burl [12''] (1986, Touch & Go)

It was dedicated to the memory of folksinger Burl Ives, but there was one small problem -he wasn't dead at the time. Regardless, 'Burl' itself is a fun slice of madness, with regular producer at the time Butch Vig once again helping to make the trio's vision a rather gruesomely funny reality via this six-song effort. The most unlikely of the band's covers closed things out, Jessi Colter's "I'm Not Lisa," as nuttily trudge-worthy as could be imagined in the band's hands. If there's a legendary number, though, then no doubt about it, "Hamburger Martyr" became the group's anthem or close to it. Starting with a spat "F*ck you!," Michael Gerald takes detailed time to criticize a greasy-spoon chef's lack of cooking ability ("I could make a better hamburger with my asshole!"), then witheringly corrects him in the ways of burger flipping. All this loud-as-hell sludge/stomp noise is mixed with kitchen chaos and random quotations from Voltaire as well; it's Killdozer in a nutshell. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC]

Jesse Garon & The Desperadoes ‎– A Cabinet Of Curiosities [LP] (1989, Velocity Records)

This Edinburgh-based act emerged in 1986. Initially viewed as an informal venture -its founding line-up was largely drawn from members of another group, Rote Kopelle- The Desperadoes nonetheless established themselves as the leading exponents of the city’s ‘shambling’ scene, alongside the more fêted Shop Assistants. Fran Schoppler (vocals) Andrew Tully (guitar/vocals), Angus McPake (bass) and Marquerita Vazquez Ponte (drums) provided the core of a unit that made its debut with the melodic ‘Splashing Along’, a single sympathetically produced by ex-Jesus And Mary Chain bass player Douglas Hart. The Desperadoes’ deft blend of charm and melancholia was captured on a series of excellent singles, including ‘The Rain Fell Down’ and ‘And If The Sky Should Fall’. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC]

The Higher Primates ‎– Taking In The Summer [7''] (1980, Tekno Tunes)

The Higher Primates was a "band" that existed, in studio only, in the early 1980's. All synths, guitars, bass, soprano, alto and tenor saxs, voices, engineering and everything else except the record cover design were the product of one Nicholas Wedd Brown, the cover was done by his sister, Penelope Brown. There were two live performance bands that featured Nick's music and were fronted by Nick. While the first was called The Higher Primates, the second incarnation was called simply The Primates. The first one, in Northampton Massachusetts, featured West Peddie on guitar and bass, Chris Houston on Fender Rhodes and synth, Roy Finch on synths, Jim Brown on drums and Nick on lead vocals, synth and guitar. They played exactly one gig, warming up for Tom Verlaine. Everyone but Brown contributed to the writing, including quite a number of other songs. The second was formed in 1983 in Washington D.C. and consisted of Carl Peachey on guitar, Marc Muscato on drums and Billy Swann on bass. Nick did his usual stuff. This incarnation did some recording but none has been released so far. [SOURCE: LAST.FM]
