Various ‎– Street To Street - A Liverpool Album [LP] (1979, Open Eye Records)

Open Eye Records was a label founded by Mike Knowler aka Noddy Knowler, a Liverpool DJ starting at the age of 17 in 1969 mainly playing soul music, being an early exponent of house music in the UK. Between 1978 and 1985 also made his name as a recording engineer and record producer working with Pete Burns (Dead or Alive), Echo and the Bunnymen and OMD

Big in Japan was a punk band that emerged from Liverpool, England in the late 1970s. They are better known for the later successes of their band members than for their own music. According to the Liverpool Echo, Big in Japan were "a supergroup with a difference -its members only became super after they left". The ID was one of the bands Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys played with before becoming OMD.

Modern Eon formed in Liverpool, in 1981, they released an album and four singles before disbanding. Their biggest hit is "Euthenics". After their demise founder of the band Alix Plain was renamed Che for a 1983 album, Cliff Hewitt joined Virgin Dance and then collaborated with Apollo 440, Joe McKechnie joined The Passage and then Benny Profane and Tim Lever joined Dead Or Alive and then formed One World Productions along with Mike Percy

Tontrix formed in 1978 featuring Hambi Haralambous on vocals (later Victims of Romance, Hambi and The Dance), Steve Lovell on guitar (later of Hollycaust, Hambi and The Dance, Blitz Brotherss, Julian Cope), Mike Score on bass (later A Flock of Seagulls), Bobby Carr on keyboards (ex Those Naughty Lumps, later Moderates, Surreal Estate), Chris Hughes on drums (later of Hambi and The Dance, Adam and The Ants), who replaced Ian Johnston. The band had only one official release in 1979, the 7" single called 'Shellshocked'

The Accelerators was a punk band active around 1977-1981, that only relesed one EP; The Moderates edited three EPs between 1980 and 1981, and Echo & The Bunnymen were formed in Liverpool in 1978, the original lineup was Ian McCulloch (vocals), Will Sergeant (guitar), Les Pattinson (bass) and soon replacing a drum machine Pete De Freitas (drums). The Wild Flowers ‎– The Joy Of It All [LP] (1984, Reflex Records)

Like Del Amitri, Wolverhampton’s The Wild Flowers became tired of a disinterested UK pop scene and looked to America for inspiration and appreciation. After two singles, ‘Melt Like Ice’ and ‘Things Have Changed’, and an album, 'The Joy Of It All', on Reflex in 1984, the fledgling outfit were dealt a blow when original guitarist Dave Newton left to form The Mighty Lemon Drops. This is a very underrated early 80s neo-psychedelic post-punk guitar pop in the same vein as Echo & The Bunnymen, Icicle Works, and The Teardrop Explodes. Worth seeking out if you like this sound. The Verlaines ‎– 10 O'Clock In The Afternoon [12''] (1984, Flying Nun)

This mini-album made legend in the '80s to followers of the sophisticated pop movement coming from the small country of New Zealand during that decade. The Flying Nun label was the epicenter for this scene, and The Verlaines were arguably the most eloquent animators of this jangle pop sensibility. While they produced very fine albums for the label, such as the 1987 masterpiece 'Bird Dog' and its sister album 'Halelujah All the Way Home', this EP is considered by many to be their defining document. It's post-punk Baroque pop; what appears to be a simple formulaic indie sound in retrospect, one must consider that in the era 1983 to 1986, this would have sounded fresh if not revolutionary. All time considered, 'Ten O'clock in the Afternoon' still sounds as vibrant as the day it was recorded. While main man Graham Dowenes' songwriting became more complex on subsequent recordings, the simplicity of "Death and the Maiden" is the song that put them on the map. As their fans Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, and Pavement have all attested to, The Verlaines were not simply onto something new, they wrote the book for the ensuing two decades of guitar pop. Units ‎– New Way To Move [EP] (1983, Epic)

In 1982, peppy single 'The Right Man' (released by the small independent label Up Roar Records) scaled the dance charts and helped earn the band a contract with Epic Records. While the soundtrack-ready single 'A Girl Like You' found its way into medium rotation on the nascent MTV, its parent mini-album, 'New Way to Move', was not commercially successful. Bill Nelson worked with the Units, producing what were to be their second and third records for Epic, but neither saw the light of the day. In 1984, Scott Ryser and Rachel Webber moved on, relocating to New York, and the band dissolved. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC

Terje Rypdal ‎– Whenever I Seem To Be Far Away [LP] (ECM Records, 1974)

'Whenever I Seem to be Far Away' is an early Terje Rypdal album on ECM Records. While the two songs that make up Side 1 of the LP are good examples of early Terje Rypdal, the symphonic track that takes up all of Side 2 and slows down the momentum generated by the electric Side 1. For fans of early Terje Rypdal this album is still worth having. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC

Terje Rypdal ‎– What Comes After [LP] (ECM Records, 1974)

'What Comes After' is one of the best early ECM albums. Barre Phillips uses acoustic basses along with Sveinung Hovensjø on electric bass. ECM stalwart Jon Christensen (drums) plays on this album and for that matter, on most early 70s ECM albums. Guest Bassist Barre Phillips wrote two of the songs with the rest being Terje Rypdal compositions. Side 1 is excellent and the title song which kicks off side 2 is another stand out. Side 2 closes with the two Barre Phillips compositions.

Like most of Terje Rypdal's early ECM albums, this album is also rather dark and gloomy sounding. If you like the early Terje Rypdal albums and haven't heard this one then you will not be disappointed. In fact, 'What Comes After' is one of the best albums that Terje Rypdal ever made, don't miss it! [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC

Terje Rypdal ‎– Terje Rypdal [LP] (1971, ECM)

Norwegian guitarist Terje Rypdal has an instantly recognizable, difficult to peg style, both an as ensemble player and as a soloist. He has directly or indirectly influenced virtually every one of his countrymen who followed him on the instrument. He is also a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist and, perhaps most importantly, a world-class composer. He has written six symphonies, numerous chamber works, and sonatas. He made his debut as a composer with Eternal Circulation in 1971, which was performed with by the Garbarek Quartet and the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC

Scapaflow ‎– Endless Sleep [7''] (1980)

Scapa Flow were a tight 3 piece, originally influenced by The Jam, who mutated quickly into a furious (in more ways than one) post-punk-prog-metal outfit. Intricate bass and guitar lines, hooked together by terrific drumming, were played with intensity and volume and overlayed with surprising two part harmonies. If sometimes, possibly, too tricky for their own good, at least they were an antidote to the three chord thrash. They released 2 singles ('Endless Sleep' and 'At Home and Abroad'). Ram Narayan, Mahapurush Misra, Shirish Gor ‎– Sarangi / The Voice Of A Hundred Colors [LP] (1969, Nonesuch)

Narayan is associated with the Kirana gharana (stylistic school of Kirana) through Abdul Wahid Khan, but his performance style is not strongly connected to it. Most of Narayan's compositions are from the singing repertoire of his teachers and were modified and adapted to the sarangi. He has created original compositions and in performance varies those he was taught. Narayan disfavors the creation of new ragas, but developed compound ragas, including those of Nand with Kedar and Kafi with Malhar.

Narayan uses a sarangi obtained from Uday Lal and built in Meerut in the 1920s or 1930s in his concerts and recordings. He plays on foreign harp strings to produce a clearer tone. Narayan experimented with modifications to his instrument and added a fourth string, but removed it because it hindered playing. In the 1940s, he exchanged gut with steel for the first string and found it easier to play, but reverted to using only gut strings because the steel string altered the sound. [SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA

Ram Narayan, Suresh Talwalkar ‎– Master Of The Sārangī (Classical Music Of India) [LP] (1975, Nonesuch)

Narayan's style is characteristic of Hindustani classical music, but his choice of solo instrument and his background of learning from teachers outside his community are not common for the genre. He has stated that he aims to please the audience and create a feeling of harmony, and expects the audience to reciprocate by reacting to his playing.

Narayan's performances are strung together from the meditative and measured alap (non-metrical introduction) and jor (performance with pulse) in dhrupad style, followed by a faster and less reserved gat section (composition with rhythmic pattern provided by the tabla) in khyal style. He experimented with a style of jhala (performance with rapid pulse) developed by Bundu Khan, but considered it more appropriate for plucked instruments and stopped performing it. The gat section includes one or two parts with compositions. When two gats are used, the first one tends to be at a slow or medium tempo, and the second one is faster; the gats are usually performed in the 16-beat rhythmic cycle tintal. Narayan often completes performances with ragas associated with thumri (a popular light classical genre), which are referred to as mishra (Sanskrit: mixed) because they allow for additional notes, or with a dhun (song based on folk music).

Narayan practices and teaches using a limited number of paltas, exercises in a small scale range that are used to prepare playing different numbers of notes per bow. Derived from paltas are lengthy note patterns called tans, which contain characteristic "melodic shapes" and are used by Narayan for fast playing. He uses his left (fingering) hand for runs and to play an extended melodic range, and his right (bowing) hand for rhythmic accentuations. Narayan's fingering technique, his low right hand position, keeping the bow in a close to right angle to the string, and his use of the full bow length are unusual among sarangi players. Ram Narain ‎– Pandit Ram Narain - Sarangi [LP] (1968, His Master's Voice)

Ram Narayan (born 25 December 1927), often referred to with the title Pandit, is an Indian musician who popularised the bowed instrument sarangi as a solo concert instrument in Hindustani classical music and became the first internationally successful sarangi player.

Narayan became a concert solo artist in 1956 and has since performed at the major music festivals of India. After sitar player Ravi Shankar successfully performed in Western countries, Narayan followed his example. He recorded solo albums and made his first international tour in 1964 to America and Europe with his older brother Chatur Lal, a tabla player who had toured with Shankar in the 1950s. Narayan taught Indian and foreign students and performed, frequently outside India, into the 2000s. He was awarded India's second highest civilian honour, the Padma Vibhushan, in 2005. Various ‎– South Specific [LP] (1980, Brain Boosters Records)

Brain Boosters Records was an English independent label based in Hampshire. On early releases is called Brain Booster Music and then Brain Booster Records and became titled Brain Boosters Records later. Also titled Brain Booster and Brain Boosters -all are the same label. They released singles for bands like The Frames or Attic and in this compilation appears some songs by Renaldo & The Loaf, the best known artists of the whole lot. Renaldo Malpractice (Brian Poole) and Ted the Loaf (David Janssen) are a bizarre, insanely creative duo of Brits hailing from Portsmouth. Their music is wacky and fun, schizophrenic and unexpected. "Discovered" by The Residents after they released a cassette version of their first recording, they were signed to Ralph Records and produced 3 albums between 1981 and 1987. [SOURCE: DISCOGS

The Particles – I Luv Trumpet [7''] (1984, Waterfront Records)

The Particles released 'I Luv Trumpet' in 1984. By this stage, they had experimented extensively with drum machines, tape machines, brass instruments and keyboard sounds. They always maintained an element of '80s Bubblegum' throughout their evolution. The band also toured extensively to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra and many regional centres. By the time the band stopped working in 1985, they had played in front countless people, travelled countless miles and left behind a legion of fans. [SOURCE: DISCOGS

The Particles – Colour In [7''] (1980)

Despite the obvious low budget nature of the recording, it was quickly included on radio stations playlists including Melbourne's 3RRR-fm as a pop classic. In fact, the band quickly gained a healthy following in Melbourne. Back home in Sydney, the band's following grew slowly but surely thanks to a weekly residency at the Sussex Hotel in the city where the band played 3 sets every Wednesday night. [SOURCE: DISCOGS
