Lavabos Iturriaga – Imágenes Del Ruido [12''] (1984, Discos Suicidas)

This Bilbao band emerged in 1981, before the Radical Basque Rock era. It was formed by Ana Jiménez (voice and polyphonic synthesizer), Oscar Amezaga (guitar), Javi González "Koketo" (synthesized guitar), Paco Marcilla (bass) and Roge Blasco (synthesizer). Their live appeareances showed them in white makeup and strange uniforms halfway between The Residents and Kraftwerk. Hypnotic melodies, instrumental songs, Japanese settings, songs in invented languages, collaborations with the singer of Itoiz... They were among the few who recorded videos produced for the newborn Basque television. In 1982 they recorded in the Du-Manoir Studios (France), for Discos Suicidas, the single 'China'. The following year, they were included in the LP compilation 'Sintonía Independiente', together with groups like In Extremis, Los Santos and Rufus. Having spent two years since the recording of their first single, in 1984 they recorded the EP 'Imágenes del Ruido' for Discos Suicidas, but this time without Ana. The band at that time was formed by "Koketo" (voice, guitar and drum machine), Paco Marcilla (bass), Roge Blasco (monophonic synthesizer), Oscar Amezaga (polyphonic synthesizer) and Juan Carlos Pérez collaborating on vocals. Khmer Rouge – Year Zero Disco: Sister, Brother, Watch Them Suffer [Cass] (1982, Dead Hedgehog Enterprises)

Khmer Rouge was a UK Dance-Punk unit formed by Sally Andrews (vocals, keyboards, ex-Twelve Cubic Feet), Tim Reynolds (bass, vocals) and Anita Fothergill (drums, percussion). 'Year Zero Disco: Sister, Brother, Watch Them Suffer' is punky and low-fi by the standards of your regular disco artist, but it rewards repeat listening, and begins to sound like something in the general direction of Public Image Limited, LCD Soundsystem, Shriekback and those guys, once you're accustomed to it. Jabir – Vuelo Por Las Alturas De Xauen [Cass] (1988, EGK)

Both a polymath and erudite musician, Jabir (real name, Francisco Javier Sánchez González) decided to pay homage to the marriage of spirituality and science inspired by the legacy of Al-Andalus, the muslim Spanish civilisation. For that aim, he relied on a vast array of acoustic instruments (ney, violin, ud, bendir and daf), as well as on digital synthesizers and a complex system of computers able to generate aleatory melodies in Middle Eastern scales. He released two albums, the cassette 'Vuelo por las Alturas de Xauen' (1989, EKG) -old, crude-sounding synths and flute, violins or drums over looped synth melodies, over background noise; a beautiful, calming source of forgotten mysticism-, and the LP 'Vuelo por las Alturas de Alhambra', originally published in 1988 on Discos Esplendor Geométrico and a hidden gem in the catalogue of this influential Spanish label. The album unfolds a series of subtle and mesmerising compositions, and it's a recommended listening for those into the most narcotic side of Muslimgauze, the Dariush Dolat-Shahi's lps on Folkways, Jon Hassell's "Fourth World" explorations or even the recent work of contemporary Iranian experimentalists like Sote and Saba Alizadeh. Ivory Library – 1st EP [12''] (1985, Dairyland Records, B-Side Records, Inc.)

Ivory Library formed in 1984 in Madison, WI, and disbanded in 1997. Members were Jeff Jagielo (guitar, vocals), Dave Batson (guitar, vocals, 1984-95), Mike Beery (drums, vocals, 1984-87), Ted Xistris (bass, vocals, 1984-88), Jim Lueptow (keyboards, vocals, 1987-93), Tim Stevens (drums, vocals, 1987-89), Derrick McBride (bass, vocals, 1988-97), Laura Brown (pan flute, guitar, vocals, 1988-89), Peter Bruhn (drums, vocals, 1989-96), Pat Connaughty (guitar, vocals, 1995-97) and Tim Schmitt (drums, vocals, 1996-97).

In the early 2000s, Jagielo formed psych-rock band Squarewave which has issued five albums; Derrick McBride, originally from Chicago, Illinois, moved to Madison in 1984, where he joined the band The White Sisters, then joined Ivory Library in 1987.

This 12'' is a haunting and essential psych-jangle / dream-pop by a creative and criminally-overlooked band, produced by a pre-grunge Butch Vig, who had far more luck and success than this band.

The Hollow Men – The Man Who Would Be King [LP] (1988, Dead Man's Curve)

The Hollow Men were a British indie band from Leeds, England. The group named itself after the poem by T. S. Eliot. The members were David Ashmoore on vocals, Choque on guitar, Howard Taylor on bass, Brian E Roberts on guitar and Jonny Cragg on drums. Between 1985 and 1994 The Hollow Men released four albums and several singles.

Starting out as a two piece for the first single "Late Flowering Lust" (featuring session bassist John Dean) David Ashmoore (David Owen) and Choque (who was previously in Leeds band Salvation) were joined by permanent bassist Howard Taylor for debut album 'Tales of the Riverbank'. The trio recorded another album, 'The Man Who Would Be King', before drummer Jonny Cragg, who had guested on the album and guitarist Brian E. Roberts, a former bandmate of Taylor's when they were in The Passmore Sisters together, joined.

They signed to Arista Records in 1988 and released their debut single, "White Train", which was a remixed version of the song that originally appeared on 'The Man Who Would Be King' album. In December 1989, the British music magazine, NME reported that The Hollow Men, along with others such as Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine and The Charlatans, were their pick as 'stars of tomorrow'. The only album the band recorded for Arista was 'Cresta' released in 1990. The band split up in 1991. The album 'Twisted', made up from unreleased, demo and live tracks was released in the US only on November Records in 1994. [SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA]

Geizz – We Wait For Song Of Geizz [7''] (1985, DGR, Records.)

Geizz were one release wonder; their only 7″ 'We Wait For Song Of Geizz' came out in 1985. They may not have released very much, but as a band they had with quite the pedigree: members were active in The Execute and The Mobs among others. The guys here push out sonically quite a few good songs of speedy UK-influenced hardcore punk. Aside for the opening that has some Gastunk like pseudo-singing, the second track might have been a Clay unrelased song. "Wild Boys" it's a fast Discharge-like meets Mötorhead halfway and the pelvic thrust that reminds of a great UK band, The Fiend. "Tormentor" has more than a hint to GISM in the guitar department. Good, clean, violent fun. [SOURCE: 狂気の日本

Fats Comet – Rockchester [12''] (1987, World Records)

Fats Comet was a British/American industrial hip hop group formed by Adrian Sherwood, Keith LeBlanc, Skip McDonald and Doug Wimbish. British music producer Adrian Sherwood first met American percussionist Keith LeBlanc in 1984 while working on a remix for the reggae group Akabu. They were joined by guitarist Skip McDonald and bassist Doug Wimbish in London. Fats Comet was originally conceived to be a studio-only project. A change in musical direction led the members to focus their attention on another project called Tackhead, which aimed at having a less commercial sound compared to Fats Comet. Although they never released a full-length album, the group's final single, 'Rockchester', was a modest success in the UK. [SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA
