Rap – Hysteria [12''] (1987, Dogma Records)

The all-female japanese punk rock and deathrock band RAP formed in 1984 and disbanded in 1988. Members were Rouge (vocals, keyboards), Nishiki (guitar), Kaori (bass), Misa (drums, also member of bands such Final Bombs, Geizz, Kyah and of hardcore punk band from Tokyo Last Bomb) and Kinta (drums, also a member of goth / post-punk / new wave band Mannequin Neurose). They released three 7", 'Wrap' (1985), 'Trap' (1986) and 'Rapout' (1986) and a 12", 'Hysteria' (1986), all on Dogma Records. The set of tunes in 'Hysteria' veers into X-Mal Deutschland territory with its sung vocals, slow tempos, and thinned out guitar sound. [SOURCE: MAXIMUMROCKANDROLL

PGR – Cyclone Par L'Immobile Habité [LP] (1988, Permis De Construire)

PGR started life as an industrial group in mid '80s under the Poison Gas Research moniker. Their studio was in a rough area in Oakland. To deter dubious people they affixed a sign with "Poison Gas Research" written on it at the front door. After self publishing several cassettes under this name, the group name was shortened to PGR. Kim Cascone was also ahead of the game on the whole ambient drone vibe, sometimes even with slight World music overtones. Don't let that scare you away though, as this is certainly far from room filler. With friends like Das (Big City Orchestra) and AMK (Anthony Michael King, American experimental musician who was active since the early 80s and created his own label Banned Production) on board, this early LP runs with all the above and more. Highlight would have to be the three part "Time" trilogy. In the haunting "Only Hell Burns Brighter' samples of Stravinsky's "Sacre du Printemps" are used. Very enjoyable. Oi Polloi – Destroi The System! [Cass] (1985, Not On Label)

Oi Polloi are a punk rock band from Scotland that formed around 1981. Starting as an Oi! band, they are now generally more associated with the anarcho-punk genre. The band has become notable for their contributions to the Scottish Gaelic punk subgenre. The name comes from the Greek expression "οἱ πολλοί", anglicized "hoi polloi", meaning "the masses" or "the common people".

The band has gone through about 50 members since their formation, and their only permanent member has been vocalist Deek Allen, who has also been involved in Gaelic-language television. The band has included punks and skinheads. The members have been supporters of Anti-Fascist Action and Earth First!, and they use the motto "No Compromise in Defence of Our Earth," which is an adaptation of Earth First!'s motto. They support direct action in defence of the environment, hunt sabotage, as well as resistance against racism, sexism, homophobia, fascism and imperialism. [SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA]

NNB – Slack / New World [7''] (1978, Wave Seven)

NNB, who formed in Minneapolis in the late '70s, created a fair amount of buzz at the time, being favourably compared to the likes of Television and Pere Ubu. By all accounts, guitarist/vocalist Mark Freeman was the guiding force behind the band, which released a string of singles but no long-player, together with bassist Rusty Jones, drummer Jim Tollefsrud and guitarist Dick Champ

Champ himself recalled, in an interview: “NNB, like a bunch of other Minneapolitans, rolled the dice, hopped into our Ford Econoline van, and relocated to New York in the fall of 1980. About six months later, NNB played the Noise Fest at White Columns, the festival that by some accounts launched Sonic Youth. All of which goes to illustrate: There's a little bit (and sometimes even a lot) of Minneapolis in the history of rock music.” Like Sonic Youth, NNB's music was as challenging as it was addictive, combining a laudable quest for invention with the can-do attitude of garage-rock. The Moderates – Fetishes [12''] (1980, Open Eye Records)

The Moderates were a Liverpool band who had a large local following in the late 1970s and early 1980s and championed by John Peel on his BBC Radio 1 show (the band supported John Peel's Roadshow date at Liverpool University on 2 September 1978). The band's lineup consisted of John Brady (vocals, keyboards), Heidi Kure (vocals), Phil Allen (drums), Tom Gould (guitar), Bobby Carr (guitar, violin) and Mike Pursey (bass, later of Dead or Alive). The Moderates also recorded a John Peel session on 25 March 1981 at the BBC's Maida Vale Studios, produced by Dale Griffin (Mott the Hoople). The session was transmitted on 20 April that year.
