Of A Mesh – Of A Mesh (Demo 1985) [Cass] (1985, Not On Label)

New York City's most famous dark rock band of the 1980s, Of a Mesh featured the dramatic crooning of singer Alan Dollgener duetting with Samara Lubelski's haunting violin atop a claustrophobic cobweb of sound. Formed in 1983 and disbanded in 1988, other members were Ellen Watkins (guitar, and played keyboard on one Glenn Branca piece), Gregory Kostroff (bass), Osamu (drums) and Michael Goglia (drums, member also of bands such as Ritual Tension and The Fuzztones).

Samara Lubelski is a singer, songwriter, multi instrumentalist (violinist, guitarist and bassist) improviser and engineer. She has been a member of numerous bands, besides of Of a Mesh, of The Salmon Skin, Pacer, The Sonora Pine, Hall of Fame, The Tower Recordings, Metal Mountains and Chelsea Light Moving. Lubelski is a prolific guest musician, performing (predominantly on violin and occasionally on bass) on dozens of recordings by artists such as The Fiery Furnaces, White Magic, Thurston Moore, God Is My Co-Pilot, Jackie-O Motherfucker, Sightings and MV & EE

The Nose Flutes – Girth [12''] (1985, Reflex Records)

The Noseflutes were an unorthodox, late-eighties band based in Birmingham. They released three EPs and three albums, recorded four sessions for Radio 1's John Peel, and received generally favourable reviews from the contemporary music press. During their existence they became "the house band for Birmingham". The band was formed in 1980 and both the band and the members went through several names before settling on The Noseflutes (previous names include The Blaggards, The Cream Dervishes, Extroverts in a Vacuum, The Viable Sloths, Pantaloni Brothers, and Shitstormer). The band's first releases were on Reflex Records, home to The Very Things and And Also the Trees. Reflex issued the band's first EP, 'Girth', in 1985. The band were described by the Birmingham Mail as a "wonderfully perverse avant weird outfit". [SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA]

Monomen – Come In Handies / S.O.B.S. [7"] (1980, De 1000 Idioten Records)

Before foming the duo Van Kaye + Ignit, Ed Van Kasteren (aka Van Kaye) was the singer of The Monomen, a local Arnhem new wave band, together with Bill Wisselink. They released a cassete, 'Hysteria', in 1982 and the 7" 'Come In Handies / S.O.B.S.' in 1980 on De 1000 Idioten Records, a Dutch label originating from Enschede, founded in 1977. The name was derived from their marketing strategy: There would be at least a thousand idiots who would buy their products. They eventually turned into Idiot Records.

Lassigue Bendthaus – The Engineers Love [Cass] (1988, NG Medien)

One of Uwe Schmidt's many pseudonyms, Lassigue Bendthaus is the prolific and experimental artist's electro-industrial project. Parade Amoureuse released the first "proper" Lassigue Bendthaus release, 'Matter' (later released in America by Metropolis). Next, Schmidt moved his Lassigue Bendthaus project to the Contempo label, resulting in the release of 'Cloned' (1992), an album exploiting the concept of sampling. 'Cloned: Binary' accompanied the album, this collection being a disassembled version of 'Cloned' consisting of a ridiculous number of samples that Schmidt wanted his listeners to rework. The next Lassigue Bendthaus releases, 'Render' and 'Render Audible', came in 1994 on the KK label. By this time, Schmidt's Atom Heart project had become exceptionally successful, demanding much of his attention and effort. The final album, 'Pop Artificielle', is in the glitch/techno music style of Schmidt's Atom™ project and is an album of pop and soul covers. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC]

Kosmonautentraum – Liebesmühn [7''] (1982, Zickzack)

Kosmonautentraum is a music project founded in 1980 by the singer Ziggy XY (aka Michael Jarick) and drummer E.K.T. (then both at Der Moderne Man) in Hannover with a strong closeness to the genial dilletants from Berlin (Die Tödliche Doris, Einstürzende Neubauten, Sprung Aus Den Wolken, etc.). Kosmonautentraum published mostly on cassettes and on the ZickZack label, with changing accompanying musicians until the mid-1980s. Ziggy XY also published a volume of poetry titled "Der Deutsche" and published together with E.K.T. the fanzine "Heute", which contained mostly collages and fictitious concert reviews and record reviews. Jonny Sevin – Jonny Sevin [LP] (1982, Art Attack)

This Power Pop album is from Tucson, Arizona band Jonny Sevin. Described as punky / New Wave during their run, members went on to be in many bands, most notably Yard Trauma and Jacket Weather. Produced by Bill Cashman and released on Art Attack Records, this one's got a processed, "edgy," '82-sounding production job (think 'Everywhere at Once'-era Plimsouls without the distinctive songwriting). Nevertheless, the two tracks that bookend the album, "You Want To" and "Sarah Bellum," are marginal keepers. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC]

Intaferon – Baby Pain [12''] (1984, Chrysalis)

Intaferon was a short-lived English New Wave duo, consisting of Simon Fellowes and Simon Gillham. They were signed to Chrysalis Records. Their song "GetOutOfLondon" (produced by Martin Rushent) was featured in the 2001 Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen movie "Winning London". Their singles were often featured on the Channel Four show "Max Headroom".

"Baby Pain" is a Simon Gillham song. The cover pictures Edie Sedgwick after the Chelsea Hotel fire. They originally wanted the cover to be all black with dark purple lettering -a big bruise. Produced by David Motion, the song signalled the end of Intaferon, the lyric at the beginning of the 12” remix uncannily preempting it. [SOURCE: SIMON FELLOWES]

The Hitmakers – It's Only Sad [7''] (1978, Mirror Records)

With a sound falling somewhere between punk, pop, and new wave, The Hitmakers were one of the earliest San Diego punk bands, circa late 1970s, along with The Zeros, The Dils, and The Penetrators. The classic lineup featured Joel Kmak (Penetrators, Powerthud), Steve Potterf (Crawdaddys), Ron Silva (Crawdaddys, Nashville Ramblers), Joseph Marc, and Jeff Scott, with Penetrators bassist Steve Kelly and Silva's drummer brother Scuzz also doing stints with the group. The band released a seven-inch three-song EP in 1978 called 'It's Only Sad', followed two years later with a single, 'Keep On Proving It b/w Tell Her I Love Her' (Surrey Sound Records).
