Nachdenkliche Wehrpflichtige – Politik Für Junge Leute [7''] (1980, Zickzack)

In the more offbeat corners of German post-punk, 'Politik Für Junge Leute' by Nachdenkliche Wehrpflichtige stands out as a small but striking release with a lot of atmosphere packed into it. The name Nachdenkliche Wehrpflichtige -“thoughtful conscripts”- already hints at the project’s perspective. The context is late Cold War West Germany, where compulsory military service and rising political tension shaped everyday life for young people. That background seeps into the record, giving it a quietly uneasy tone rather than anything overtly dramatic.

It came out on Zickzack, a label closely tied to experimental acts and the more unconventional edge of Neue Deutsche Welle. Zickzack releases often carried a raw, unpolished character, and this single fits right in with that ethos.

The sound is sparse and tense: clipped guitar figures, rigid rhythms, and vocals delivered in a detached, almost observational way. There’s little interest in melody for its own sake -everything feels functional, like it exists to underline a point rather than to entertain. The production leans toward a DIY aesthetic, adding to the sense of immediacy.

The tracks circle around the idea of politics being simplified and repackaged for a younger audience. There’s an undercurrent of irony in how it presents that dynamic, suggesting a disconnect between institutional messaging and lived experience. Instead of overt protest, the tone lands somewhere closer to skepticism and quiet resistance.

It occupies an interesting middle ground: not as abstract as some experimental contemporaries, but also far removed from the more accessible side of Neue Deutsche Welle. The result feels less like a conventional song and more like a snapshot of a particular mindset -watchful, critical, and shaped by its moment.

KeinMenscH! – Kein MenscH [7''] (1981, Tonträger 58 Hagen)

Kein MenscH was an underground band from the early 1980s from Hagen, Germany. They were also one of the first bands internationally to create new sounds with the Roland TR-808 drum computer and synthesizers such as the Korg MS-20 and Roland TB-303. The music of Kein MenscH combines garish synthesizer sounds with the innovative use of electric guitars. Alternating between punky riffs, harmonious melodies and experimental sounds, they recorded a wide variety of songs about human strengths and weaknesses and deal with the social zeitgeist. Kein MenscH's first single, produced by Tom Dokoupil (The Wirtschaftswunder), was released in 1981 on the indie label Tonträger 58. The following single 'Süchtig' was released in 1982 on the major label Virgin. Tracks by the band were released in 1981 on the Neue Deutsche Welle sampler 'Alles aus Hagen', and in the 1982 TELDEC Records Sampler 'Neue Deutsche Unterhaltungsmusik (Rock In Deutschland, Vol. III)'. Geisterfahrer – Topal [LP] (1983, Konkurrenz Schallplatten)

Geisterfahrer is a dark wave band from Hamburg that was founded in 1979 by Michael Ruff (vocals), Matthias Schuster (guitar, synthesizer, vocals), Hans Keller (violin, synthesizer, bass) and Holger Hiller (synthesizer). Supported by a drum machine, the group had one of their first appearances at the Hamburg "Into the Future" festival, where they provoked the hardcore punks there with improvised electrical noise so much that they were switched off during the gig. Holger Hiller left shortly afterwards to form Palais Schaumburg. Jürgen Weiss (drums, bass) joined the band as a replacement.

Geisterfahrer was the first band to release a single for Alfred Hilsberg's record label ZickZack Records. However, the EP 'Geisterfahrer' was inferior due to the lack of studio technology, so that the group was the first German new wave band to sign a contract with a major label. The debut LP 'Schatten Voraus' was released in 1980. With lyrics by singer Michael Ruff about scarlet fever and plague crosses, as well as a musical mixture of cold wave, gothic rock and medieval moments, Geisterfahrer steered into the dark wave environment and stylistically anticipated the Neue Deutsche Todeskunst. In 1980 they were pretty lonely with this kind of music.

A short later, Hans Keller left to work as a music journalist in New York. Shrinking into a trio, the follow-up LP 'Fest Der Vielen Sinne' turned out to be much more rock. The group now focused more on the dark wave sound a la Joy Division and Bauhaus. With "Himmel Auf Erden" there was even a smaller hit that found its way onto various NDW samplers. After various live concerts, the next LP 'Topal' was released in 1983, which was again produced independently of the industry in its own GF studio, but did not match the success of the previous records. Zaza – Zaza [LP] (1982, Blow Up)

ZaZa (born June 5, 1951 as Peter La Bonté in Munich) is a German pop singer. He became known in 1982 with the song "Zauberstab", which is now considered a classic of the Neue Deutschen Welle. With it he rose in August 1982 in Germany to number 8 in the single charts. The song's lyrics, which were perceived as salacious -in the chorus ZaZa sings "wenn ich Dich kriege, zeigt dir mein Zauberstab die Liebe"("when I get you, my magic wand will show you love")- led to several radio stations banning the song from their programming. In the film "The Flambé Woman", however, the title was played. For ZaZa it remained the only big hit. The follow-up single only just made it into the charts, further successes failed to materialize.

The entire records is full with unique rhythms, percussive machines which keep the club move; weird new wave with strange vocals and absurd child's synthetizers and unconventional saxophone sounds, containing some touch of Kraftwerk in the "Vorbei Ist Vorbei" track. [SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA

Holger Hiller – Holger Hiller [7''] (1980, Warning Records)

Electronic experimentalist Holger Hiller departed from the band Palais Schaumburg in the early '80s and embarked on a solo career. 1983's 'Ein Bündel Fäulnis In Der Grube' established his basic approach of combining keyboard lines with assorted odd sounds, and tense, clattering percussion. 1986's 'Oben im Eck' featured Hiller exploiting new sampling technology to its fullest behind a band including vocalists Billy McKenzie and Kaori Kano, and keyboardist Izumi Kobayashi. After laying low for quite some time, save occasional mixing and editing work for artists like Depeche Mode, Hiller returned with a vengeance in the mid-'90s, issuing 'Little Present' in 1993 and following it with the 'Demixed' collection. A self-titled release followed in fall 2000. This single from 1980 is also sometimes referred to as 'Herzmuskel; an excellent electronic experimental pop recommended for fans of Tuxedomoon and Renaldo & the Loaf type stuff; favorite, "R In S/W", almost a perfect closing track [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC

Geile Tiere – Geile Tiere [LP] (1981, GeeBeeDee)

Geile Tiere was a band formed by artists Luciano Castelli and Wolfgang Ludwig Cihlarz aka Salomé. Both were protagonists of the neo-expressionist, young, anti-capitalist, anti-institutional and punk-influenced art scene of the late 1970s and 1980s in divided Berlin. They were painters, musicians and performers, came together through the Berlin designer Claudia Skoda and initially appeared together as performers. They eventually founded the band Geile Tiere and often performed at Dschungel, one of the legendary Berlin punk clubs of the time alongside SO36 and others. As part of the gay scene (Cihlarz was part of the Homosexual Action West Berlin (HAW)), they repeatedly used bodily motifs for their images and performances and created provocative, transgressive, drastic and shocking works.

This is indeed a very experimental electro album from those good old days. Lots of analog synth sounds, sound collages, electric chirping and only partially comprehensible lyrics. German avant-garde from the time of the Cold War. Absolutely on the edge of good taste and yet still interesting. “Place des Alpes” is still danceable even today and is definitely an insider tip for any avant-garde art party. Recommended also “Liebst Du Mich?”. A very record record for impressing your oh-so-“arty” friends. [SOURCE: Forschungsplattform – Künstlerpublikationen]

Kosmonautentraum is a music project founded in 1980 by the singer Ziggy XY (aka Michael Jarick) and drummer E.K.T. (then both at Der Moderne Man) in Hannover with a strong closeness to the genial dilletants from Berlin (Die Tödliche Doris, Einstürzende Neubauten, Sprung Aus Den Wolken, etc.). Kosmonautentraum published mostly on cassettes and on the ZickZack label, with changing accompanying musicians until the mid-1980s. Ziggy XY also published a volume of poetry titled "Der Deutsche" and published together with E.K.T. the fanzine "Heute", which contained mostly collages and fictitious concert reviews and record reviews. Quick Culture – Quick Culture [12''] (1982, 46 Records, Paradoxx Records)

Really nice obscure new wave from Germany. Funky, relaxed minimal synth with minimalistic, dadaistic female and male vocals (mixing German, English and French lyrics) and some avantgardistic elements -edgy and weird, but still retaining a nice pop feel, just like it should be. It's even quite danceable -"Quick Culture 1" sounds quite like proto-house. And the caribbean and dubby elements on "Bahama-Kosaken" are also nice. But all in all, every song is very listenable, original and entertaining. Original, sympathetic, and recommended to anyone who likes music between experimental and pop. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC]

Ami Marie – Verrückt Nach Glück [LP] (1981, Ariola)

Not much is known about this artist who may have come from the Munich area in Germany, where his lone album was recorded and mixed and where his music was published. This album is actually kind of an interesting mix of ominous sounding nursery rhymes over horror movie minimalistic synth pop from space. Because it's in German, it's even more alienating and bizarre sounding, and it's nearly always catchy. It's like a really bizarre voyage, you never really know what will happen next, but you can't look away. It has some neat Kraftwerk ditties and the first side is quite upbeat (by the genre's standards), with "Spiel Mit Mir" being the obvious hit; the second side is wonderfully moody and atmospheric, "Die Seemann Und Die Rose" is so chilling it's just overwhelming. Seems rather fitting there was nothing from ami Marie afterwards -as this one is such a successful accomplishment it's practically unbeatable. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC]

Din A Testbild – Triptychon [Cass] (1982, Not On Label)

Few bands of the German post punk/new wave era can lay claim to "cult" status, but Din A Testbild most certainly can. Formed in 1978 by Mark Eins and Gudrun Gut, the combo played a significant role in defining the avant-garde music of Berlin and were among the pioneers of Electroclash, long before the genre even existed. In the year they started out, Din A Testbild played at the opening of the legendary Berlin underground club S.O. 36 and in 1980 they appeared at Hamburg's first "In die Zukunft" ("Into the Future") festival, organized by Alfred Hilsberg. 'Abfall/Garbage', their first single, is emblematic of the entire West Berlin music scene from 1978–1982. The group also participated in the seminal "Geniale Dilletanten" event at the Tempodrom in Berlin (1981). Their contribution to German underground cinema and the art scene cannot be captured in a few simple words. Such is the measure of the cult and legend of Din A Testbild. 'Triptychon', a limited edition cassette of 100 copies, was recorded at Homestudio in Berlin/Friedenau' in 1982. [SOURCE: BUREAU B]

Mittagspause – Punk Macht Dicken Arsch [LP] (1982, Rondo)

Mittagspause was an early German (post-)punk band with Janie Jones aka Peter Hein on the vocals. Later he became the frontman of the early Fehlfarben. Some tracks of Mittagspause appeared later in other versions on records by Fehlfarben ("Militürk", "Herrenreiter", "Ernstfall"). This album is a live recording from a 1979 concert in Wuppertal. Recording quality is solid, a little thin maybe, same for the music. It all rather sounds like rehearsal recordings. Besides the title of this album (which means "Punks Makes a Fat Ass"), the interesting thing here are the many cover versions of early German new wave/punk classics, like S.Y.P.H.'s "Zurück Zum Beton" and "Industriemädchen" or Male's "Zensur Zensur" and "Testbild". There also is a cover of Sham 69's "If the Kids Are United" and of a German 1960s classic, "Marmor, Stein und Eisen Bricht". [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC

Kosmonautentraum – Immer Laut Hören Nachbarn Stören [7''] (1980, Not On Label)

Kosmonautentraum is a music project founded in 1980 by the singer Ziggy XY (aka Michael Jarick) and drummer E.K.T. (then both at Der Moderne Man) in Hannover with a strong closeness to the genial dilletants from Berlin (Die Tödliche Doris, Einstürzende Neubauten, Sprung Aus Den Wolken, etc.).

This single has three very freaked-out, experimental minimal synth tracks, mostly instrumental. The radical, futuristic, messed-up and nearly baroque synth-rape noise is interesting and actually quite pleasant and very varied. "Kosmonautentraum" is underlayed with some slow, brooding post-punk, and the rest is also very good -"Der Deutsche" ("The German") has some great, angry lyrics that really capture the obnoxious German way of life.

The single has some cult status in Germany -apparently, many things went wrong during the pressing (low volume at the beginning, wrong label printings), and it got very negative reviews by Germany's punk pope Alfred Hilsberg. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC

Neonbabies – Harmlos [LP] (1982, Ariola)

"Harmlos" means "harmless" in German, and that's pretty much what this album is. A little pop, a little new wave, a flirt with some experimental stuff, but all in all, it's pretty nondescript and undecided... While it's the Neonbabies best album, with a few good tracks ("Carosello", "Moderne Liebe" and "Aiaiaiai"), most of the tracks are just average. Even if Neonbabies are pretty unknown today, they're often cited as Neue Deutsche Welle pioneers. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC

They were part of the so-called Neue Deutsche Welle that emerged as part of the English new wave/post-punk movement in the early 1980s and included bands such as D.A.F., Malaria!, or ZK (predecessor of Die Toten Hosen). Their most characteristic feature was Angelo Galizia's singing with a heavy Italian accent. After their 4th album 'Pop Adenauer' in the same year and their final single in 1984 they dissolved. Flucht Nach Vorn ‎– Flucht Nach Vorn [12''] (1982, Supermax)

Flucht Nach Vorn was a German Post-Punk ("Punk-Funk") band of the so called "Neue Deutsche Welle" (NDW) era and one of various artists performed for the film "Berlin Super 80". They released two 12" EPs: 1982's 'Flucht Nach Vorn', 1984's 'O Cubano' and an LP: 1985's 'Talking Is Over'. Epic schizo-funk madness like only Germans can do. [SOURCE: LAST.FM
