Of Cabbages And Kings ‎– Face [LP] (1988, Purge/Sound League, Southern Studios)

Evolved from Chicago/New York band The Bag People and containing members of the Swans and Glenn Branca collaborators, Of Cabbages & Kings was a sporadically seen and short-lived band centered on Carolyn Master and Algis Kizys. Given that most members had full-time gigs with other, more prominent bands (Swans, Foetus, Prong), Of Cabbages & Kings was limited to a handful of releases from 1987 to 1992. Over the years, the band included such members as Ted Parsons of Prong, Live Skull drummer Rich Hutchins, and Diane Wlezien. Guitarist Master and bassist Kizys made up the foundation of the group, being the only constants in an ever-changing lineup. The band's sound, not dissimilar to the aforementioned collaborators, was eclectic, moving from sharp dissonance to moody darkness. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC

Nautilus Pompilius ‎– Князь Тишины = The Prince Of Silence [CD] (1994, Moroz Records)

Sverdlovsk-Leningrad hybrid Nautilus Pompilius became legendary for its abrupt ascension to celebrity at the end of the 1980s, making a name for Sverdlovsk (now Ekaterinburg) as the third capitol of Soviet rock. Its sound originated in the Ural Mountains but found a home among innovative Leningrad groups like Akvarium and Kino. Charismatic frontman Vycheslav Butusov and songwriter Ilya Kormiltsev were the two constant members of Nautilus. Other musicians, mostly fellow disciples of the Sverdlovsk scene, came and went throughout the group's almost 20-year history. In 1989, at the pinnacle of their fame, 'Knyaz' Tishyinyi' ("Prince of Silence") was a bona fide hit. The group took its charisma onto the silver screen, appearing in two films by Ural director Andrei Balabanov, "Ranshe Bylo Sovsem Drugoe Vremya" ("Before Was a Different Time") and "U Menya Net Druga" ("I Don't Have a Friend"), and a Finnish documentary about Soviet rock, "The Sickle and the Guitar". Mighty Sphincter ‎– House Of No Return [7''] (1993, Ghoul Agency Inc.)

Mighty Sphincter are one of the most under-appreciated bands to come out of the Phoenix sands. Formed in 1981 by Greg Hynes (Teds) and Doug Clark (The Brainz), they’d release a handful of records, none of which would sound like the one that came before it, but all of which were quite good. The band’s releases all have the distinction of practically having no to singers the same. Guitarist/songwriter Doug Clark would take over the vocal duties and also sing on most of their first “real” full-length titled 'The New Manson Family'. It was Sphincter most angry sounding album but it con a few real gems. This would also mark the end of the sheer demented sound of the band as they were evolving into a more serious act by this point. [SOURCE: THE PUNK VAULT

The Loop Orchestra ‎– Suspense [LP] (1990, Endless Recordings)

The genesis of The Loop Orchestra occurred in the ashes of a simple two-tape-machine-no-man-band, The Nobodies, which died in a fire in 1980. From those ashes, and with a pastiche taken from the likes of Terse Tapes, home of seminal Australian Industrial outfit Severed Heads, an ashen poultice was formed to take up further and more involved household heretical experimentation, this time with reel-to-reel tape machines. This idea was subsequently expanded upon in the studio of Sydney radio station 2MBS-fm amid a group of experimental radio programmers. Two, John Blades and Richard Fielding, were using the studio equipment as an instrument, experimenting with tape machines through processes involving cutting, dissecting, rearranging and rejoining prerecorded tape, creating tape loops and playing them back. They felt a need to formalize their studio experimentation and so conceived the idea of creating a full blown machine orchestra. The intention of the Orchestra was for groups of instruments of an orthodox orchestra to be represented by reel-to-reel tape machines playing loops of the instruments' sounds. In 1983 an ensemble comprising 4 reel-to-reel machines playing slowly evolving tape-loop constructions, made its live debut playing a live-to-air performance in the studio of Sydney radio station 2MBS-fm in 1983, as The Loop Orchestra. In 1990 The Loop Orchestra released its first LP, 'Suspense'. [SOURCE: FORCED EXPOSURE

King Snake Roost ‎– From Barbarism To Christian Manhood [LP] (1987, Aberrant Records)

King Snake Roost were one of a number of guitar-based bands who emerged from within the punk rock and post-punk scene of the mid-1980s that came to be defined as noise rock. King Snake Roost formed in 1985 in Adelaide and in 1987 the band moved to Sydney. The band broke up in 1990 after a two-month tour of the USA. In Australia and the USA the band played with some of the most influential noise rock bands of the 1980s, including Sonic Youth, Big Black, Mudhoney, Helmet, Babes In Toyland, Lubricated Goat, feedtime and The Mark of Cain. King Snake Roost played at some prestigious 1980s US venues, including, CBGB and Maxwell's. 'From Barbarism to Christian Manhood' is their debut album, released in 1987 by Aberrant Records. In 1989, the album was adopted by Amphetamine Reptile Records and re-issued on vinyl. [SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA

Jo Callis / S.H.A.K.E. Project ‎– Woah Yeah! [7''] (1981, Pop Aural)

Three members of the recently defunct Rezillos (Jo Callis, Simon Templar, Angel Paterson) stayed on Sire and carried on as Shake (or S.H.A.K.E.), releasing an unrecorded Rezillos tune "Culture Shock" as the main song on their debut 10" EP, a four song affair that nobody really bothered with. Two songs from the EP, "Culture Shock" and "Dream On" were extracted for a single which did nothing either. Troy Tate (ex-Index) joined after the first single and prior to the band's Peel Session in April. It was some time before the band's next outing, and 'Invasion Of The Gamma Men' met with the same lack of interest that befell the debut EP. After this Tate joined The Teardrop Explodes and Callis joined The Human League. And then, in 1981, 'Woah Yeah!' came out, credited to Jo Callis on the front cover and Jo Callis S.H.A.K.E. Project on the labels -it was presumably recorded in 1980 as it featured the same lineup as the 'Gamma Men' single. [SOURCE: PUNKY GIBBON

Inertia – Dancebeat Attitude (Pop Anguish En Route) [7''] (1980, Inertia Records)

Inertia was a Douglas Benford project. This is the sound of alienated youth, sick of the rock trip, finding their way in a new world of endless possibilities. Their best work was to come, but this is a charming moment in the birth pangs of minimal electronic pop, played by fingers not computers. Incredibly stripped down minimal synth that somehow captures your attention. Highly recommended for the 80's minimal synth collectors. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC

De Haters ‎– De Haters [Cass] (1986, BloedvlagProdukt)

The Haters are a noise music and conceptual art troupe from the United States. Founded in 1979, they are one of the earliest acts in the modern noise scene. The group is primarily the work of the Hollywood, California-based musician, artist, writer, and filmmaker GX Jupitter-Larsen, accompanied by a constantly changing lineup of other "members", usually local experimental musicians and artists in whatever town a Haters performance happens to take place. GX have been making "destroyed music" for many a moon, so he must be on to something interesting. Sound loops galore that sound like a foundation to a bigger work. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC

Gone Fishin' - Matt Piucci & Tim Lee ‎– Can't Get Lost When You're Goin' Nowhere [LP] (1986, Restless Records)

This album is a collaborative effort by Rain Parade's Matt Piucci and Tim Lee of The Windbreakers, and it's a decidedly mixed endeavor. While the sound quality is good and some of the songs are decent, the album also has its share of less effective tunes, pedestrian solo break sections, and at times joltingly sloppy ensemble playing. Highlights include "Touch the Gold," twith its rasping bluesy singing and spare arrangement featuring twangy slide guitar and clipped organ; "Lift It Up," with its almost shouted vocal, fuzz rock guitar, and chorus-only vintage-garage-band-sounding keyboards and drums; and two acoustic singer-songwriter style numbers, "Take a Left" and "Too Many Eyes," the latter exhibiting an especially yearning, if squarish, melodiousness. R.E.M.'s musical influence on this album is never too far from the surface and is especially noticeable on the ringing guitar track "Charlie Jones." This is a respectable, if not essential, recording. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC

Frantic Elevators ‎– Holding Back The Years [7''] (1982, No Waiting)

Frantic Elevators were a punk band best known for being the jumping-off point for a pre-Simply Red Mick Hucknall. Formed in 1976 after the band met each other at a Sex Pistols gig, the group consisted of vocalist Mick Hucknall, drummer Kevin Williams, guitarist Neil Smith, and bassist Brian Turner. Their final single was 1982's 'Holding Back the Years'. Just less than four years later, Hucknall re-recorded the song with Simply Red, and it became an international smash. Emerald Vein ‎– Existence [LP] (1988, Sub Rosa)

Emerald Vein is a completely unique sound that is difficult to compare with anyone. With elements from both progressive rock and the avante-garde scene, the band almost defies genres. At times minimalistic and at times dense, Emerald Vein has a sound which you will immediately love and never forget.

Before Emerald Vein, band founder Bob Young was in the band Uzi which opened for groups like Sonic Youth. After that Young formed a band with the bass player and another singer called A Scanner Darkly which signed to Sub Rosa Records in Belgium. The group did one LP called 'This Is the Way'. Shortly after that Bob Young was born again and quit the band. He began Emerald Vein as a recording project and did all the instruments and sequences. There were a few people playing different things like Terry Donahue on drums and Mimi Thiel on vocals. Emerald Vein released two albums on the Sub Rosa label from Belgium. They received limited exposure in America as Sub Rosa concentrated on European distribution.  [SOURCE: LAST.FM]

Depósito Dental ‎– Depósito Dental [LP] (1986, Grabaciones Accidentales)

Depósito Dental were a duo from Madrid formed in 1983 by Rosa Galindo (vocals) and Pedro Garhel (keyboards). With a musical concept that moved between experimental dark sounds where the synthesizer electronics predominated, they were essentially characterized by a vision of what they intended to offer with their music as a global multimedia show in which they also had videos, literary texts, slides, stage recreation, etc. It includes all the sound that emerges in all their plastic experience, expressing the emotions and personal experiences, ignoring their story. They use the voice as an instrument that becomes their own language. They create sounds that go far beyond words. They analyze conceptually the origin-influence that the evolution of music has had on them. Their "Performances Música" stand out for the creation of a live atmosphere. In their performances they merge different media, the installation, or intervention in a given space, the use of video as an intrinsic relationship between recording and action, body presence, movement or dance. A whole atmosphere or climate that enhances sound sensations, complementing and offering the total work. They recorded an only album in 1986 for Grabaciones Accidentales with the same title.
