Collective Horizontal formed in London by Adrian "Ada" Taylor (vocals), Igor [Simon Pearce/Paris] (keyboards, also in Take It and Blue Screaming), Keith Whitehorn (guitar) and Nag [Stephen Lee] (bass). This is their only record, a wonderfully strange and unique thing. It's like a cross between art school UK post-punk, early Pink Floyd, and a small band of beachcombers who stumbled upon an old waterlogged accordian on the shore, picked it up to discover it still worked, and started making up songs on the spot. UJ3RK5 – UJ3RK5 [12''] (1980, Quintessence Records)

UJ3RK5 (pronounced "you jerk," -the five is silent) was a Vancouver-based band from the late 1970s. Their style was post punk/new wave, but was more art rock than synth pop. UJ3RK5's short-lived local success was influenced by the music industry's infatuation with Martha and the Muffins-styled male-female bands. The band included local artist celebrities Ian Wallace, Jeff Wall and Rodney Graham, as well as Kitty Byrne, Colin Griffiths, Danice McLeod, Frank Ramirez and CBC Radio host David Wisdom. Their eponymous debut album, portraying the pioneers of Vancouver's school of so-called 'photoconceptualism' or 'post-conceptual photography' in a rare moment of unison, sported an unlikely hit single titled "Eisenhower and the Hippies" -a song inspired by a work of American conceptual art proponent Dan Graham. The band was a rather short-lived affair, allowing the members to concentrate on their art careers instead.

The Nose Flutes – Girth [12''] (1985, Reflex Records)

 

The Noseflutes were an unorthodox, late-eighties band based in Birmingham. They released three EPs and three albums, recorded four sessions for Radio 1's John Peel, and received generally favourable reviews from the contemporary music press. During their existence they became "the house band for Birmingham". The band was formed in 1980 and both the band and the members went through several names before settling on The Noseflutes (previous names include The Blaggards, The Cream Dervishes, Extroverts in a Vacuum, The Viable Sloths, Pantaloni Brothers, and Shitstormer). The band's first releases were on Reflex Records, home to The Very Things and And Also the Trees. Reflex issued the band's first EP, 'Girth', in 1985. Wow Federation – Yellow Telephone [7''] (1981, Rococco Records)

Post-punk band formed in Oxford in 1978. The line up in 1980 was: Nick Horton (drums), Mark 'Mozart' Hughes aka Millree Hughes (guitar), Vicky Richardson (sax), James Rogers (organ), Andy Sizer (bass), Brian Warner (guitar) and Ian Royce Warner (vocals). Members prior to this include: Andy Mason (drums), Bill Buchanan (drums) and Carl (synth). Bill and Carl went on to be involved in the group Dum Dum Dum. Ian, Brian and Nick all used to play with the Dag Dag Bombers.

Quick Culture – Quick Culture [12''] (1982, 46 Records, Paradoxx Records)

 

Really nice obscure new wave from Germany. Funky, relaxed minimal synth with minimalistic, dadaistic female and male vocals (mixing German, English and French lyrics) and some avantgardistic elements -edgy and weird, but still retaining a nice pop feel, just like it should be. It's even quite danceable -"Quick Culture 1" sounds quite like proto-house. And the caribbean and dubby elements on "Bahama-Kosaken" are also nice. But all in all, every song is very listenable, original and entertaining. Original, sympathetic, and recommended to anyone who likes music between experimental and pop. Bound & Gagged – Untitled [12''] (1980, Modern Method Records)

 

Boston's Bound & Gagged were surely a hit with the polka dot and pointy shoe set. Formed in 1978 by Barbara Britto (vocals), Trude Koby (bass, saxophone), Marcia Maglione (keyboards, percussion), Deni Ozan (drums), Wendy Stone (guitar, bass) and Martha Swetzoff (guitar, bass, vocals), their ennui-tinged female vocals, Beefheart-influenced art rock instrumentation and herky jerky rhythm's ala Flying Lizards will surely satisfy those with a soft spot for this period. This 12" is a very quirky catchy discombobulated punky no wave girl extravaganza. They have really interesting rhythms and often their songs have many different unusual parts, and layers but it works. The vocals are rather coy and sarcastic and strange. It's pretty depressing to think that this is the band's entire catalog and that they never really did achieve success because this is some intriguing stuff. Model Citizens – Shift The Blame [7''] (1979, Spy Records Ltd.)

 

Largely unknown New York new wave group that spun off some important bands when they split into The Dance and Polyrock, and a side project of The Dance backing 12 year old Chandra. John Cale produced the 'Shift The Blame' EP after he lost out on the chance to produce Television to Brian Eno. Model Citizens and its offshoots reflect an awareness of NY's minimalists -Cale played with La Monte Young's early Dream Syndicate, and Philip Glass went on to produce Polyrock. One of the highlights of the band is Eugenie Diserio's voice. There's a repetitive keyboard groove to these bands that hints at Glass and a slight dissonance but danceable groove that makes them sound fresh over 40 years later.

Equal Local – 12 Ways To Go [12''] (1982, Powderworks, Missing Link)

 

Equal Local was a post-punk instrumental ensemble, drawing on jazz and electronic influences, formed by Dean Richards (electric guitar) and Philip Jackson (synthesizer, drum programming) after their departure from Whirlywirld in 1979. Other members of the band were Bryce Perrin (acoustic bass -and later in Hot Half Hour), Ian Cox (sax, and later in band such → ↑ →, Essendon Airport, Hot Half Hour and one of the original members of I'm Talking), Mick Hauser (sax, also in Hot Half Hour) and  Melissa Webb (synthesizer, piano, and later in David Chesworth Ensemble). The record was produced by Chris Wyatt and Equal Local. They released this 12'', the cassette 'How Did We Miss These?' in 1982 in the Rash (Decisions) label, and the 'Madagascar' 12" EP in the Missing Link label in 1981.

V-Effect – Stop Those Songs [LP] (1983, Rift)

 

This forgotten album from 1983 started with "Master/Slave", a vibrant and delightful art-punk-funk-jazz exercise that had one foot in the work of the Art Bears, and the other in the work of Captain Beefheart, and without forgetting no-wavers such as Blurt. Ditto for the minimal spastic discordance of "Feet First", which also maintained a degree of elegance. Then, the rhythmic chaos of "New Condition" veered even more into no-wave, into the kind of perverse groove that Teenage Jesus & The Jerks or DNA manage to get across. In the meantime, tracks such as "Pollyanna" and "Mysteries Of The Organism" returned to a kind of disjointed but measured elegance, whereas the amateurish sabotage of "Placebo #1" and "Fast-Acting Placebo" revisited the spirit of early Half Japanese. Side two followed along these lines, with highlights such as "Boyce Life" and "They Can't Get It" approaching an ever more severe sound. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC]

Gotta love the cute lyrics in The Work's "I Hate America". Tim Hodgkinson was and is a very serious man with strong convictions and an activist personality. The only problem with English people complaining (or whining as it is in most cases) about America is that the two countries are equally despicable in most of the same ways. The music is raw and almost awesome on this three song platter, one of the first statements by this important avant-rock group led by the freshly de-bovinated Hodgkinson. Look de Bouk ‎– Lacrimae Rerum [LP] (1985, Ayaa)

Look De Bouk formed out of the ashes of renowned French RIO act Hellebore headed by Denis Tagu. In 1985 Look De Bouk released their first album entitled 'Lacrimae Rerum' on the AYAA label. Trending different avenues to their predecessors Look De Bouk embraces a playful almost childish outlook to the sound they craft sounding like a cunning mix between 80's Residents, Pascal Comelade (thanks to their usage of toys), Aksak Maboul's first and ZNR. The Lo Yo Yo ‎– Extra Weapons [LP] (1985, Floppy Discs)

 

British band The Lo Yo Yo was founded by Family Fodder frontman John Pearce, aka Alig, in 1984. The Lo Yo Yo was active for 2 years and released one cassette, one split cassette with Look De Bouk, one full-length LP and appeared on the 'Local International 15-26' compilation cassette on Recommended. The band’s name comes from a Captain Beefheart song titled "Low Yo Yo Stuff" on the 1972 'Clear Spot' LP. The Lo Yo Yo’s line-up was actually more varied and included, along 10 or so other musicians, various Family Fodder members like Mick Hobbs, Felix Fiedorowicz and Rick Wilson. All three also played in The Work and Officer!, sometimes with Pearce himself. Charles Bullen of This Heat occasionally played drums with Family Fodder and co-produced The Lo Yo Yo’s unique LP, 'Extra Weapons', in 1985. Some songs on here are so dope and perfect for a mixed Dj set -especially "Learning to Fly" which is like Letta Mbulu meets Tom Tom Club. Great 80's material here with a lot of the sound trends going on at that time here. Funky, World/African, art band weirdness, post punk attitudes, instrument and electronic experimentalism. Unrest Work & Play ‎– Sound Every Day [12''] (1983, Political Underground Records)

For its brief running time, 'Sound Every Day' is a rewarding and complex run through the fertile grounds of the Recommended Records' school of Experimental/Post-Progressive music. Unrest Work & Play are obvious acolytes of Faust and This Heat, which is evident in the fuzz-drenched guitars and marimba-backed rhythms of "Change" and the deep, bizarre, English Folk-style choral vocals throughout. Laughing Clowns ‎– Everything That Flies... [12''] (1983, Prince Melon Records)

Ed Kuepper's Laughing Clowns were a bit more off the beaten path than The Saints, the infamous Australian punk band Kuepper played guitar for during the '70s. Integrating jazz influences into their unique take on post-punk, the Laughing Clowns released several records between 1980 and 1985, before Kuepper began his solo career. In 1982 the group relocated to London and underwent some major lineup shuffling. After breaking up, Kuepper flew solo and also formed The Aints. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC]

Officer! ‎- Yes Yes No No Yes No Yes [LP] (1988, Not On Label)

Officer! is the brainchild of Londoner Mick Hobbs. His musical roots are in the fecund RIO scene of the late ’70s and early 1980s, initially as guitarist in The Work (alongside Bill Gilonis, Rick Wilson and Henry Cow’s Tim Hodgkinson), and subsequent related groupings The Lowest Note, The Lo Yo Yo, and The Momes. Over the course of the decade he became closely associated with This Heat and their Cold Storage studio in Brixton, working with the likes of Flaming Tunes, Family Fodder, Catherine Jauniaux and Zeena Parkins, to name but a few. 

The Officer! project formally surfaced in 1982 with a cassette tape entitled 'Eight New Songs By Mick Hobbs'. It marked the blossoming of a singular writer and improvisor, with a gift for plangent melody, ingenious arrangement and lyrics at once caustic and courtly, playful and profound. The Cold Storage-recorded 'Ossification' LP arrived a year later, followed by 'Cough' (1985) and 'Yes Yes No No Yes No Yes' (1988). [SOURCE: BLACKEST EVER BLACK]
