Mekanik Kommando ‎– Bay The Moon [LP] (1984, Wereld Rekord)

Mekanik Kommando is a new wave band from Nijmegen, the Netherlands, founded in 1980 and originated from the band Zelek of Peter van Vliet and Lasika Panyigay. It's a mix between 80s electro, cold wave and experimental electronic music. The band consisted of Jack Kaat, Laszlo Panyigay, Peter van Vliet, Simon van Vliet and Mirjam van Hout. After their sixth album from 1988 entitled 'The Castle Of Fair Welcome' the band continued under the name The Use of Ashes because the name Mekanik Kommando no longer covered the musical direction of the band. Leningrad Sandwich ‎– Heat [LP] (1982, Good Noise)

Leningrad Sandwich started around 1980 as a punk band of British ex-pats in Germany releasing the 'Go East' LP on Up Records. A quick lineup change added Annie Lloyd on vocals in time for the 'Heat' LP in 1982 on Good Noise Records. The music showed a departure from the band's original punk sound in favor of a darker new wave style that would follow through the subsequent releases, 'Steps' (1983) and 'Priests And Petrol' (1985), both also on Good Noise. Kosmonautentraum ‎– Juri Gagarin [LP] (1982, Zickzack Platten)

Kosmonautentraum published mostly on cassettes and on the ZickZack label, with changing accompanying musicians until the mid-1980s. "Kosmonaut" is one of the most powerful opening tracks ever: You have the mercilessly pummeling drums and the sneering vocals, but what other bands would have killed for is that deranged, tortured synth lead. The track gets a great piano-led reprise with "Juri Gagarin" (two reprises if you count the five-second "Epilog"). The rest of the album simply can't live up to the opener, it's fairly good NDW/post punk with mad, harrowing ("Hoffnung", "Deutsche Nacht"), but also surprisingly lackadaisical, sloppy ("Gierig", "Neugier") moments. Inhibidos Quizás? formed in mid-1983 in Valencia, under the musical influences of artists such as U2, R.E.M., Orange Juice, Magazine, The Cult or Bob Dylan. Inhibidos Quizás? practised a soft pop-rock, and their first formation was composed by Federico Segarra (guitars), Fran García (rhythm guitar and harmonica), Vicente González (vocals), Javi Soler (bass) and Gonzalo Mantarás (drums). The Honeymoon Killers – The Honeymoon Killers From Mars [LP] (1984, Fur Records)

Calling The Honeymoon Killers' debut disc a bad album is about as informative as calling 'Catch a Fire' a reggae record: it's just a generic description. This New York four-piece (not to be confused with the Belgian band named after the same 1970 psychotronic cinema classic) is firmly rooted in the aesthetics of the splatter drive-in, where badness is just the starting point. The fake voodoo music, recorded in "four track horror fidelity," is abrasive and primitive —like The Cramps with less-commercial instincts and an even sicker sense of humor. More a curio than anything anyone would ever want to listen to, 'Honeymoon Killers From Mars' is at least an entertaining curio. Think of it as aural pain in the service of black humor. Or think of it as obnoxious incompetence —you'll be neither alone nor unjustified. But miss it, and you'll never get to hear the world's worst version of Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love." Gibson Bros ‎– Big Pine Boogie [LP] (1987, OKra]

Originally released on their own Okra label and now made easier to find from Homestead, The Gibson Bros.' debut howl is a winner. The Bros. (actually there are no brothers in this band) cough up a spooky mix of super reverb/tremelo'ed blues raunch that clatters and clangs all over the damn place. With vocals (primarily from Jeff Evans) that warble regardless of key and pitch, backed by a band that only rarely seems cognizant of staying in tune or keeping the same beat, this is truly primitive stuff, but at times exhilarating. The accent is on the blues, but this is punk-blues, post-modern 12-bar, deconstructed Bukka White, clearly not an Alligator release. By no means an easy record, the work you put into the Gibsons will pay off handsomely. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC

Flash Strato ‎– Cristales Molidos [7''] (1982, Carnaby)

Vigorous pop, rapturous melodies and a convincing live performance. These were the main attractions of Flash Strato, a power-pop quartet from Madrid that, despite its obvious virtues, was not able to achieve success in the full eclosion of the Madrid movement. Its best-known line-up included Enrique Bastante (guitar and vocals), Emilio Huertas (guitar and vocals), Víctor Martín (bass) and Toti Árboles (drums), coming from bands such as Prisma or Plástico

Flash Strato's good instrumental technique, his vocal mastery and a certain facility to compose accurate pop pills with catchy choruses soon brought the attention of the record companies. However, their first vinyl delayed its release for too long, being issued when the group was already in a state of exhaustion due to changes in the formation.

Thus, in 1982, the Carnaby label (a subsidiary of Columbia) released a first single as a prologue of a future album that never saw the light. The quality of songs like "Cristales Molidos" is not inferior at all to that of other classics, already consecrated, of the Madrid pop of the first 80. However, the presence of Flash Strato is conspicuous by their absence in the various musical compilations dedicated to those years. [SOURCE: GRUPOS NACIONALES NUEVA OLA 80

Nottingham’s finest sons of Postpunk-Goffic Rock were amongst the most unique and active bands of the Mothercountry since their foundation in 1986. Carwashtagnacht ‎– Constant Balance [CD] (1999, Trottel Records)

Carwashtagnacht was a Hungarian industrial metal band from the small city of Békéscaba in the south-east of Hungary formed by Kiss Balázs (guitar), Knyihár Pál (bass guitar) and Sörös Gergö (vocals and programming). They played a Godflesh inspired style in which long-lasting repetitive metal riffs were combined with drum machine patterns with in this case gloomy distorted vocals in Hungarian and English. A band like Godflesh has had a lot of influence in Eastern Europe after the change of the political system in the 90's. Because of the lack of musical extremes in dominant music culture in socialist countries like Hungary before the 90's, many people were inspired by metal and punk bands.

In the late 90's Carwashtagnacht published a CD on the legendary Trottel Records in Hungary that together with the label Bahia was responsible for the output of alternative and experimental bands in Hungary. The label revolved around the alter-rock band Trottel that started out in the early 80's as a punk band and later evolved into an ethno-experimental-space-band. [SOURCE: ARCHAIC INVENTIONS

Benny Profane ‎– Parasite [12''] (1988, Ediesta Records)

Formed in the late 80s in Liverpool, England, Benny Profane featured Dave Jackson (vocals), Joseph McKechnie (guitar, drums), Robin Surtees (guitar) and Becky Stringer (bass). The permanent drummer had been Frank Sparks (ex-Ex Post Facto) but when he left, both Roger Sinek and Dave Brown helped out on the band’s debut album. Jackson, Stringer and Peter Baker, who filled in as an additional member providing organ, had all previously played in The Room. In many ways they were effectively an update of that commercially overlooked group. The new member McKechnie was rescued from the layout desk of the Merseyside health magazine "Who Cares?". They took their name from a character in Thomas Pynchon’s book "V", and their first single, ‘Where Is Pig’, came from his dialogue in the novel. A succession of low-key gigs at Monroes pub in Liverpool gave them a high local profile. However, they never repeated the success of the other local group who made the venue their home, The La’s, despite two strong albums and three fondly remembered sessions for the BBC disc jockey John Peel. The Accelerators – The Accelerators E.P. [12''] (1979, Spiv Records)

There were numerous punk bands called The Accelerators, but these Scousers were closer to power pop than anything else. They grew out of something called The Biggie Blues Band and through relentless local gigging became so popular that the Siouxsie & The Banshees supported them on their first Northern sojourn. Vinylwise, they first surfaced on the local compilation 'Street To Street - A Liverpool Album', alongside Modern Eon and Big In Japan, although of the bands on that record it was only Echo & the Bunnymen who went to achieve any substantial fame. Звуки Му ‎– Грубый Закат [CD] (1995, Moroz Records, Отделение Мамонов)

Led by singer, songwriter, poet, actor, and all-around artistic troublemaker Pyotr Manonov, Zvuki Mu was one of the few bands of the so-called "Russian Revolution" in late-'80s pop music that merited more than a casual glance from Western audiences. (As opposed to bands like the remarkably dull hard rockers Gorky Park). Formed in 1981 by Manonov, who was already a published author in his early 30s, Zvuki Mu (literally "sounds of moo", an absurdist name that suits Manonov's playful lyrical style) performed increasingly above-ground gigs in Russia and Eastern Europe throughout the '80s. By 1989, as Mikhail Gorbachev's glasnost policies were taking effect and the Iron Curtain was starting to crumble, Zvuki Mu began to make a name for themselves in the West, to the point that Brian Eno signed the group to his own Opal label and produced their first album, 1989's 'Zvuki Mu'.

The group's unique blend of jazz, rock, Zappa-like weirdness, and subtle political content was quite popular among the more adventurous fringes of the Western pop scene, but a greater breakthrough never came. After the U.S.S.R.'s collapse, Russian rock & roll lost most of its exotic qualities and Western attention wandered elsewhere. Another Opal album, 'Zima' (Winter), followed in 1991, but all Zvuki Mu albums after that were released only in Eastern Europe, where the band maintain a rather large fan base. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC

Beginning life as an experimental electronic outfit, Sydney band Ya Ya Choral became a much-admired, if commercially unsuccessful, hard rock outfit over the course of a decade.

Ya Ya Choral's first release was the EP 'Such a Dutchman' on M Squared in 1982, followed by the 'What's a Quaver?' album in July 1983. Guitarist Michael Filewood, formerly of Systematics, replaced Patrick Gibson for their next single, 'Two Lines', on the Red Eye label in August 1985. The next year they were featured on ABC-TV's BeatBox program and videos for "Who's the King?" and "Lonesome No More" received national airplay. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC

The Wonder Stuff ‎– A Wonderful Day [7''] (1986, The Far Out Recording Company)

Somewhere between the mid-'80s and mid-'90s, The Wonder Stuff were one of the biggest bands in the U.K. Starting as a revved-up guitar pop band, later adding offbeat folk influences while occasionally nodding to the excess of the Madchester scene, cleverness and eclecticism were The Wonder Stuff's calling cards. The group was also blessed/cursed with a frontman, Miles Hunt, who had a gift of arrogant gab, delivering bitingly witty lyrics and lively interviews that won plenty of space in the U.K. music press.

The Wonder Stuff were formed in Stourbridge, West Midlands, England in 1986. The original lineup featured Miles Hunt on vocals and guitar, Malcolm Treece on guitar and vocals, Rob Jones aka The Bass Thing on bass, and Martin Gilks on drums. The group began rehearsing in March, and in September they went into the studio to cut their debut EP, 'A Wonderful Day'. Positive press from the EP and early gigs helped The Wonder Stuff land a record deal with Polydor in 1987. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC
