Jesse Garon & The Desperadoes / The Fizzbombs – Wild Rumpus [7''] (1987, Noakes)

Jesse Garon & The Desperadoes was an Edinburgh-based act that emerged in 1986. Initially viewed as an informal venture -its founding line-up was largely drawn from members of another group, Rote Kapelle- The Desperadoes nonetheless established themselves as the leading exponents of the city’s ‘shambling’ scene, alongside the more fêted Shop Assistants. Fran Schoppler (vocals) Andrew Tully (guitar/vocals), Angus McPake (bass) and Marquerita Vazquez Ponte (drums) provided the core of a unit that made its debut with the melodic ‘Splashing Along’, a single sympathetically produced by ex-Jesus And Mary Chain bass player Douglas Hart

The Fizzbombs were a short lived Edinburgh band who consisted of Katy McCullars on vocals, Jesse Garon & The Desperadoes' members Margarita Vasquez-Ponte (guitar / backing vocals) and Angus McPake (drums) and Ann Donald from the Shop Assistants on bass. The band existed between 1987 and 1989.

Hi Sheriffs Of Blue – Hi Sheriffs Of Blue [12''] (1982, Jimboco Records)

The No Wave era of NYC was a short, dark flash of energy that was extinguished almost as soon as it was noticed. It happened so goddamn fast that if you missed the imaginal cut-off for inclusion by a few weeks, you were forever written out of the picture. The Hi Sheriffs were just outside our temporal markers, despite the fact they'd played Tier 3, the Mudd Club and everywhere you'd think would matter. But look, they were as second gen No Wave as The Raybeats, Bush Tetras and 8 Eyed Spy. Shit moved fast. The fact that the Hi Sheriffs were devolved from The Girls did not mean shit. They were perhaps only weeks too late to make the No Wave cut (something they'd immediately wanted to hit after The Girls played Tier 3 with Basquiat's band, Gray). They were like a crazed version of DNA playing the blues. Even Lydia Lunch liked 'em. She did not record with them until later but even she knew she was beyond No Wave at the point of 8 Eyed Spy. It was a weirdly specific scene in many ways. But sonically, it bore lots of fruit. And one of the first, best and most blues-wailingest of its proponents was the Hi Sheriffs Of Blue. F:A.R. – Da Consumarsi Con Grazia [LP] (1985, ADN)

F:A.R. (Final Alternative Relation) was an Italian industrial prime-movers, led by Mauro Guazzotti (later known as MGZ). This album is full of dense, collaged, avant soundscapes that meander and twinkle through layers of radios and TVs, and the wall of sound that was created is fantastic in all the pieces, like a symphony from another planet. Étant Donnés – Plutôt L'Exil Du Cinq Doré [7''] (1983, Vita Nova)

Etant Donnes is a French duo named after Marcel Duchamp's last major work. The group consists of brothers Marc and Eric Hurtado, born in Morocco and working mainly as performance artists and musicians. Their sound can be described as a mix of field recordings, found sounds and sometimes whispered, sometimes violent vocals. They describe their sounds like this: 'Through Marc and Eric, it is the volume of each word that becomes an object-sculpture, together with the power of their bodies expressing their voices. Each event is a scream -indeed even the glissando- of the strength of the word that sometimes abruptly becomes a rock, a solid surface, not in the least fluvial, as is the narrative of a tale, novel or poetic epic. With both of them, there is no more trace of ancient prosodies, no more trace of the incomprehensible Sainte-Beuve who could claim: 'I have to collect a volume of prose'. The word, the voice, the volume take shape with each other, unveiling a theater that theatre usually ignores, which has given it such things as a Samuel Beckett's "Fin de Partie". Over the years Etant Donnes have collaborated with people like Lydia Lunch, Michael Gira, Alan Vega and Genesis P-Orridge. [SOURCE: FORCED EXPOSURE]

Dios – Escrito En Los Cielos [12''] (1985, DRO)

Multitudinal group formed by Juana Izquierdo "Juana de la Cruz" (voice), Vicente Gil "Cristian Dios" (voice and keyboards), Joaquín Carretero (guitars and percussion), Fernando (bass) and Pablo Zedena (drums and percussion). Both Joaquin and Pablo came from Parabellum, and Fernando from Anti-Dogmatikss. They began with the name of Dios, with which they recorded the MiniAlbum 'Escrito en los Cielos' (DRO, 1985). All their work and, of course, the staging, had a great sacrilegious charge, clearly provocative but with a true existentialist knot.

Already as Cristian Dios, they recorded a Mini-Lp in 1986 for Tuboescape entitled 'La Musica de las Piedras'. Two years later they released a second single for Crack Management: 'Mejor no Haber Nacido / Hey Angel'. [SOURCE: GRUPOS NACIONALES NUEVA OLA 80]

Circus Mort – Circus Mort [12''] (1981, Labor)

The esteemed Michael Gira kicks off his wheeling musical career with this self-titled Circus Mort EP, their sole release. Merely 4 songs in length, it is a far cry from what his numerous future projects would venture forth and endure, in length, variety, and content. Scattered here is the defining factor of Swans's eponymous EP & ensuing debut full-length: Rhythm. A galloping display of one, "Yellow Light" is more fitting of a dark cabaret label than "post-punk". Though also signalling what is to come in gloomy depictions of terrible circumstances, Gira's far more juvenile voice separates this release from the mulch of 'Filth', and the sludge of 'Cop'. Rather, it gives the atmosphere some gusto, a constantly kinetic and energetic sound. Very prominent is the bass, as with most post punk, though it may come as a surprise for one to find the eminent and frankly comfortable usage of synths, something that Swans would not see being present within their output for the rest of the decade. A fair warning, this is certainly not an album to be misrepresented as a "Swans completionist" record. It must be regarded in its own right, and it certainly earns its respect in its due diligence to stand apart yet not alienate. The hooks and choruses here feel very buoyant; too buoyant for whom we have come to known as Michael Gira. Regardless, its 14 minutes is of phenomenal value, and proper entertainment is promised. Bourgie Bourgie – Breaking Point [7''] (1984, MCA Records)

Formed in Glasgow in 1984 from the ashes of The Jazzateers, Bourgie Bourgie signed very quickly to MCA. Two singles failed to chart in the UK Top 40, despite plenty of press coverage, and an LP was partially completed when Paul Quinn became unhappy with the musical direction and left the band. The remaining members reverted back to the Jazzateers name and failed to have any further success before finally splitting for good.

"Breaking Point" is one of the greatest songs Bowie has never written, set to one of the dumbest keyboard and string arrangements imaginable. Apparently this 7" remix was done on request by their record company MCA, who considered the far superior original demo, which had better, less meandering vocals, more percussion and a guitar solo to die for, too uncommercial. Pure bliss. Lost classic. Missed opportunity. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC]
