Illusion Of Safety – More Altitude Than Attitude: IOS At 14,000 Feet [Cass] (1988, We Never Sleep)

Released in 1988, 'More Altitude Than Attitude: IOS At 14,000 Feet' captures Illusion Of Safety at a point where the project was already moving beyond the boundaries of the underground industrial scene. Issued on cassette by We Never Sleep Records, the release reflects the late-eighties DIY cassette culture, when experimental artists relied on small independent labels and tape trading networks to circulate music that was often too adventurous for conventional record companies. The format suited the project's raw, exploratory nature perfectly, allowing unusual sound experiments to reach a dedicated international audience.

Illusion Of Safety began in 1983 as the brainchild of Daniel Burke, who has remained the project's central creative force while occasionally working with a rotating cast of collaborators. Rather than settling into a single genre, Burke has always embraced a broad palette of sounds, blending ambient textures, industrial noise, electro-acoustic composition, improvisation, sound collage and power electronics. His recordings frequently shift direction without warning, moving from delicate atmospheres to abrasive sonic assaults, creating music that challenges expectations while rewarding careful listening.

By the time 'More Altitude Than Attitude: IOS At 14,000 Feet' appeared, Illusion Of Safety had already developed a distinctive approach built around manipulated recordings, electronics, found sounds and unconventional sound sources. Burke's interest in balancing beauty with chaos gives the cassette an unpredictable character, where fractured ambience, harsh noise and subtle melodic fragments coexist in constantly evolving soundscapes. Even in its earliest recordings, the project displayed the fascination with perception, memory and psychological space that would become a defining feature of later releases.

We Never Sleep Records was one of many independent labels that helped sustain the experimental cassette underground during the 1980s. Operating outside the mainstream, the label specialized in adventurous and often difficult music, providing a home for artists working in industrial, experimental electronics and avant-garde sound. Releases like this one illustrate how important these small labels were in fostering a global network of listeners and musicians long before the internet made underground music so easily accessible.

Over the following decades, Illusion Of Safety continued to evolve while remaining remarkably prolific, releasing dozens of recordings through respected experimental labels and performing extensively across North America and Europe. Looking back, 'More Altitude Than Attitude: IOS At 14,000 Feet' stands as an early document of Daniel Burke's restless creative vision, preserving the fearless spirit that has kept Illusion Of Safety one of the most consistently inventive names in experimental electronic music.

Laibach / Last Few Days – Laibach / Last Few Days [Cass] (1983, Galerija ŠKUC Izdaja)

To many the band Last Few Days is just a complete mystery or simply some group who toured with Laibach and then promptly disappeared soon afterwards. This is not particularly surprising for a band that consciously left little mark during their existence. They were a band that deliberately avoided releasing their material and kept a limit on their live performances, they also had a very low profile though it was increased briefly after the Laibach collaborations. Most people attending their concerts had little very idea who they were, simply enticed along by the ambiguous posters or simply a night out. The concerts themselves bizarrely lasting all through the night (with a mixture of music and movies), still going at 7AM and not quite easiest sort music to be listening too either. They made heavy use of megaphones, guitars often played with broken bottles, drum unrelenting and brutal, delivering rather harsh and bewildering but occasionally rhythmic apocalyptic music. The three main members of Last Few Days were Daniel Landin (aka D. Styme), Si Joyce (aka Si Gross) and Keir Wahid (aka K. Warhead & and K. Fraser). They were regularly helped out by Fritz Haaman (aka Fritz Catlin) who also performed with Laibach during the joint tour, and occasionally by Sam Mills, both members of 23 Skidoo. Last Few Days returned as a pop outfit in 1990, with a core of Keir and Si.

Various – 2x6 The Dimensions Of A Coffin [LP] (1991, Cold Meat Industry)

A neat little concept this (two tracks contributed by six different groups, 2 × 6” = 12” being the vinyl format it is released on). ConSono contribute the first two tracks; “Satan’s Flute” a sombre dirge with slow dark beat and deep vocals, while “A Ritual” is almost medieval with Gregorian Chant backing meandering ‘plucked’ keyboards, huge bell sounds and deep vocals again that ends with a vocal imitation of a didgeridoo. Morthond continue the dark atmosphere with “Dwimordene", an almost chaotic, yet simplistic sampling piece, strangely musical although it seems to avoid anything other than rhythm. “The Path Of Death” is a lot less dense but still avoids conforming to strict ‘musical’ parameters. This is a soundtrack to dark and Gothic horror film; two classic works of noise. Archon Satani offer the next two; opening “Voices Of Insanity’, with a recorded judgement of 'a death by hanging’. Following neatly from the previous two tracks, not quite so dark and threatening, but no more musical. “Grief (Taste Of Death)” continues the pyre-smoke-blackened atmosphere Stygian Gothic.

Embrocation start side two with “Modus Vivendi”, the sound of swarming flies, the sound of corruption and decay. Deep, dark, threatening sound, with heavy drums beating a dirge and Death stalks the barren land. “Of Unknown Age” offers more of the same, black soundscapes with Death Drums relentless & somnolent. Mental Destruction contribute the next two; “Metamorphosis” which is a touch more accessible, noisy and Industrial as it is, white, almost viral mass of painful sound. “... And The Fire” starts off like some obscure Throbbing Gristle piece, then jumps towards Front 242, then repeats the sequence again, folding in and out of the pain-wracked primordial haze. Systema come up with the last two. “As We Go Astray” is an insane chaotic mess of noise and beat which defies the brain to sort it out, and perhaps the most ‘commercial’ track on the entire album, but if it ever entered the charts, it’d pollute and contaminate all those pretty flowers who seek refuge there from anything in any way ‘challenging’. “Let Me Come Inside You” closes the album with another distorted, Freak-Child of beat music, both mechanical and biological, and, perhaps closer to the truth, viral!

All in all this is an excellent album of black, bleak atmospheres. These bastard Sons of the early Industrial groups have written their own rules, and Sweden must be a cruel place to inspire the cold feelings in this album. [SOURCE: DISCOGS]

Jim O'Rourke – It Takes Time To Do Nothing [Cass] (1990, Audiofile Tapes)

Since emerging in the late '80s, composer, guitarist, producer, and all-around musical polymath Jim O'Rourke's wide-ranging output has found audiences with experimental jazz and noise fans, chill room denizens, indie rockers, and bedroom experimentalists, and bridged gaps between some otherwise isolated compositional communities. As a guitarist, he is recognized for his work with prepared guitar in improvisational settings, and also for playing with noise rock pioneers Sonic Youth, in Loose Fur with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and Glenn Kotche, and for David Grubbs' experimental rock group Gastr del Sol, just to name a few. He has also released over 30 solo albums, spanning singer / songwriter fare, adventurous post-rock, noise and tape experiments, ambient pieces, and pastoral instrumentals, with a knack for combining them into idiosyncratic art song. His 1989 solo debut, 'Some Kind of Pagan', experimented with prepared guitar and field recordings, while his 1997 Drag City label debut, 'Bad Timing', veered into more standard song forms. Some diverse highlights of his prolific career also include teaching the child actors the songs for Richard Linklater's film "School of Rock" (2003), winning a Grammy for producing Wilco's album 'A Ghost Is Born' (2004), and playing guitar and piano on Richard Thompson's score for the Werner Herzog documentary "Grizzly Man" (2005). Over 25 years into his recording career, he cracked the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart in 2015 with his solo LP 'Simple Songs'.

He first picked up the guitar at the age of six, but it wasn't until O'Rourke studied composition at DePaul University that his interest in the less-obvious possibilities of the instrument led him through the early catalogs of the post-classical and electro-acoustic traditions. While at DePaul, O'Rourke completed much of the work that would constitute his first few releases. He also had the opportunity to meet noted improvisational guitarist Derek Bailey, who invited O'Rourke to play at the British Improv Festival Company Week, leading to further collaborative projects with Bailey, Henry Kaiser, Eddie Prevost, and David Jackman. O'Rourke began working with Dan Burke's Illusion of Safety project in the early '90s, and released three albums through Staalplaat and Tesco before moving on to form experimental "rock" group Gastr del Sol with David Grubbs. Y Create – The Black Box [3xCass] (1984, Exart)

Y Create is the solo moniker of Hessel Veldman, but was also used to refer to a changing group of musicians connected to the Exart label, founded by Veldman and Nick Nicole in October 1982. A lot of their improvisations and compositions were recorded and several were released on the label. Apart from Veldman, musicians appearing on these sessions include Nick Nicole, Kees Beukelaar, Herman Te Loo, Jos van Ommen, Kees van Ede, Willem De Ridder, Jos Van Duijne, Peter Cornelissen and Gert-Jan Prins

'The Black Box' consists of three cassettes packed in a black box. No information on the cassette label or cover (completely black). Booklet in the box contains texts and collages but it is not clear whether these contain also the titles of the 6 sides.

Illusion Of Safety – In 70 Countries [Cass] (1989, Complacency)

Since 1983, Illusion Of Safety has been the ongoing project of Daniel Burke working alone and with various collaborators. They have released over 20 CDs on labels such as Complacency, Die Stadt, Experimedia, Odd Size, Silent, Soleilmoon, Staalplaat, Tesco, and Waystyx, and played over three hundred concerts in Europe and North America. IOS' work has been called ambient, post-industrial, electro-acoustic, noise, sound collage, improvisation, and power electronics, but they are unwilling to limit their work to any given style or method. The sonic character and affective substance of the music will often shift abruptly within each recording and live performance. Daniel Burke is currently working with conventional instruments, electronic synthesis, computer composition, samples, and highly amplified handled objects. He uses improvised and composed structures containing material that confounds memory and stimulates perception. The resulting music encompasses broken sound, disturbed ambience and unfiltered beauty that collectively evokes an awareness of the ineffable. The work activates modes of perception to facilitate direct access to the psyche, emotions, and the infinite in order to address the necessity of balance and the nature of dichotomy.

Greater Than One – Duty And Trust [Cass] (1991, ROIR)

Appropriately enough, the London industrial band Greater Than One was made up of two vocalists / keyboardists / programmers, Lee Newman and Michael Wells. Not as heavy as many industrial groups, and with perhaps more of a sense of humor, the duo debuted in the mid-'80s with a series of limited-edition and/or cassette-only releases, including 1987's 'All the Masters Licked Me'; their first widely distributed album was 1988's 'Dance of the Cowards'. This was in turn reissued by Wax Trax! in the U.S. in 1989 as 'London', a two-disc set featuring six extra tracks. 'G-Force' (1989) and the 'Index' EP (1991) followed before Greater Than One and Wax Trax! parted ways; the duo returned in 1992 with the cassette only release 'Duty and Trust' for ROIR, a fantastic album because it culls together some of the weirdest and most obscure tracks that Greater Than One ever produced. Very dark, moody, Gothic and industrial sounding stuff. Not at all beat oriented like most of their other material is. Perfect for late night listening. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC]

Lustmørd – Lustmørdekay (Live Evil) [Cass] (1982, Sterile Records)

Lustmord, the solo project of Welsh artist Brian Williams, is often credited as the creator of the post-industrial genre known as dark ambient. His bleak, disturbing music often utilizes field recordings, deep bass frequencies, and ritualistic instrumentation, such as Tibetan horns. Initially associated with the industrial scene during the early '80s, when he was a member of SPK, he established his signature sound with releases like 1986's 'Paradise Disowned' and 1990's particularly groundbreaking 'Heresy'.

This is an incredible document of early industrial music. It's a great mix of hypnotic tribal percussion, electronic experimentations, and mischievous vocal samples. All couched in a mist of early 80s tape hiss...or is that a leaking steam pipe in the warehouse basement studio? It's very successful at creating an evocative sonic experience. Reminds a bit of Gerechtigkeits Liga, and early Current 93. [SOURCE: DISCOGS]

Randy Greif – Bacteria And Gravity [LP] (1987, RRRecords)

Since the mid 1970's, Randy Greif has been pushing the boundaries of auditory arts, often incorporating electronic, computer and concrete music with spoken word, "sound theater", and field recordings. Location recordings in places such as Amazonia, New Guinea, and Thailand have found their way, often manipulated, into some of Greif's music, branding it as "tribal" electronics. Trademark styles are dense layers of atmospherics, cut-up vocals, and shifting minimal rhythms. "Dark" and "hallucinatory" are often used to describe the overall tone of his work.

Die Sonne Satan – Fac-Totum [Cass] (1993, Slaughter Productions)

Die Sonne Satan (real name Paolo Beltrame) is an Italian dark ambient project. The Latin title "Fac- Totum" invites us: "Do Everything". For a long time (A1-A6) sounds of anxiety and depression eat up insecure lonely souls with electronic knives, forks and spoons, repetitive chewing on a plate made of dark, drony and spacy ambient. That's hardly suitable for the next children birthday party. With section B1 the meal seams to be finished and slowly the after lunch grogginess is starting, supported by an adaptation of "Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgare" in sequence B2. And than, maybe for the dinner walk, under a black sun a short time the dance floor is opened, before in the end you are guest during an underwater birth of the next little black star. The recipe how to cook poor souls. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC

Werkbund – Skagerrak [LP] (1987, Walter Ulbricht Schallfolien)

Werkbund is an enigmatic industrial / experimental band from Hamburg, Germany. The sound deals mainly with marine tales and myths from Northern Germany. So far it is not known who the artists are. It has been guessed that Felix Kubin and Uli Rehberg and other artists from Hamburg might be involved. Some people pretend that both Werkbund and Mechthild Von Leusch involve the collaboration of Asmus Tietchens and Uli Rehberg, though Asmus Tietchens repeatedly and vehemently denied any participation in the band. Adolf Wölfli - Graeme Revell, Nurse With Wound And Déficit Des Années Antérieures – Necropolis, Amphibians & Reptiles (The Music Of Adolf Wölfli) [LP] (1986, Musique Brut)

Adolf Wölfli (February 29, 1864 – November 6, 1930) was a Swiss artist who was one of the first artists to be associated with the Art Brut or outsider art label. Wölfli's work has inspired many composers. Danish composer Per Nørgård, after viewing a Wölfli exhibition in 1979, embarked on a schizoid style lasting for several years; among the works of this time are an opera on the life of Wölfli called "The Divine Circus". The chamber opera "Wölfli Szenen" ("Wölfli Scenes"), which premiered in Graz, Austria, in 1981, featured music by Georg Friedrich Haas, the Austrian composer of spectral music, Gösta Neuwirth, Anton Prestele and Wolfgang Rihm. In 1978, "Adolf Wölfli: Gelesen Und Vertont", the first recording of Wölfli's work ever to be published, was released by the Adolf Wölfli Foundation, Museum of Fine Arts, Bern. Since that time, a number of German musicians have released adaptations of Wölfli's work.

In 1987, musician and composer Graeme Revell released an LP entitled 'Necropolis, Amphibians & Reptiles: The Music of Adolf Wolfli'. This was on his own Musique Brut label in London, UK in 1987. This audio compilation was based on the works of Wölfli and incorporated digital renditions of Wölfli's compositions, with additional sound effects and ambient soundscapes added to the songs, by Revell, based on the artwork surrounding Wölfli's musical notations. The LP was a collection of musical interpretations by Revell as well as DDAA and Nurse With Wound. This LP came with a booklet with a biography and images of Wolfli's works. Tracks 8 and 9 are combined into one track. [SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA

Die Form / Asmus Tietchens – Face To Face Vol. 1 [LP] (1988, Odd Size)

Die Form is the primary project of the French electronic musician and multimedia artist Philippe Fichot. He began his own record label, Bain Total, in 1977 and began recording a number of experimental cassette releases as Die Form, starting with 'Die Form 1' in 1977, with the first Die Form vinyl release ('Die Puppe') appearing in 1982. Whilst the project was still in its infancy, the underlying concepts were still evident -a combination of esoteric electronic experiments with an underlying theme of erotism, death and other 'taboo' subjects, apparent in both the music and the album artwork, which Philippe also produces.

Active since the mid-'60s, synthesizer experimentalist and musique concrète producer Asmus Tietchens has been a major influence on several generations of avant-garde electronic musicians and sound artists. Heavily inspired by Karlheinz Stockhausen, he has pursued "absolute music" through rigid formal exercises. His music is often harsh, alien, and abstract, but he's also recorded several albums of strangely playful material, including a handful of early-'80s Sky Records releases as well as later works as Hematic Sunsets. In addition to releasing over 100 recordings (including collaborations with Merzbow, Vidna Obmana, and Thomas Köner), Tietchens has taught acoustics at Hamburg universities since 1990, and he has written liner notes for dozens of albums released by the Bureau B label, particularly reissues of Cluster-related albums.

In this 'Face To Face Vol. 1' Die Form's piece is an erratic, yet nicely structured piece of experimental electronic. Tietchens offers up a reliably industrial, ambient piece worthy of his better output. The album was released in 1988 in Odd Size, a French label specialising in experimental and industrial music, run by Laurent Perrier from his Paris Record shop from 1987 to 1997. Trigger B – The Great Walk [Cass] (1985, DTW)

Trigger B is a project of Duisburg-based Thomas Bosselmann. The basis of his sound is typical austere minimal synth of the time (early 1980's). However, he uses voice only sporadically, mostly in the form of unintelligible rants and wailings. In spite of the irritating voice, his atmospheric pieces are nice stuff, based on cosmic analog synths and even classical influences. [SOURCE: ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC]

Negative Reaction ‎– Negative Reaction [LP] (1981, Dogfood Production System)

Negative Reaction were an obscure Australian group formed by Michael "Mick" Kingham, Milan Stojanovic, and Jim Bodnar in 1978. They released a cassette on the legendary Australian industrial and home-taping label Terse and eventually also released a self-titled LP in 1981. The album ranks amongst the most captivating and gripping albums from the Australian experimental post-punk time and contains good dark poetical lyrics. The music reflects the times in which the industrial and DIY-culture played an important role in the Australian music underground. [SOURCE: YOUTUBE

Nurse With Wound ‎– Alas The Madonna Does Not Function [12''] (1988, United Dairies)

This mini-LP offers a shorter Nurse With Wound track on the 45 rpm Side A and a much longer one on the 33 rpm side B. The first track, "Nil By Mouth," begins with noisy bursts of percussion interspersed with much quieter interludes with creaking guitars and other noises. The piece builds with intensity until a much heavier guitar finally rips loose and the pounding percussion becomes continuous, as deconstructed rock music becomes reconstructed again into one of N.W.W.'s more charged and energetic moments. The 20-minute piece on the flip side, "Swansong," is far subtler. It begins with quiet washes of white-noise static that rise and fall like ocean waves, very smooth and gentle at first but gradually becoming more forceful and complex. Soon a flute works its way into the mix, while the washes of white noise become choppier. About two-thirds of the way into the piece the waves stop abruptly and after a brief section where the flute's tone rises, a small child's voice intones a short, weird poem while a woman chants in the background, followed very quickly by a jarring wall of very harsh, aggressive static that slowly dies into a rumble to conclude the piece. "Swansong" is one of Nurse With Wound's more challenging works, but also one of the most effective. These two tracks have since been separated on CDs, with "Nil By Mouth" appearing on the 'Sugar Fish Drink' collection, whereas "Swansong" is one of the three tracks on the CD 'A Missing Sense'. Robert Rich ‎– Inner Landscapes [CD] (1999, Hypnos, Soundscape)

The 74 minutes of music on Robert Rich's 'Inner Landscapes' were culled and cut from over two hours of live concert material. The work that became 'Inner Landscapes' was taken from a live and wholly improvised set performed in 1985. This recording is full and diverse with its synth drones, flute sounds, and Rich's lap steel. It is a fine recording of recycled music, and one that is both complimentary and insightful. This is a must-have recording for fans of Robert Rich and any fan of early new age/space music circa the mid-'80s. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC
