Fetus Productions – Fetalmania [12''] (1983, Flying Nun Records)

Released in 1983 on Flying Nun Records, 'Fetalmania' by Fetus Productions remains one of the more unconventional releases associated with New Zealand's independent music explosion of the early 1980s. Although Flying Nun would later become closely linked with the shimmering guitars and introspective songwriting of the Dunedin Sound, its early catalogue was remarkably eclectic. Experimental electronics, post-punk, performance art influences and outsider creativity all found a home on the label, and Fetus Productions fitted perfectly within that open-minded environment.

Fetus Productions was conceived as a conceptual project rather than a traditional group. The original line-up featured Jed Town, Sarah Fort and Mike Brookfield, each bringing different creative interests into the mix. Brookfield became known for his striking and often disturbing medical illustrations, imagery that complemented the project's fascination with the unsettling and the unconventional. Away from recording, he also ran Virus, an alternative clothing outlet that became part of New Zealand's underground culture from the mid-1980s through to 2001. Jed Town later moved to London, where he earned respect within electronic music circles as producer, composer and DJ Jed Eye before eventually returning to New Zealand to compose music for local television.

'Fetalmania' captured a period when artistic experimentation was flourishing across independent scenes worldwide. Built around synthesizers, drum machines, stark rhythms and detached vocal performances, the record explored themes of anxiety, alienation and fractured identities. Its six tracks, including "I Am A Criminal", "Utter Frustration" and "Desert Lands", reflected an approach that drew as much from conceptual art and industrial textures as it did from post-punk. Recorded at Groovex with engineer Phil Punch, the release stood apart from many of its contemporaries while sharing the same adventurous spirit that defined the era.

Flying Nun Records, founded by Roger Shepherd in Christchurch in 1981, played a crucial role in documenting and supporting local artists working outside the mainstream. The label's willingness to embrace originality allowed vastly different acts to coexist within its catalogue. While Flying Nun is often celebrated for launching influential guitar groups, records such as 'Fetalmania' demonstrate how broad its vision really was during those formative years.

Today, 'Fetalmania' remains a fascinating example of the more experimental side of New Zealand's independent music history. Its combination of conceptual ambition, electronic experimentation and underground aesthetics offers a glimpse into a scene where creative freedom often mattered more than commercial considerations. For anyone exploring the deeper corners of the Flying Nun catalogue, this release reveals a different facet of the label's legacy and the restless imagination that shaped New Zealand's alternative culture during the early 1980s.

Underground Life – Away [7''] (1983, Suono Records)

Underground Life were formed in 1977, during the punk era, with a temporary formation of young musicians, founded by the drummer Lorenzo LaTorre. Singer Giancarlo Onorato joined the band last. In 1979 they released their first 45, 'Noncurance / Blackout!' on the Disco Ivoire label, exposed in the windows of London's Rough Trade shop as “italian punk rock”. In 1980 followed a hard-to-find tape, 'I Fiori Del Male'. After some live shows, they released the 12" 'The Cross' (1981) on Trinciato Forte Records and their first LP 'The Fox' (1982) on Suono Records. After joining the legendary I.R.A. Records labels, some more albums were released, including two tracks for the compilation 'Catalogue Issue' (1984) shared with Litfiba, Diaframma and Moda. Musically the sound of Undeground Life were between the classical new wave sounds and the minimal synth stuff. [SOURCE: LAST.FM]

Breeding Ground – Tales Of Adventure [LP] (1986, Fringe Product)

Breeding Ground was formed in Toronto in 1981 and subscribed to the cold wave mould of acts like New Order's school of rhythm. Their first release was an untitled 4 song 12" EP in 1982 on Mannequin Records and featured original drummer Ken Jones. They would receive notoriety with the independent 12" single "Reunion"/"Slaughter" in 1983 on Fringe. It was quite successful at college radio stations and ended up selling out three pressings. The follow-up LP, 1986's 'Tales Of Adventure', was produced by ex-Blue Peter guitarist Chris Wardman (who later joined the band for a short period) enlisting the help of Alta Moda singer Molly Johnson and Jason Sniderman on keyboards. The record made it to No.1 on the campus charts and No.60 on CFNY's "Best 86 of '86" based on the success of the single and video for "Happy Now I Know" and spawned the hit "This Time Tomorrow", a nicely gothic but light tune, brisk jangle pop with a dark atmosphere.

Claustrofobia – Arrebato (Música Per A Vetllades D'Intriga) [LP] (1984, Wilde Rekords)

Claustrofobia, from Spain, presented an arty and theatrical synth-pop, similar to Kan Kan or Artery, typified by "La Espia Que Me Amo", further enhanced with traditional flamenco guitars in "Sueños De Donna". "Sombras En La Alcoba" navigated towards a mixture of dark-wave and the noir soundtrack-theme, while "Amor Sensible" was even more eclectic, a blend of disco beats, ambient spooks, incantations, and a middle-eastern chorus. Eclecticism isn't a panacea though, and it's only till "Rapsodia Bajo El Volga" that we encounter a real highlight, a ghostly and cursed piano theme, accompanied by a dejected vocal delivery and desolate sound-effects. All the while, "Lagrimas Por Un Bolero" was their most violent moment, but again behind the paroxysmal wall of synthesizers and guitars lay a fondness for the traditional Spanish ballad. Voice Farm – Double Garage / Elevate [7''] (1981, Optional Music]

Basically a duo consisting of vocalists/keyboard players Myke Reilly and Charly Brown, the San Francisco-based Voice Farm debuted in 1982 with 'The World We Live In', an album consisting of their half-instrumental, half-poetic songs put to synthesizer shadings and light percussion. Five years later, Voice Farm returned for a self-titled album on Ralph Records; Reilly and Brown, though still just a duo, added a guitarist and several backing vocalists for a dance-oriented sound that still made heavy use of the keyboards. After another long gap between recordings, 'Bigger Cooler Weirder' was released in 1991. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC]

Alphaville – De Mascaras Y Enigmas [LP] (1983, DRO)

Alphaville were a Spanish 80s alternative rock group from Madrid and one of the great references of the darkest and most sinister post-punk aspect of the Spanish eighties scene with Décima Víctima, Parálisis Permanente, Agrimensor K, Desechables o V2 Berlín

Active from 1980 to 1986 with José Luis Fernández Abel (leader, ideologist, voice and guitar), José Luis Orfanel (solo guitar), Daniel Mendialdúa (bass), Juan Antonio Nieto (drums, percussion), and José Carlos "Charles" Sánchez (keyboards, trumpet, harmonica, violin), after the first EP recording, Daniel Mendialdúa was replaced on bass by Pablo Vega. Almudena "Jane" de Maetzu (La Mode) and Carmelo (La Decada Prodigiosa) also pass through the formation.

In 1983 appears the first album titled 'De Mascaras y Enigmas' where its sound is definitely aimed of powerful and atmospheric guitars and suggestive keyboards. Their influences are of English groups like Joy Division or Echo & the Bunnymen but they are able to create a very distinctive style that deserves a more than acceptable criticism.

Minimal Man – Safari [LP] (1984, CD Presents, Ltd.)

Less experimental, ramshackle and nightmarish than 'The Shroud Of', and much closer in vein to traditional post-punk, while also being more focused and cohesive and still very, very dark in its own right. Don't let the '80s synths and the relatively glossy production job fool you, this is clearly music made by a very haunted individual -Minimal Man brainchild, Patrick Miller. Apparently he struggled with drug abuse his whole life, and the music seemingly reflects that.

The record feels like an American version of Colin Newman's 'A-Z'. It's got a similar, manic feel, sometimes with an epic tone ("Show Time"), sometimes discordant and funky ("You! You!"), eerie and paralyzing ("2 Little Skeletons"), vibrant and anthemic ("In Your Heart"), revisiting the Bauhaus-ian stomp ("Stop Running"), or with more direct punk energy -replete with Martin Hannett-like effects ("Shadows Pay A Visit"), claustrophobic and hallucinatory ("What's Not There"), epic and yet mournful ("Pull Back The Bolt"), solemn and yet paranoid ("Ascension"). Emerald Vein ‎– Existence [LP] (1988, Sub Rosa)

Emerald Vein is a completely unique sound that is difficult to compare with anyone. With elements from both progressive rock and the avante-garde scene, the band almost defies genres. At times minimalistic and at times dense, Emerald Vein has a sound which you will immediately love and never forget.

Before Emerald Vein, band founder Bob Young was in the band Uzi which opened for groups like Sonic Youth. After that Young formed a band with the bass player and another singer called A Scanner Darkly which signed to Sub Rosa Records in Belgium. The group did one LP called 'This Is the Way'. Shortly after that Bob Young was born again and quit the band. He began Emerald Vein as a recording project and did all the instruments and sequences. There were a few people playing different things like Terry Donahue on drums and Mimi Thiel on vocals. Emerald Vein released two albums on the Sub Rosa label from Belgium. They received limited exposure in America as Sub Rosa concentrated on European distribution.  [SOURCE: LAST.FM]

V-Sor, X ‎– From The Mouth Of No King [LP] (1989, Dossier, Ear-Ruption) ‎

Diving into the past of rock music is like submerging into the ocean –the deeper you dive the rarer pearls you may come up with. And 'From the Mouth of No King' is one of the rarest. The band decided to call themselves V-Sor, X because they wanted their name being bizarre and absolutely indecipherable. And so it is with their music –it is weird and absolutely keeping itself for itself except probably for some occasional music pearl divers too. All the songs here are different but every one of them is exceptional and beautiful and though many of them are minimalistic the impression made by the entire album is maximally rich. Executive Slacks ‎– You Can't Hum When You're Dead [LP] (1984, Fundamental)

The Executive Slacks' 'You Can't Hum When You're Dead' was another obscure jewel from the early 80's. "The Bus" sounded like a fragmented funk-rock version of the industrial noise of the Swans, but mostly payed tribute to the anarchic kraut-punk of early D.A.F.. The same applied to the dysfunctional chaos of "30 Years" and the orgiastic electronic-punk of "Cinema", while the cyber psychedelia of "So Mote It Be" was revolutionary enough to label it a precursor of trip-hop. The real attraction in these tracks is the ever evolving amoebic background, as in the abstract tribal mayhem "Sexual Witchcraft", again, revolutionary enough to label it as a predecessor to Black Dice's mutant electro-punk. Unfortunately side-two followed a more traditional industrial-punk formula, but it was still pretty wild rock 'n' roll, with the deformed vocals in particular giving it a violent and demonic feel. Carmina Burana ‎– 240 Days Of May [12''] (1987, Plataforma Discos)

During the mid-eighties Carmina Burana raised as a "rara avis", ahead of their time and ignoring any conventional sound. Influenced by post-punk British bands and prog-rock artists like King Crimson, Carmina Burana mixed in their songs all kind of surreal sounds, with mostly depleted instruments and practically indecipherable lyrics, but despite all this, they signed throughout their trajectory two of the best pieces written by a Spanish band, "El Telar de la Locura" and "De las Danzas Apócrifas". Carmina Burana formed in Valencia in 1983, and its original line-up was formed by Manolo Fernández (voice and guitar), Andrés Blasco (bass and violin), and José Carlos Pernías (guitar). New Buildings ‎– Le Dernier Homme [12''] (1983, Klamm Records)

The bassist of New Buildings (Gat) used to be seen in all the concerts that fell with eyedroppers by Barcelona. Impossible to imagine then that fate would keep them the possibility of commercial success, but a wise decision of the group would dismantle the illusion of less edifying business. A declaration of rebelliousness that would begin to take shape in the days of Basura, one of the first punk groups of Barcelona. That uprooting lasted a couple of years, the time that goes to discover The Sex Pistols in a bucket of an Andorran store to get the Gong or Incredible String Band records. The connection of these bands of lysergic folk with the work of Pau Riba was decisive. In a record time they went from officializing the punk in Catalonia to recognize in the most restless acoustics a new toy to continue growing. La Truita Perfecta -which was its name- had an ephemeral life. The news that came about Devo, Talking Heads and Joy Division gave another bump in the style of the group. They adopted a new name: Ultratruita. It lasted two and a half years, until certain tensions with the leader of the group (Panotxa) took to Gat to cut short and to continue moving card. He took with him Jeanette, the singer. They chose the name of New Buildings in honor of Einstürzende Neubauten (translated "collapsing new buildings"), that Berlin band that in 1982 shattered the paradigms of rock from a brutal atonality and the use of materials of industrial waste like a solid alternative to the conventional.
