Fingerprintz – The Very Dab [LP] (1979, Virgin)

This is the most "punk"-like recording the 'Printz ever made, and its rough-hewn charm is immediately engaging. The songs, however, are not all light and happy pop songs, and that gives the record an extra edge. O'Neill and Burns's guitars are aggressive and intrusive (that's a compliment), and this record was one of the great left-field (and now long-forgotten) surprises of the late '70s. DC-P ‎– Bettan [7''] (Konduktör Rekords, 1985)

DC-Pöbeln (or sometimes Dagcenterpöbeln, or the shorter DC-P) was concieved in the Swedish city of Örebro by "Guggi" & "17" in the fine year of 1982 as a piece of confusing grafitti. Tommy Olson being "Guggi". As for "17", it feels like a bit of an outing to reveal his identity as he is now a famous adult oriented rock-producer with a great appetite for cholesterol, but what the heck; he was christened Johan Kugelberg by his parents. That´s the line-up really, apart from them there were no "members" as such; merely collaborators and people who happened to own synthesizers and stuff. People unlucky enough to cross their path. More a concept than a band; which is common now, but from where they came unheard of then. DC-Pöbeln played live twice, and it is symptomatic that the only person present on stage on both occassions was a rather distant relation who performed some wacko kind of rituals without ever being asked. Johan was on stage on the first event, and Tommy Olson on the other. (Oddly enough, both concerts took place in museums) And "17" is not present on the recording of 'Bettan' (though he assembled the material that appears on the b-side). [SOURCE: THE X FILES

Car Crash Set ‎– No Accident [LP] (Reaction, 1984)

Car Crash Set were a leading New Zealand band in the mid 80s pioneering 'electronic' music that was in many respects ahead of their time. The band founding members consisted of Nigel Russell ex-Spelling Mistakes / Danse Macabre, Dave Bulog and Trevor Reekie. Taking their influences from New Order, Suicide and DAF, the band employed cutting edge electronic sounds, guitar overdrive and feedback. The band has released several singles, as well as one album and EP remixed and produced by John Fryer from Blackwing Studios / Mute fame. The band has also tour extensively as well as playing several key supports for the likes of OMD, Shriekback and Hunters and Collectors. They disbanded in the early 90s with members going on to become The Greg Johnson Set. [SOURCE: NEW ZEALAND MUSICIANS AND BANDS

Barkmarket ‎– 1-800-Godhouse [LP] (1988, Purge/Sound League)

An intriguing blend of heavy rock, punk dynamics, and occasional forays into sonic freak-outs somewhere between Sonic Youth and the early Butthole Surfers, New York art grunge trio Barkmarket can at times be frustratingly difficult to pin down, but their best work has a noisy, rattling power. Singer / guitarist David Sardy, bassist John Nowlin, and excellently named drummer Rock Savage joined forces in 1987, promptly issuing the self-released demo '1-800-Godhouse' the following year. A.C. Temple ‎– Blowtorch [CD] (Blast First, Furthur, 1990)

Formed in Sheffield in 1985, A.C. Temple were a powerful UK counterpart to the abrasive experimental guitar bands coming out of the USA around the same time. Early vocalist Dave Giles soon took a back seat to Jane Bromley but remained a co-lyricist to the band throughout their career. However, it was the classic line-up of Bromley, Noel Kilbride, Neil Woodward, Andy Hartley and Jayne Waterfall who recorded their seminal 'Blowtorch' LP and a session for John Peel on Radio 1 in 1987. Critics made favourable comparisons to Sonic Youth and Big Black (Kilbride, in fact, had acted as Big Black's driver for their final UK tour and is one of the named recipient's on Shellac's 'Futurist' LP) but the swirling intertwined guitars and extreme down-tuned bass, combined with Bromley's sonorous vocals and Waterfall's thunderous drumming, were distinctively theirs. Various ‎– Street To Street Volume Two [LP] (1982, Open Eye Records)

Open Eye Records was a label founded by Mike Knowler aka Noddy Knowler, a Liverpool DJ starting at the age of 17 in 1969 mainly playing soul music, being an early exponent of house music in the UK. Between 1978 and 1985 also made his name as a recording engineer and record producer working with Pete Burns (Dead or Alive), Echo and the Bunnymen and OMD

Egypt For Now formed in 1980 by Yorkie and Mike Head (ex-The Dance Party), also featuring Paul Codman (ex-Mutants, Geisha Girls), Ken "Mossy" (The Pale Fountains, Shack), Tom "Jock" Whelan (The Pale Fountains, Shack). Systems were formed by John 'Strange' Hawkins (Vocals, Bass), later in This Island Earth, Kevin Chapman (Guitar), Tony Elson (Drums) and Mike Reed (Keyboards) . They released two 7” between 1980 and 1981. Chinese Religion released only a 7” in 1981, ‘My Motive’, in Per Chance Records.

Games were a pioneering three-piece synth-pop outfit, formed in 1980 and consisting of Brendan Coyle (synthesisers, percussion, vocals), Colin Hughes (synthesisers, percussion, organ, vocals) and Steve Knott (synthesisers, guitar, vocals), from Wirral, UK. The same year, they self-released their first 7" single 'First Law Of Games' followed by a contribution of the two tracks "Unrest In The Real World" and "The Song" to the 'Street To Street Volume Two' LP compilation on Liverpool's Open Eye Records in 1981. Then the band fell apart with Steve moving on under the Games moniker including new band members. Their 7" single 'Dance This Way / Love Canal' still saw its release in 1981. Brendan and Colin moved on as Zephyr In The Swamp, Brendan also played in Some Detergents, and Colin in Sense Of Vision. [SOURCE: DISCOGS]

The Zulus - Down On The Floor [LP] (1989, Slash)

Boston, MA's The Zulus are often used to answering the trivia question, "Whatever happened to Human Sexual Response?" Zulus vocalist Larry Bangor and guitarist Rich Gilbert were founding members of Human Sexual Response, a demented post-punk group that existed from the late '70s to the early '80s. The group split up in 1982. Bangor, Gilbert, and drummer Malcolm Travis then formed The Zulus. The Zulus had a louder, more straightforward rock & roll sound than Human Sexual Response; their angst-laden, guitar-heavy tunes fit well on late-'80s college radio, helping to pave the way for grunge. The Zulus were signed to Slash and released their debut album, 'Down on the Floor', in 1988. 'Down on the Floor' was produced by Bob Mould of Hüsker Dü, one of the Zulus' obvious influences. In 1992, the band broke up. Travis then joined Mould in Sugar while Gilbert and bassist Rich Cortese formed Concussion Ensemble. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC

Yeah Jazz ‎– Six Lane Ends [CD] (Vap, Cherry Red, 1988)

Hailing from Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, England, and formed in 1986 by Kevin Head (vocals) and Chats (guitar), Yeah Jazz were completed by Stuart Ballantyne (bass) and Ian Hitchens (drums). Their attempt to fuse pop and folk while chronicling the sagas of everyday life in a west Midlands rural town gained an Independent Top 30 hit in 1986 with ‘This Is Not Love’. The addition of former Higsons saxophonist and guitarist Terry Edwards to the line-up and the transfer to the Cherry Red label strengthened the band’s sound. Edwards also lent his production talents to the first Yeah Jazz album. Despite encouraging reviews and positive audience reaction, their fortunes took a downward turn. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC
