The Oroonies – Exalt The Horn [Cass] (1986, Better Days Distribution)

'Exalt The Horn' by The Oroonies is one of those obscure mid-80s cassette releases that feels more like a rumor than a widely documented record. Put out in 1986 through the small, DIY-focused Better Days Distribution label, it exists in that hazy space where post-punk experimentation and home recording culture overlap. Better Days Distribution operated more like a conduit than a traditional label, helping circulate music within a network of like-minded artists and tape traders. Releases were often produced in very small quantities, dubbed by hand, and shared through mail or personal connections. It’s likely that 'Exalt The Horn' only ever reached a relatively small audience in its original run

There’s very little concrete information circulating about the project, which only adds to its intrigue -but there is a bit more to grasp when it comes to The Oroonies themselves. They were a British, largely instrumental outfit operating somewhere between psychedelic space-rock and folk fusion, forming in the early 1980s and remaining active for roughly a decade. Their sound leans heavily into disorientating psychedelia, often blurring the line between structured composition and freeform exploration. They also have some interesting connections: a couple of members were involved with Ozric Tentacles, which helps place them within that broader UK underground psychedelic scene. There was even a sideline acoustic project under the name Cheapsuit Oroonies, suggesting a more stripped-down counterpart to their more cosmic excursions. After years of relative silence, the band resurfaced in 2012 with three original members -Joie Hinton, Tanya Horn, and Boris Orooni- going on to release several CDs and eventually returning to live performances around 2017. That later activity adds an unexpected second chapter to what initially felt like a fleeting cassette-era project.

What is evident from 'Exalt The Horn' itself is its raw, unpolished nature. This wasn’t built in a professional studio environment- it carries the imprint of limited equipment, a lot of creative freedom, and no real concern for mainstream appeal. The sound leans into that distinctly lo-fi cassette aesthetic: minimal drum machine rhythms, warped or drifting synth textures, and occasional guitar elements that feel more atmospheric than structured. Vocals come across as distant and abstract, sometimes closer to spoken word or ritualistic phrasing than conventional singing. Tape hiss and uneven levels aren’t distractions -they’re part of the character.

A listener once summed it up pretty bluntly: “Usable tribal space music.” That description isn’t far off. 'Exalt The Horn' opens with what feels like a collage of didgeridoo-like drones, whale-like calls, and drifting cosmic textures -hard to pin down exactly what the sources are, but undeniably evocative. It’s immersive and unusual, though largely rooted in soundscaping rather than structured composition. Things shift slightly with “Oinkoi,” where a more defined pulse emerges through tribal-style drumming and hypnotic bell tones that hint at Eastern influences. It builds a mysterious atmosphere, though it can come across as a bit familiar in its approach. The title track stretches into a longer tribal space-rock jam -engaging at first, but its length can make it harder to stay fully absorbed, especially as it leans more on repetition than development. From there, the tape continues in a similar vein: a series of loosely structured jams exploring psychedelic, otherworldly textures. There’s a clear avoidance of traditional rock forms -no bluesy solos or relaxed grooves- leaning instead toward something closer to industrial-tinged ritual ambient. The pieces are relatively short, but taken together they can feel somewhat continuous, like variations on the same sonic idea.

That said, the appeal lies precisely in that persistence. It’s less about individual standout moments and more about sustaining a mood -strange, echoing, and slightly hypnotic. 'Exalt The Horn' stands as a quiet, peculiar artifact from a time when making something this odd didn’t need justification -and when a band like The Oroonies could drift between obscurity and rediscovery without ever fully settling into either.

Yard Trauma – Music [LP] (1986, LSD)

'Music' is an LP by the Tucson, Arizona garage-psych band Yard Trauma, released in 1986. It’s not a standard studio album, but more of a compilation that pulls together singles, rarities, and tracks from the band’s early years. Because of that, it feels like a snapshot of where the band was at between roughly 1982 and 1986, rather than a single, cohesive recording session.

The record captures Yard Trauma’s raw, jangly garage-rock sound, with strong psychedelic and punk influences that fit right into the mid-’80s underground scene. Songs like “See Your Face,” “City of People,” and “I Got a Girl (Ours)” show their loose, energetic style and DIY attitude. The material on 'Music' mostly comes from non-LP releases and lesser-known recordings, which is why it’s especially interesting to fans and collectors.

In the band’s discography, 'Music' sits between their 1985 studio album 'Must’ve Been Something I Took Last Night' and later releases like 'Face to Face' and 'Lose Your Head'. While it might not be as polished as their full albums, it’s often seen as an important release because it rounds up a lot of hard-to-find material and gives a fuller picture of Yard Trauma’s early sound and evolution.

Evil Edna's Horror Toilet! – Too Much Gristle In The Blancmange [Cass] (1986, Not On Label)

This tape is the personal concept project of Jane Reaction (ex-Magic Mushroom Band) and her -then- boyfriend Joie Hinton (from Ozric Tentacles). On the recording, as musicians guested members of The Oroonies and The Ullulators, plus Gary "Moonboot" Masters and Kim Oz. Jane Reaction later on reinvented herself as Nana Obscuri. Somewhere between psychedelic dub minimal wave, Ozric Tentacles jam, Gong and some odd groove-funk outsider twee pop, etc., the vocals are sometiems too weak and instrumentation stereotypical. A bit uneven maybe, but lovely, and a rather consistent whole. Mostly it's also original anyway, and doesn't default too much on existing genres. Recommended: "Omné" and "Turkeys Dinner", maybe the longer piece "Floating In The Overflow" if you want a long jam à la aforementioned bands. Horribly under produced, but interesting mix of primitive 80s synthesizer, festival era spacerock, reggae, and even some good old fashioned new wave pop. Lot of cheap digital drums to endure that are awful, though not nearly as awful as that cassette cover. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC]

V-3 – Unbroken Silence [Cass] (1989, Iron Press)

Monomaniacal home-recordists-cum-outsider-musicians are getting to be a rather common breed, but Columbus, Ohio’s Jim Shepard was hunkered down in his primordial lair back when most people thought “lo-fi” meant listening to music on a transistor radio. Far more devoted to noise than most one-man/4-track operations, Shepard -who hung himself at home in October 1998- had a flair for carving out blocks of blue-collar art-rock that rivals fellow Rust Belt survivors like Destroy All Monsters and Pere Ubu (in its heyday). He also tempered the smart-guy sound-assemblage with a dark and smoky garage aesthetic born of toxin-laden practice spaces and beer-soaked lunch hours out behind the plant.

Shepard inaugurated his insular experimentation back in the late ’70s with Vertical Slit, a free-ranging, amorphously constructed band that laid out its lattices of scree around the leader’s extraordinary guitar constructions. You can hear bits of MC5er Fred “Sonic” Smith, Sonny Sharrock and Can’s Michael Karoli in Shepard’s alternately piercing and massaging use of feedback, while his lyrics coat everything in sight with overlapping bile and black humor. An array of cassette releases and micro-pressed records -in editions ranging from 100 ('Slit and Pre-Slit') to a whopping 300 ('The Live EP')- were excerpted for 'Vertical Slit and Beyond', a revelatory 1976-’90 compendium of isolationist howl that would be impossible to replicate in an age of networking and backslapping indie-rock support groups.

Not that the confronto-delic aesthetic that endures in V-3 (a combo Shepard put together) exactly conforms to that of the whippersnappers who have sprung up over the years. In fact, his last-sane-man-on-earth stance might be even more pronounced in this setting. [SOURCE: TROUSER PRESS]

Monster Magnet – Forget About Life, I'm High On Dope [Cass] (1989, Cool Beans)

New Jersey native Dave Wyndorf was already a rock & roll veteran by the time he formed Monster Magnet in 1989, having cut his teeth with little-known punk band Shrapnel (also featuring future punk producer Daniel Rey on guitars) in the late '70s before retiring from music altogether. But after teaching himself guitar, Wyndorf began assembling Monster Magnet with a handful of fellow New Jersey natives, vocalist Tim Cronin, guitarist John McBain, bassist Joe Calandra, and drummer Jon Kleiman. Fusing their metal, punk, space rock, and psychedelic influences, the band developed a sludgy, feedback-heavy hard rock sound that helped them stand out from the era's burgeoning retro-rock movement -also counting The Black Crowes, White Zombie, and many others.

This is Monster Magnet's very first release only available on cassette, that they released on their own label, Cool Beans, in 1989. Essentially it is a collection of 4 track demos, with several of the songs being re-recorded for later albums. For these recordings, Monster Magnet was a three piece consisting of Dave Wyndorf, John McBain, and Tim Cronin. Their debut owes a huge debt to Hawkwind, psychedelia and drugs. They even cover Hawkwind here ("Brainstorm"). It is a noisy stew of abrasive trippy rock. Some of the vocals are questionable but, altogether, this is quite a journey for psych lovers of all stripes. Yard Trauma – Must've Been Something I Took Last Night [LP] (1985, Dionysus Records)

The opening self-titled track presents a different kind of Garage Rock Revival: epic, emotional and lyrical, with a fiery Latin touch. "You Don't Tell Me" though is decisively retro and fairly tame Garage Rock. "Cry A Little Longer" is more poignant, with scathing organ lines and lead guitar. The elliptical and menacing netting of organ lines steals the show in "I'm Invisible", while "You're My Style" abandons any theatrical pretense and unleashes a barrage of raw garage riffs. "Dreamt In Colour" though again offers a more mellow 60's sound. Fortunately, "Situations" steps on the gas and tosses another garage roar. The electrifying Freakbeat "I've Seen You Walking" is also first class. "Only Mistakes" keeps pounding, but "I've Got A Girl" again retreads to a harmless 60's imitation -though the guitar solo is adequately acidic. By the closing, gloom-laden, "Black And White" they finally show an awareness of the New Wave, namely the garage-ish Deathrock of 45 Grave et al. If you only ever grab one Yard Trauma record you should make it this one. It's something of an unheralded masterpiece of the second wave. Highly recommended! [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC]

Doc Corbin Dart – Black Tuesday [Cass] (1991, Not On Label)

Doc Corbin Dart is a musician from Lansing, MI, born March 16, 1953. He is best known as the vocalist for the punk rock band The Crucifucks, whom he fronted from 1981 until 1989 and again from 1996 until 1998. His lyrics are extremely anti-authoritarian and confrontational and the police, the US government, and Christianity are frequently his targets. He released his first solo album, 'Patricia' (named after his therapist), in 1990.

After The Crucifucks demise at the end of the 1980s, Dart opened a baseball card store and ran for mayor of Lansing, MI. He did not win but pledged his support to Lansing's incumbent mayor on the condition that the mayor build a rape crisis center (which Dart had pledged to do if he won) in Lansing (the incumbent won and built the crisis center after the election).

Years later, Dart began calling himself "26" and released an album under that name in 2004. Doc once gave up on swear words and refused to say his old band's name, but this attitude has since gone away. Dart has a mostly negative opinion on the first Crucifucks LP, referring to it as a "spoken word album with a little noise in the background". [SOURCE: DISCOGS]

Moe Tucker's second recording project is a collaborative EP with Jad Fair, founder of the avant-garde group Half Japanese, guitarist Kate Messer and bassist Barry Stock (hence the title). A handful of weeks in a makeshift studio (a garage) for a repertoire consisting mostly of covers, including two obscure songs by The Velvet Underground ("Guess I'm Falling In Love" and especially the torrential "Hey Mr. Rain", perhaps in its most successful version ever recorded); the new "Jad Is A Fink" crowns the experiment, one of the few happy moments in Moe's solo affair. The Ullulators – Banging Bones [Cass] (1995, Better Day Tapes)

The Ullulators are an expansive and alternative space rock / dub / world music fusion band with roots in the UK festival scene, with history going back to the late 80's. In the early days of Ozric Tentacles they had two guitarist, Ed Wynne and Gavin Griffiths. But 'this town ain't big enough for the both of us'. Gavin formed The Ullulators, sharing some bandmembers with Ozrics. Their music was considered awesome, and the tapes released at the time 90 minute gems, 'Beyond The Gates Of Ull', 'Share A Clam' and 'Monads of Mangonia'. There was also a vinyl album, 'Flaming Khaos', and a track on the 'Feed Your Head' Planet Dog compilation. Contrary to other accounts, The Ullulators played for many years after their surpposed demise, playing a small festival each summer, Having achieved cult status over the years, the band continues to release new material and spread it's diverse and expansive musical wings in the digital age. The Universal Congress Of – Joe Baiza & The Universal Congress Of [LP] (1987, SST Records)

Led by Saccharine Trust axewielder Joe Baiza, Universal Congress Of began as the title for Baiza's 1987 solo record, later becoming the name of his fine, funky backing band. On his debut solo LP, he was still playing semi-improvised, avant-garde jazz-rock similar to what he had been exploring in Saccharine Trust, but Baiza/Universal Congress Of's later work was more structured and song-oriented. With Baiza on guitar and Steve Moss on sax, along with excellent bass/drum combinations like Bob Fitzer and Paul Lines or Steve Gaeta and A. P. Gonzalez, Universal Congress Of played rockish jazz/jazzish rock not unlike that of James Blood Ulmer and Ornette Coleman. Their earlier work on SST had a bit more of a punk edge, while the later albums on Enemy were more solidly jazz. [SOURCE: DISCOGS]

Verve – Voyager 1 [LP] (1993, Jolly Roger Recordings)

This album deserves way more attention than what it receives. It’s not overly long in terms of number of tracks only capping at six of Verve’s earliest shoegaze monsters, but every minute of this album is staggering. The bass sets a fantastic groove on tracks like "Slide Away" and "Gravity Grave", but the effects on the guitars on those two tracks make them incredibly special. This version of "Gravity Grave" is absolutely electric and the noisy-ness that the studio version doesn’t have takes it to another level. "One Way to Go" is another track that blows its studio version out of the water and it’s drop in the latter half of the track gives the goosebumps. The next track is a very rare one called "South Pacific" that has some of the best guitar work on the entire album from Nick McCabe and this track feels like it really explodes in between the verses. "Already There" is another blistering track similar in vein to it’s album-mate "Slide Away" and is another very strong addition to the album. Finally we have a live version of the early classic Verve track "She’s a Superstar". This is essential listening for anyone who’s a fan of shoegaze. [RATE YOUR MUSIC]

Christine 23 Onna – Space Age Batchelor Pad Psychedelic Music [LP] (1996, Insignificant)

And so Yamazaki Maso steps away, ever so slowly, from his brutal sound world as Masonna and into the retro-psyche you always knew lurked inside him. Along with former Angel'in Heavy Syrup guitarist Toda Fusao, Christine 23 Onna pull a one off piece of Kosmische Musik somewhere between Maso's own Masonna and Space Machine projects, Amon Düül, Royal Trux circa 'Twin Infinitives' and The No-Neck Blues Band. Free psychedelics at times subdued and, at others, brutal, permeate all of 'Space Age Batchelor Pad Psychedelic Music's tracks (the title a play on the classic Esquivel LP, the songs named in homage to films or OST conventions, pointing to the groups increasingly retro 'soundtracky' atmospherics). Fusao, who played a stronger role in steering the creative ship on later releases, takes the back seat on this album, though her contributions show off her incredibly strong sense of classic 60's style riff logic without resorting to worn out tropes. Great album by a great band. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC

Alco – Threads Of Life [LP] (1972, Alco)

Among the most expensive private-pressed Rock albums, emerging from early-70's British lands, 'Threads of Life' was an album recorded by four high school seniors at the Itchen College, these were Tim Ceasar on keyboard/lead vocals, Paul Fidlin and Ben Brooke on bass/guitars and Julian Ceasar on drums/synthesizers. Although recorded at the University Of Surrey, the first side was executed with the help of the Itchen College orchestra and contains cinematic Psychedelic Rock, based on arrangments for Rock band and orchestra, swirling around chamber orchestrations with full strings and dated psych-realmes rhythms with organ and guitar in evidence. The flipside contains a number of very short songs with psychedelic and poppy influences, very far from the slightly progressive vibes of the opening side. The best the band has to offer during these pieces are the well-arranged polyphonic harmonies and some cuts are based exclusively on a-capella vocal workouts. The material is melodic with organ, synth and piano accompanying the typical bass/guitar/drums output and includes some rural vibes as well.

Musicians’ statement, from back cover: "'Threads of Life’ evolved as a result of the group Alco being involved in a concert containing both rock and classical music. The idea of juxtaposing these different idioms was novel, but not as exiting as the decision to amalgamate the two in a new work to consist of three songs. Existing original material by the group was used as a base onto which additional material was superimposed for the orchestra, which here contains saxophone, six timpani, amplified harpsichord, and synthesister. Both the group and the orchestra are heard separately as well as together and climactic sections are contrasted with passages for solo display. Although the scoring of a work for rock group and orchestra is by no means a new idea, previous attempts have often resulted in the two forces remaining separate. We hope you will enjoy our combined attempt at such a synthesis." [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC

Ministry Of Love – Wide Awake And Dreaming [12''] (1987, Underworld Records)

This obscure Los Angeles band was led by vocalist William Faircloth and was his precursor band before he led the more mainstream band Red Temple Spirits, who released two albums in the late 1980’s. This band mixed in psychedelia, gothic and alternative influences to good effect on this little known EP. “Living In The Moment” is a killer tempo changing psychedelic new wave synth seven minute odyssey. Gothic overtones come into play on the spirited “Psychic Nation”. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC

Kleistwahr – Do Not [Cass] (1986, Broken Flag)

Kleistwahr's take on NWW's tape goofiness, pretty much, odd sounds and all, even going with including a nine-minute or so psychedelic drone rock tune in the midst of the exploration of tape sounds, for better or for worse. Not particularly mind-blowing stuff (unlike some NWW), but it's thoroughly fun while it lasts. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC

The Janitors – Deafhead [LP] (1988, Abstract Sounds)

The Janitors were Andrew Denton (vocals), Craig Hope (slide guitar, keyboards), Pete Crowe (bass guitar), and Tim Stirland (drums). Denton, Hope and friend Phil Storey recorded demos in Leicester's Highfields which Yeah Yeah Noh's John Grayland brought to the attention of some indie labels. Described as "a mixture of Membranes meeting Captain Beefheart", they signed to Marc Riley's In-Tape label, releasing their debut single, 'Chicken Stew' in July 1985 (on which Hope played all of the instruments). It went on to reach the top 10 of the UK Independent Chart. Second single 'Good to be The King' was also an indie hit, reaching number 14, and debut album 'Thunderhead', produced by Jon Langford of The Mekons, peaked at number 6 on the indie albums chart. The band then moved to the Abstract label. In 1988 Phil Storey joined on rhythm guitar. After two further singles, their second album, 'Deafhead', was released in June 1988. [SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA]

Inspiral Carpets – Waiting For Ours [Cass] (1987, Inspiral Carpets)

After The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets were arguably the third most popular band to emerge from the late-'80s/early-'90s Madchester scene. Like The Charlatans, they weren't quite as innovative as the city's two standard-bearers, relying less on the contemporary dance club beats that became Madchester pop's identifying signature. They did, however, share a fascination with trippy psychedelia, particularly the Farfisa organ-drenched sound of Nuggets-style garage rock from the '60s, which set them apart from their peers. It also enabled them to tinker with their sound once the Madchester fad had passed, and the group continued to score hits right up to their mid-'90s breakup.

Inspiral Carpets were formed in the Greater Manchester town of Oldham by guitarist Graham Lambert -who'd been playing around the area since 1982- and vocalist Stephen Holt, who soon both recruited drummer, Craig Gill. The group began to settle on a permanent lineup in 1986 when Farfisa organist Clint Boon joined up, before bassist Dave Swift came into the fold the following year. '60s-influenced garage punk-style demo tapes, recorded at Boon's studio, helped to get the band noticed in Manchester, as did local support slots with The Bodines and Spacemen 3.
