Founded by Paul Rixon (The McTells) and Gillian Elam in 1983 in Hertford, UK, Bi-Joopiter existed originally as a cassette-only recording label, though later they embraced vinyl. Paul Rixon was also in the The Twins and Rig Veeda with Bi-Joopiter co-founder Gillian Elam. This cassette is a bag full of songs. Exploration through feedback and chime bells. Jesse Garon & The Desperadoes / The Fizzbombs – Wild Rumpus [7''] (1987, Noakes)

 

Jesse Garon & The Desperadoes was an Edinburgh-based act that emerged in 1986. Initially viewed as an informal venture -its founding line-up was largely drawn from members of another group, Rote Kapelle- The Desperadoes nonetheless established themselves as the leading exponents of the city’s ‘shambling’ scene, alongside the more fêted Shop Assistants. Fran Schoppler (vocals) Andrew Tully (guitar/vocals), Angus McPake (bass) and Marquerita Vazquez Ponte (drums) provided the core of a unit that made its debut with the melodic ‘Splashing Along’, a single sympathetically produced by ex-Jesus And Mary Chain bass player Douglas Hart. 

 

The Fizzbombs were a short lived Edinburgh band who consisted of Katy McCullars on vocals, Jesse Garon & The Desperadoes' members Margarita Vasquez-Ponte (guitar / backing vocals) and Angus McPake (drums) and Ann Donald from the Shop Assistants on bass. The band existed between 1987 and 1989.

Sindy Arthur – What About [Cass] (1987, Bi-Joopiter)

Sindy Arthur were an UK indie pop formed by Mark Flunder (guitarist and drummer), member of groups Cee Bee Beaumont, Moscovite Five, Sportique, Television Personalities and The McTells, and Gina Hartman, member of Marine Girls and Moscovite Five. Their only release was the 'What About?' cassette in 1987 on the Bi-Joopiter label, founded by Paul Rixon and Gillian Elam in 1983 in Hertford, UK, originally as a cassette-only recording label.

Verve – Voyager 1 [LP] (1993, Jolly Roger Recordings)

 

This album deserves way more attention than what it receives. It’s not overly long in terms of number of tracks only capping at six of Verve’s earliest shoegaze monsters, but every minute of this album is staggering. The bass sets a fantastic groove on tracks like "Slide Away" and "Gravity Grave", but the effects on the guitars on those two tracks make them incredibly special. This version of "Gravity Grave" is absolutely electric and the noisy-ness that the studio version doesn’t have takes it to another level. "One Way to Go" is another track that blows its studio version out of the water and it’s drop in the latter half of the track gives the goosebumps. The next track is a very rare one called "South Pacific" that has some of the best guitar work on the entire album from Nick McCabe and this track feels like it really explodes in between the verses. "Already There" is another blistering track similar in vein to it’s album-mate "Slide Away" and is another very strong addition to the album. Finally we have a live version of the early classic Verve track "She’s a Superstar". This is essential listening for anyone who’s a fan of shoegaze. [RATE YOUR MUSIC]

Bleach – Eclipse E.P. [12''] (1990, Way Cool Records)

A solid EP. "Decadence" is a catchy energetic track that sounds like a blend of Lush and Dinosaur Jr. "Wipe It Away" it's about hating one's job, and the daily grind and instrumentally it's pretty engaging with it's Joy Division-y punk leanings. "Crimson 'O'" sounds Joy Division-y too with its hypnotic drums and bass, and abstract guitar wallpaper. Vocalist Salli Carson sounds like a possessed Miki Berenyi. The strings that come in near the end kind of sound MIDI-like (in the way that early "Final Fantasy" game-music strings sound) but it kind of works. Jesse Garon & The Desperadoes ‎– Billy The Whizz [12''] (1986, Narodnik)

The original members of Jesse Garon & The Desperadoes were Andrew Tully (guitars / vocals), Eric Webster and Angus McPake (bass guitar), Fran Schoppler (vocals), Margarita Vasquez-Ponte (drums), Kevin McMahon (guitars), and Stuart Clarke (guitar). Tully, Webster and Vasquez-Ponte were also members of Rote Kapelle, a band that was active from 1985–1988.

This initial line-up recorded the first two singles, 'Splashing Along' and 'The Rain Fell Down' (described by one reviewer as a "pop gem that's not to be missed") on Narodnik Records. With the departure of McMahon and Clarke, Bruce Hopkins and John Robb were drafted in for third single, the 'Billy the Whizz' EP; these being replaced on a more permanent basis by Michael Kerr (of Meat Whiplash).
