Hanatarashi - 2 [LP] (1988, Alchemy Records)

The noise, you know (especially in its higher forms), is a scientific affair. If all of the more extreme forms of rock could coalesce into a frenzied and shiny madness, amplified by hundreds layers of pure sonic power, the only monstrosity that could come out is the second Lp of Hanatarash. By themselves the goal was prohibitive: overcome the devastation and the quality of a first album that can be rightly regarded as the "Jeffrey Dahmer of garbage". But as the sage teachs, there is just something else endless than universe and human stupidity, the folly of Yamatsuka Eye. And like all great composers of our century, he managed to give birth to the mountain, in my humble opinion the everest of japanoise, towering a swamp of chitterlings, trash, radioactive slags and mutilated corpses who floating on a river of amniotic fluid. On '2' there are no breaks or time-outs: you're immediately catapulted inside a prison riot, and your role is the guard. Eighteen fists on face that reduce to mush the idea that you had previously of "heavy". As often happens, the beautiful game is short and the standouts are the micro-tracks of few seconds, true sonic frostbites of unbelievable beauty (the triad "We Bite Bollocks - Frog Girl 90000 - Detroit Rock City") even if the two real "songs" (a word that loses all meaning in this album) with a seven minutes media ("My Dad Is Car - Gang Nuts Gum") are superb, although more muddy and crawling, but a pair of twins that will give you to sweat. In this trip you can't recognize nothing: guitars? tapes? screams? engines? industrial? no-wave? electronics?, my god, it's a vain hope: you can only see the word NO! stamped everywhere, and add the suffix you prefer to this type of "music" that i personally love over the top. There is only a thing to do before death will do us part: buy this beast on vinyl, put it underglass and hire a digger to destroy your home. And remember to eat 'n vomit this shit noize music, and especially DON'T LISTEN TO THIS RECORD!!. [SOURCE: DISCOGS

The Fast Set ‎- Junction 1 [7''] (1980, Axis)

Junction One’ by The Fast Set, namely avant-synth artist David Knight, was the first release on Axis, the label which became 4AD. The single was backed with a version of T.Rex's "Children Of The Revolution". The Fast Set's only other recorded moment was another T.Rex cover, "King Of The Rumbling Spires", which appeared on the Some Bizzare label's eponymous 1981 compilation, alongside tracks by Soft Cell and Depeche Mode. David went on to work with the Shock Headed Peters and Danielle Dax. [SOURCE: 4AD

The Effigies ‎- Fly On A Wire [LP] (1985, Fever Records, Enigma Records)

"They sound like Joy Division now," you say. And you'd probably be on a more accurate track if you compared them to Joy Division's original incarnation as Warsaw, with equal touches of The Ruts, Gang of Four, Stranglers, Killing Joke, and other English bands who employed guitar effects to make a harsh, gnashing sound instead of tickling and teasing in the U2 mode. Nevermind, this is one of the year's most important LPs, and it's surprising to note it, given that this Chicago foursome has been one of the toughest sounding, harshest, best punk rock bands in the U.S. for half a decade. This might be The Effigies highest moment so far, highlighted by "Machine Brennt" and "Forever I Know." [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC

C.C.C.C. ‎- Reflexive Universe [Cass] (1991, Vanilla)

Japanese noise act formed in 1989 by adult actress Mayuko Hino and her ex-husband Hiroshi Hasegawa. The group became inactive in the late 90s. In November, 1998, end to activity for approximately nine years.

This intense early work by C.C.C.C. pluges you right into a relentless screeching wash of white noise. At about the halfway point in the set, the terrifying screams of what sounds to be a male voice (Hasegawa) begin to attack the listener. C.C.C.C. is a terrific example of Japanese harsh noise in the 90's. There seemed to be no working-up to this level of brutality for them, no flirtation with harshness -they just threw themselves (and the listener) right into the malestrom. Uncompromising stuff. Bag People - Lark's Vomit / Instrumental [7''] (1985, Joey Records, Inc.)

Very obscure noise-rock / post-no wave group from Chicago. Moved to New York around 1982 or 1983, underwent some lineup changes, and busted apart. Three of them got back together as Of Cabbages and Kings circa 1986.

The main players were: Algis Kizys (pre-Swans; pre-Of Cabbages and Kings; pre-Foetus; pre-Glenn Branca; post-Problem Dogs); Carolyn Master (pre-Of Cabbages and Kings; pre-Glenn Branca); Diane Wlezien (pre-Of Cabbages and Kings); Gaylene Goudreau (post-Da!); a drummer named Peter

There's this fantastic 7", 'Lark's Vomit b/w Instrumental', and a song on a tape compilation. Angry female vocals, corrosive guitars, and a very solid, almost prog-influenced rhythm section. Lo-fi recording, no picture sleeve on the single. Supposedly a rather formidable live act after they came to New York. [SOURCE: ELECTRICAL AUDIO

A Popular History Of Signs ‎- Taste [LP] (1988)

Ministry's Al Jourgensen remixed "Ladder Jack" and "House" for the eponymous American 12-inch, a four-song sampling of the band's pre-'Comrades' 45s. Both of those remixes also appear on 'Taste', a 1980-'87 singles compilation that presents an absurdly bloodless trashing of Lou Reed's "Rock & Roll" and adds two previously unreleased items, including an awfully strange cover of John Fogerty's "Run Through the Jungle." 39 Clocks ‎- 13 More Protest Songs [LP] (1987, What's So Funny About.., Psychotic Promotion)

Based in Hannover, a river city in the north of Germany and a gateway to several of the country's river valleys, post-punkers 39 Clocks, AKA the duo of JG39 (AKA Jurgen Gleue) and CH39 (AKA Christian Henjes), existed under the critical radar for much of their time together. Far removed from any potential peers, 39 Clocks harbored a philosophical position just shy of absolute misanthropy, often purposefully alienating themselves from all that surrounded.

Behind the masks, though, were two songwriters of unique voice, who somehow managed to lift the best lessons from The Velvet Underground, ’60s freakbeat music, psychotic garage moves and outsider rock mythology, creating an entirely idiosyncratic, cracked vision of what popular song could communicate. They sometimes called this aesthetic, with perfect brevity and wit, “Psycho Beat.” [SOURCE: RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY

Various - Devastate To Liberate [LP] (1985, Yangki)

Here is a host of songs that, for reasons perhaps not fully intentional, fits together deliciously and more or less sums up the whole sort of England's Hidden Reverse œuvre that manages to adapt that '80s cassette-released synth-pop, martial industrial, tape loops / collages, anarcho punk, BBC Radiophonic Workshop bleeps and a few other things into a cogent, inspiring and gorgeous whole. The title quickly makes sense when considering this compilation was released in support of the Animal Liberation Front which here turns out to be a gratifyingly well-represented cause, only slightly hinted at (if even that) within the music itself. The beast beckons me fairly often with this album, generally late-night listening as it is, affecting me to the point that I wonder why I ever listen to anything different. Perhaps the bigger names on the album having made slightly atypical contributions helps stir up the atmosphere a bit.

I'd say records like this should be the next port of call for anyone really thrown off-balance by more "successful" releases such as NWW's 'Homotopy to Marie', C93's 'Dogs Blood Rising' and perhaps even EN's 'Zeichnungen des Patienten O.T'. 'Devastate to Liberate' is like apéritifs for that sort of thing. Current 93 do the Current 93 thing of looping children's choruses, Crass, NWW and Little Annie play mazy old collages, P16.D4 provide two metal-on-metal treats, while Coil and The Legendary Pink Dots give us pop. Few things are better at convincing you you've spent a day in the doldrums by listening to shiny pop music or doing practically anything else. It's daft finding how hard it is to seek out music even vaguely like this from the past couple of decades. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC

Emil Richards And The Microtonal Blues Band - Spirit Of 1976 / Live At Donte's [LP] (1969, ABC Impulse!)

Emil Richards (born Emilio Joseph Radocchia; September 2, 1932) is an American vibraphonist and percussionist. Richards started playing the xylophone at age six. In high school he performed with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. He studied with Al Lepak at the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, graduating in 1952. After being drafted, he belonged to an Army band in Japan and played with Toshiko Akiyoshi. He cites Lionel Hampton as his first and biggest influence on vibraphone.

In 1954 Richards moved to New York City, where he played with Charles Mingus, Ed Shaughnessy, and Ed Thigpen while doing studio recordings for Perry Como, The Ray Charles Singers, and Mitchell Ayres. For about three years he was a member of a group led by George Shearing, then moved to Los Angeles and worked with Don Ellis and Paul Horn. He led his own band, The Microtonal Blues Band, and spent time with composer and inventor Harry Partch. As a sideman, he accompanied George Harrison on tour and recorded with Frank Sinatra, Frank Zappa, Doris Day, Judy Garland, Nelson Riddle, and Sarah Vaughan.

Richards worked often as a studio musician for movies and television. His credits include playing bongos on the theme song for the television program "Mission Impossible". He has led a band with Joe Porcaro, and he released a solo album, 'The Wonderful World of Percussion'. [SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA
