Five Or Six ‎– A Thriving And Happy Land [LP] (1982, Frizz Bee)

Five or Six appeared at the turn of two eras of rock music when everybody was searching for new forms and new means in rock; everyone from new romantics to punks were exploring new territories and widening musical frontiers. As for the more arty musicians as the ones that organised Five or Six there was a vast fallow ground lying ahead of them. And 'A Thriving and Happy Land' is a brilliant and creatively successful endeavour to plough this field and cultivate on it new artful fruits in music. The album is delicate, inventive and innovative blend of post-punk, jazz and progressive rock. This was recorded at the end of 1981 and released in 1982. The B-side's on a thin, gorgeous line between Eno's 'Ambient 1 & 2' and what would become post-rock. That closer's a hell of a thing for 82. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC

Dead Famous People ‎– Lost Persons Area [12''] (1986, Flying Nun Records)

Comprised of members Donna Savage (vocals), Biddy Leyland (keyboards), Wendy Kjestrup (guitar), Jenny Renals (bass), and Frances Gant (drums), '80s alt-rockers Dead Famous People hailed from New Zealand. The group built a following in their homeland with independent releases and eventually decided to relocate to the U.K. Despite fast-turning heads in London due to their live shows, the group split up in 1990, with Leyland and Savage embarking on solo careers. Carl Matthews ‎– East/West [Cass] (1982, Mirage)

Mesmerizing D-I-Y electronic music from Cumbria, UK. Influenced by the Berlin School but, even more, by Tim Blake. Carl Matthews is by no means immune to the maelstrom of geocaching notebooks. Krautrock, guerrilla D-I-Y cassette-era artist, underrated UK electronic composer. Man with a beard, surrounded by synths. Best of all, he was once described as the Edgar Froese of Cumbria. The Tangerine Dream legend needs no introduction here, but the Cumbrian question deserves further scrutiny. Indeed, in spite of the irresistible urge felt by many a chronicler of electronica to claim Carl Matthews for the Berlin School, this is unquestionably an artist who wrote, recorded and released music far from the madding krautrock crowd. Instead, he worked in isolation, splendid or otherwise. [SOURCE: SOUNDCLOUD]

The Bats ‎– And Here Is 'Music For The Fireside'. [12''] (1985, Flying Nun Records)

The Bats' second EP kept the jaunty, homespun pop vein that Clean bassist Robert Scott's other band opened with their 'By Night' debut the year before. The seven songs here all ring with organic hooks and simple phrases. Scott's naiively fragile voice floats along like a beautiful cloud on songs like "Chicken Bird Run," the propulsive "Joes Again," "Claudine," and "Neighbours." Another classic, flawless piece of the stunning mid-'80s Flying Nun pop puzzle. Six of this EP's seven tracks appear on the 1987 compilation 'Compiletely Bats'. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC

Absolute Grey ‎– What Remains [LP] (1986, Midnight Records)

Absolute Grey formed in New York in 1983, playing darkly melodic jangle pop. With two of the members still attending Sutherland High School, the group released a self-titled, six-song cassette on Acid Tapes in 1984. Later that same year they recorded and self-released their first full-length album, 'Green House', which was soon re-issued by indie label Midnight Records. In 1986, the band recorded their second album, 'What Remains', which was produced by Tim Lee of The Windbreakers. Not long after the LP was released, percussionist Pat Thomas and guitarist Matt Kitchen left the group. [SOURCE: DISCOGS

45 Grave ‎– Phantoms [12''] (1983, Enigma Records)

45 Grave was a Los Angeles-based death-rock band whose macabre, morose and sometimes amusing music helped to get the goth-rock genre off to its shambling life. In 1985, after gaining a fair deal of attention via gloom-ridden gigs and several depressing releases, the band split up, with Paul B. Cutler and Dinah Cancer (real name Mary Sims) going on to other projects, including Dream Syndicate, while drummer Don Bolles and bassist Rob Graves formed Silver Chalice with guitarist Geza X

A-side is 2 satisfactory 45 Grave songs, catchy but dated. B-side, "La Tomba", is a weird audio novelty designed to scare the fluids out of vulnerable persons, especially those prone to acid flashbacks. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC

Various ‎– Subtle Hints [LP] (1983, Sane Records)

'Subtle Hints' is the holy grail of the electro-pop/minimal synth genre. Ever growing in popularity this brilliant and highly sought-after compilation LP is highly prized amongst collectors of rare vinyl. This unique snapshot of early 80s creativity has had many a listener question why the obvious potential within those spiral grooves was never realised? Those that have read Louis Barfe's "Where have all the good times gone? the rise and fall of the record industry" may have part of the answer the other part has always existed in Ad Astra's track (the light years ahead of its time) "A&R".

Well, this rare compilation is proof how much music is there to discover. 'Subtle Hints' is a collection of Electropop, Post-Punk, and New Wave bands, some of them who appeared exclusively in this compilation. Most of the songs are demos but they all sound clean and pristine. Lots of hidden gems in here and some bands actually released some albums after this: Art Interface, My Pierrot Dolls released a couple of singles.....I think that's about it. My point is that this compilation is great. Some of the stand-outs (or favorites) include: Mon Amour "Always Tomorrow's Rain", Hidden Pleasure "Beautiful Lady", Time Statues "Statue of the Night", New Vices for the Jaded (Such a kickass name!) "Follow Careers in Modern Love", Squid Diddley "Always There", My Pierrot Dolls "My Pierrot Dolls". It's a shame when such good music is overlooked and garbage is praised on the radio or whatever. But it's out there waiting to be heard. So take that first step and look for it. Try looking for this comp on the internet seeing how it's long out of print. Most of these bands never made it big but for one moment they managed to belt out one or two songs and they came out with some fucking great tunes. Check it out. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC

Звуки Му ‎– Транснадежность [CD] (1994, Отделение Мамонов, Moroz Records)

Led by singer, songwriter, poet, actor, and all-around artistic troublemaker Pyotr Manonov, Zvuki Mu was one of the few bands of the so-called "Russian Revolution" in late-'80s pop music that merited more than a casual glance from Western audiences. (As opposed to bands like the remarkably dull hard rockers Gorky Park.) Formed in 1981 by Manonov, who was already a published author in his early 30s, Zvuki Mu (literally "sounds of moo," an absurdist name that suits Manonov's playful lyrical style) performed increasingly above-ground gigs in Russia and Eastern Europe throughout the '80s. By 1989, as Mikhail Gorbachev's glasnost policies were taking effect and the Iron Curtain was starting to crumble, Zvuki Mu began to make a name for themselves in the West, to the point that Brian Eno signed the group to his own Opal label and produced their first album, 1989's 'Zvuki Mu'. Nearly every Zvuki Mu album has a different lineup than the one before, with Manonov the only constant. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC

Yeah Yeah Noh ‎– Fun On The Lawn Lawn Lawn [LP] (1986, Vuggum)

Yeah Yeah Noh are an "unpop" group formed in Leicester, England in 1983. Originally a product of the DIY post-punk era, they released two albums and five singles while still together in the 1980s, and have had two compilation albums issued since they split in 1986. Yeah Yeah Noh was formed by Derek Hammond (vocals, guitar) and John Grayland (guitar); Adrian Crossan (bass) joined them for the first single along with Graham Summers (drums). Sue Dorey (drums, vocals) was then recruited to complete the line up, debuting on the second single. Two of the band members, John Grayland and Sue Dorey (along with Damian S), published "Printhead", a free magazine focusing on independent music in Leicester and its environs. The band's Peel sessions were collected on the 'Fun On The Lawn Lawn Lawn' album in 1986. [SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA

It is preceded by a locked groove and so has to be played separately to the rest of the side.

The Wirtschaftswunder ‎– Tscherwonez [LP] (1982, Polydor)

The Wirtschaftswunder (sometimes simply called Wirtschaftswunder) was a German band consisting of musicians Angelo Galizia (vocals, Italy), Tom Dokoupil (guitar, Czechoslovakia), Mark Pfurtschneller (keyboards, Canada) and Jürgen Beuth (drums, Germany). They were part of the so-called Neue Deutsche Welle that emerged as part of the English new wave/post-punk movement in the early 1980s and included bands such as D.A.F., Malaria!, or ZK (predecessor of Die Toten Hosen). They entered the national arena with their single "Der Kommissar" (based on the theme music of the German criminal TV series "Der Kommissar" from the 1960s) and released their first album ('Salmobray') in 1981. Their most characteristic feature was Angelo Galizia's singing with a heavy Italian accent. After signing with label Deutsche Grammophon, they released their 2nd album ('The Wirtschaftswunder'), which was not as experimental as the first. After their 4th album 'Pop Adenauer' in the same year and their final single in 1984 they dissolved. [SOURCE: DISCOGS

Vic Godard & The Subway Sect ‎– Songs For Sale [LP] (1982, London Records)

Abandoning their heretofore punk career, Vic Godard redirects The Subway Sect into Cole Porter territory on 'Songs for Sale'. The album is named after the Porter standard "Love for Sale", which is included as the only non-original composition. Godard fashions sweet, carefree pop tunes with such aplomb that "Love for Sale" could almost be mistaken for another original creation. Finger-snapping, piano-dominated lounge music provides an excellent backdrop for Godard's romantic crooning, especially on innocent love songs like "What's Your Name", "Just in Time", and "Hey Now (I'm in Love)". To the band's credit, the throwback approach is fresh and invigorating, avoiding the trappings of similar tributes to yesteryear. Fans of the group's prior releases will undoubtedly be disappointed with the abrupt stylistic turnabout, and Porter disciples will likely miss the double entendres and flippant wit which characterized classics like "Let's Do It". Nevertheless, Godard exudes the confidence of a man who genuinely loves his subject matter and knows exactly how he wants to emulate it. He concentrates on sentimental ditties that occupy the middle ground between naivete and sophistication. His mastery of this narrow niche cannot be denied, and 'Songs for Sale' succeeds as a pleasant salutation to the pre-rock era. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC

The Tesco Bombers ‎– Hernando's Hideaway [7''] (1982, Y Records)

The Tesco Bombers came out of the London Post-Punk scene, supporting acts like The Raincoats and The Mo-Dettes. Their line up drew together members from other groups around at the time including Jim 'Amos' Welton of Homosexuals fame. "Break The Ice At Parties" was released in 1982 on the legendary Y Records as a B side on the 'Hernando's Hideaway' 7". The staccato, off beat saxaphones and guitars are held together with a funky bassline and drums, alowing the music to get away with sounding slightly retarded and clever at the same time, all wrapped up in just under 2 minutes. Rat At Rat R ‎– Rat At Rat R [LP] (1991, Purge/Sound League)

Rat at Rat R was a band formed in 1981 by guitarist Victor Poison-Tete. The music of Rat at Rat R can best be described as no wave guitar-oriented noise music. Originally hailing from Philadelphia, the band soon relocated to New York City's Lower East Side and became one of the highlights of the NYC noise-rock scene, with Sonic Youth, Live Skull and Swans among their contemporaries. Rat at Rat R has strong links to New York City's avant-garde composer Glenn Branca. Branca's cousin, Sonda Andersson played bass until 1988, when she left to play bass in Live Skull. Andersson was replaced by Walter Sipser. John Myers, guitarist for Rat at Rat R, was Glenn Branca's conductor. Their self-titled album was produced by Barkmarket singer/guitarist David Sardy. David Howard played drums on the 1991 release, replacing David Rat, temporarily. [SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA
