People In Control ‎– When It's War [7''] (1981, Crammed Discs)

It's very lo-fi, but it has a fabulous groove to the EP. It certainly has that sort of absurdly orchestrated yet function feel of Family Fodder. It has the male and female vocalist interchanges and that sort of dub influenced post-punk vibe and tribal style drumming as well. Charles Bullen from This Heat was involved in this project as well which explains the slightly more experimental touches this has. "When It's War" is sort of haunting. "Failing To Achieve" is also a good track, but perhaps not quite as memorable as the title track. Their finishing move, "Pale Fail" echoes "When It's War" only it's mainly instrumental, not really a song actually. All in all though what little material exists from this group is pretty wicked, and if you are a fan of either Heat or Fodder then this should be an absolute must. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC

Nasmak ‎– Duel [LP] (1983, Plurex Records, Boudisque)

By 1983, the new-wave era was practically over, yet some bands persisted with the ideal, like the Netherlands' Nasmak. 'Duel' contained industrial cold-funk with lite oriental touches ("Plaster", "Me Rex") that recalled the Talking Heads, as well as the neo-ethnic of Japan. The most striking moment from the first-side was "Matter", based on an evolving electronic loop, minimal drums / bass accompaniment and anthemic vocals. The result was once again reminiscent of the Talking Heads (echoes of "Once In A Lifetime").

The second side started unassumingly with the robotic-funk of "Duel With Unequal Arms", but soon things got more ambitious with the tormented minimal electro-ethnic "Sunk In Sight Of The Harbour" and the minor coldwave classic "Pride Of Soul". Again, the most striking comes at the end with "Mutual Repulsion", that arranges the instruments in such a way so that it juxtaposes them to present a riddle of an alien environment. Look de Bouk ‎– Lacrimae Rerum [LP] (1985, Ayaa)

Look De Bouk formed out of the ashes of renowned French RIO act Hellebore headed by Denis Tagu. In 1985 Look De Bouk released their first album entitled 'Lacrimae Rerum' on the AYAA label. Trending different avenues to their predecessors Look De Bouk embraces a playful almost childish outlook to the sound they craft sounding like a cunning mix between 80's Residents, Pascal Comelade (thanks to their usage of toys), Aksak Maboul's first and ZNR. The combination results in an overly enjoyable experience (undeniably French) putting an affable face on these weird but charming RIO-esque experimentations. [SOURCE: PROG ARCHIVES

King Of The Slums ‎– Barbarous English Fayre [LP] (1990, Midnight Music)

King of the Slums formed in Manchester, England, by writer Charley Keigher aka Charlie Keighera (vocals, guitar) and Sarah Curtis (electric violin), initially as Slum Cathedral User.  Joined by bassist John Eccles in early 1985, they recorded a demo tape at Crimson Studios in Urmston, Manchester with the help of a drummer who left the band soon after. The band took up its image of Kings of the slums incorporating a plastic dustbin and a tambourine replacing the drums which added to their 'Slums' authenticity when playing live. They won Muze magazine's Band of the Year competition winning a recording session at a studio in Gorton. Manchester, producing a second demo tape. Their third demo tape came soon after at a recording studio in Uppermill high up in the Saddleworth Moor.

During the second and third demo tape recordings the group made its vinyl recording debut with the "Spider Psychiatry" single in 1986 on a small independent label SLR Records. During this time they gigged at various Manchester venues as a three piece with their now trademark dustbin drum and homemade stage. The single, reviewed by Melody Maker, never made any significant sales. In mid 1987 Eccles left the band. Sarah Curtis had studied violin at the Royal Northern College of Music, but dropped out before finishing her studies. Further releases followed in 1988 and 1989 on the Play Hard label, now with bassist Jon Chandler and drummer Ged O'Brien (who replaced a succession of drummers), most of which were collected on the album 'Barbarous English Fayre' (1989). Jesse Garon & The Desperadoes ‎– Splashing Along [7''] (1986, Narodnik)

This Edinburgh-based act emerged in 1986. Initially viewed as an informal venture -its founding line-up was largely drawn from members of another group, Rote Kopelle- The Desperadoes nonetheless established themselves as the leading exponents of the city’s ‘shambling’ scene, alongside the more fêted Shop Assistants. Fran Schoppler (vocals) Andrew Tully (guitar/vocals), Angus McPake (bass) and Marquerita Vazquez Ponte (drums) provided the core of a unit that made its debut with the melodic ‘Splashing Along’, a single sympathetically produced by ex-Jesus And Mary Chain bass player Douglas Hart. Hash Jar Tempo ‎– Under Glass [CD] (1999, Drunken Fish Records)

This second collaboration between Roy Montgomery and Bardo Pond unveiled a series of colossal jams, ranging from the simmering drone-raga "Präludium und Fuge. D-Moll" (that coils and hisses like a gigantic serpent), to the toxic nebulae of "Labiomancy", the thick magma of "Sources in Cleveland", the eastern psychedelic carousel "Hymenoptera in Amber Crybaby", and above all the "fried" 17-minute cosmic-psychedelia of "Atropine" (whose second half gives way to a surprisingly tender melody). Make no mistake, the relentless heavy tripping of 'Under Glass' is not for the faint of heart, it may just as easily thrill you as it may exhaust you. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC

God Bullies ‎– Plastic Eye Miracle [LP] (1990, Amphetamine Reptile Records, Mad Queen Records)

They cover such songs as Link Wray’s “Preacher Man” and Terry Jacks’ “Which Way You Goin’ Billy.” Every other word out of their mouths has to do with god in some shape or form. There are enough sermons embedded between the notes to stock a religious radio station. One song even begins with a sweet little girl singing a hymn. But make no mistake about it: gospel this ain’t. The God Bullies are everything Sister Mary Elizabeth warned you about. Formed in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the God Bullies debuted in 1988 with the single “All I Want Is My Mamma” and followed that with the cassette-only half-live/half-studio 'Plastic Eye Miracle' (later vinylized in Germany). As the voice of the beast, Mike Hard has learned his lessons well from The Sisters of Mercy: a slow, deep growl interspersed with a glazed-eyed psycho laugh so gleeful and ghoulish that you wonder if it’s an act or just the Halidol wearing off.  [SOURCE: TROUSER PRESS

François Bayle ‎– Erosphère [LP] (1982, INA-GRM)

“Concrete art” means a representation formed of synthetic intuitions of real things, built through the order and connection that the human intellect abstracts from reality. This album reaches perfectly this vision, proposing, in a "concrete" key, a dark image, mechanized at all, of a normal day in the industrialized city through the eyes of a workman, whose decline shines in every vision. This representation of human life’s mechanization is built, as you can listen from the first time, by descriptions (the titles are helpful) made through the movement and the stasis of the workman (look at the titles of every movements for a complete comprehension of this pass; i.e. “climat”, “transit”, “paysage”, etc.), formed by three mains intuitions that perfectly work (sight to the ground, sight to the sky, and the parallel inside sight and outside sight), for the representation of this demise and emptying of the natural being of man. Metallic sounds are everywhere, and all is enmeshed in a sort of ghostly movement in which the mind of man is totally passive and vacant. The name "Erosphère" represents the object of this mechanization, it is ambivalent, because it could be a term that represents the affective sphere of man, or a variation of atmosphere; both the interpretations are meaningful, because this industrial decadence seems to be In the man and Out of him at the same time. All tends to a particular anguish, to a limbic sight of everything: out of the factory noise ("La Fin Du Bruit") there’s the noise and the acrid placidity of eros, of love ("Eros Bleu" and "Eros Noir") in which the man is totally inert and apathic, and, in the end, the meaninglessness of the sky overflown by birds and his hollow movements ("Toupie Dans Le Ciel"). A great “anthropological” masterwork, no other words. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC

The Embarrassment ‎– Death Travels West [LP] (1983, Fresh Sounds Inc)

This utterly forgotten mini-album by The Embarrassment was a worthwhile addition to the post-punk circus. "Careen" delivered a highly neurotic and danceable cowpunk, as if a mixture of Polyrock and Certain General. "Viewmaster" was more toned down country-punk, but the magnified power-pop of "Drive Me To The Park" more than made up for it. "Lewis & Clark" further upped the anxiety levels, echoed by the maniacal guitar in "D-Rings", and the bouncing around of "Hip And Well Read". [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC

The Dentists ‎– Naked [10''] (1991, Independent Project Records)

Although The Dentists were arguably the first Brit-pop band, they never were able to capitalize when the style they'd perfected over the course of a decade suddenly became the Next Big Thing around 1994. Their signature sound, a combination of Mick Murphy's veddy British voice and Bob Collins' hyperactively jangly guitar, has been duplicated many times over, but it's never quite been equaled. The Dentists formed in their native Chatham, a small town in rural Kent, in 1983; the original lineup comprised Murphy, Collins, bassist Mark Matthews, and drummer Ian Smith. Oddly, for a band that had been so productive in the early years of their career, The Dentists all but disappeared for over two years, landed exclusive tracks on a number of compilations and finally began an attempt to introduce themselves to the American market, which they had so far ignored. The 10" EP, 'Naked', compiled seven rarities from 1986 and 1987, most of them previously unreleased. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC]
