Der Junge Hund was an experimental rock and free jazz band formed in Eindhoven, Netherlands, by Rens Zanderz (guitar, synthesizer, vocals), Ger Van De Beuken (guitar, and also Z'EV collaborator in the 'The Invisible Man / The Old Sweat' album‎), Horst Rickels (saxophone, also in Maciunas Ensemble) and Rik Van Iersel (drums, later in Beukorkest). Der Junge Hund relased two albums, ‘Ridders’ (1981) and ‘Alte Und Idioten Werden Niecht Viel Gefragt’ (1982) and several tapes. They also recorded as Simulated Wood from 1983 to 1985, releasing the live tape ‘Simultaan’.

Alan Licht ‎– Sink The Aging Process [LP] (1994, Siltbreeze)

As guitarist with '90s indie rock group Run On, Alan Licht was known as a crafty pop sideman. As a member of Rudolph Grey's Blue Humans, he summoned feedback and noise from his guitar in the free improvised music context of post-punk New York. On this solo record, his love for minimalist music comes to the fore, presenting two side-long tracks of droning feedback that recall Terry Riley in their mantric intensity. "Betty Page" is a swirling and hypnotic noise-drone that collapses under its own weight; the guitars at times bring to mind Eno and Robert Fripp on 'No Pussyfooting'. While the flip side, "Polarity," is credited to Mike Watt, it is apparent that Licht is making a joke on the concept of it being a cover of the Minutemen, as the prevailing drone hypnotizes for some 20 minutes. Leading a new wave of minimalism coming from the post-rock quarter, Licht's explorations go a step further on 'Rabbi Sky', his subsequent solo album. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC]

100 Flowers ‎– Presence Of Mind [7''] (1982, Happy Squid Records)

Originally formed in the late '70s as an intentionally silly punk band called The Urinals, 100 Flowers organized a few years later (around vocalist John Talley-Jones and vocalist/guitarist Kjehl Johansen) with a sound more rooted in angular post-punk. Based in West Los Angeles, the band recorded a self-titled album for Happy Squid in 1983 and followed with an EP the next year, but disintegrated soon after. Wax Heroes ‎– Sher [7''] (1983, Electric Eye Records)

 

Wax Heroes, from Treviso, Italy, managed to capture the sound of transition between punk and post-punk. The songs were based on guitars with a coarse grain reminiscent of the Crisis of Douglas P. and Tony Wakeford, while the atmosphere -thanks to a powerful and enveloping bass- echoed those of the inescapable Joy Division. The guys were good at building melodies and pressing rhythms, but they were above all able to write pieces of impact, some of which are anthemic ("Sorrow Remains", "Win By Losing") Another small but precious piece of the Italian post-punk mosaic. Shock Headed Peters ‎– Fear Engine [LP] (1987, The Produkt Korps)

 

Former Lemon Kittens leader Karl Blake started the Shock Headed Peters in 1983 with Clive Glover, Ashley Wales, Mark Rowlatt, and David Knight. The band's first single, 1984's Stephen Street-produced 'I, Bloodbrother Be', caught a fair amount of attention for its subject matter which dealt with a romantic relationship between two men. The full-length 'Not Born Beautiful' was released in 1985 and, like its teaser single, came out on the El label. 'Life Extinguisher', a four-song EP, was released by Beach Culture the next year. Rudolf Eb.er’s rites and artefacts are portals to the traumatic expanses and abysses of human existence. Regarded as psychopomp or art-brut shamanist, his trail of work leads deep down to -and through- the nethermost regions of the human psyche. Rudolf Eb.er’s research de-occults the psychic body through psycho-physical tests and trainings. He employs and combines abreactive and cleansing actionism with sonic rituals, psychoactive acoustics and close-up fieldrecordings of nature and decay, generating audio-environments into which he plants grotesque psycho-magic rituals and tantric exercises that trigger a nondual, higher awareness. 

 

Rudolf Eb.er aka Runzelstirn & Gurgelstøck founded the Schimpfluch extreme and outsider artist collective in Zürich in 1987. Schimpfluch exponents are highly regarded for their unique and obscure aural and visual work; their confrontational, physically demanding performances and shock treatments remove the boundaries of the body and open up accesses to the collective unconscious. The Perfect Disaster ‎– Asylum Road [LP] (1988, Fire)

 

Band leader Phil Parfitt originally started out in punk band Varicose Veins releasing the now highly collectible single 'Incredible' in 1978. He followed it with 7" releases fronting both Orange Disaster and The Architects Of Disaster (whose rhythm section departed to form Fields of the Nephilim) before settling on the Perfect Disaster moniker. The group's Velvet Underground-influenced alternative pop/rock first caught on in France, where they released both a self-titled album and self-titled EP 1985. The original lineup consisted of frontman/singer/saxophonist (and later guitarist) Parfitt, bassist John Saltwell, guitarists Alison Pate (also ex-Varicose Veins, Orange Disaster, and Architects Of Disaster) and Dan Cross, and drummer Malcolm Catto. 

 
The band eventually secured a contract in the U.K. with Glass Records, and inaugurated the deal with the 1987 EP 'Hey Hey Hey' (which was recorded with Catto's replacement, Martin Langshaw, on drums). It was followed later in the year by a re-release of the self-titled debut album (which was slightly re-sequenced, re-packaged with new art, and included an additional track culled from the French EP). The band capped what was a productive '87 with the 'Bluebell' single, Saltwell's last recording with the group. 1988 saw the the band sign with London's Fire Records, welcome new bassist Josephine Wiggs, and release the 'T.V. (Girl On Fire)' EP and 'Asylum Road' album. The LP, based on Parfitt's experiences working in a mental hospital, also gave the band their first U.S. exposure via a licensing deal with Los Angeles label Genius Records. [SOURCE: DISCOGS]
