The Fluid ‎– Clear Black Paper [LP] (1988, Sub Pop)

It should be pointed out that it was Denver outfit The Fluid that seemed to fire the first shot in the stakes which would later be deemed grunge rock not Seattle (although it came via Sub Pop). Previously there existed a taboo in the underground not to mix 70’s riffs with 80’s hardcore, yet as the 80’s progressed Black Flag seemed to almost lobby to have their name Flag changed Sabbath. The Fluid showed that punk could progress only so far before you had to seek outside influences. Tracks such as "Cold Outside", "It’s My Time", "Left Unsaid" and "Try Try Try" were powering and indicated that The Fluid were an act with enormous potential. Later efforts such as ‘Glue’ and ‘Roadmouth’ gleamed acclaim for The Fluid’s yet their golden moment clearly remained ‘Clear Black Paper’. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC

Experimental Products ‎– Experiment! [12''] (1987, Connection)

Experimental Products were a synth duo from Philadelphia / Northern Delaware. Members Mark Wilde and Michael Gross produced 8-track gear recordings, then had their music pressed to vinyl. In 1984 they released the 3 song 12" EP 'Glowing in the Dark'. "Glowing In The Dark" proved irresistible to DJs and became a 1985 dance club chart breakthrough. Today, many DJs and collectors consider it a "classic" synth record. Two years before 'Glowing In The Dark' they released a 10 song vinyl LP titled 'Prototype', that remained an obscure record until minimal synth collectors caught wind of it in the late 90s. Delta 5 ‎– See The Whirl'.. [LP] (1981, PRE Records)

Something definitely did go wrong here, the greetings of the saxophone on "Innocenti" lead to the problem right away. The production is glossy and cheesy which doesn't work well with cool post-punk music. You can still pull out moments of greatness from these recordings, their roundhouse (call / answer) style of clever vocals are still amusing. Musically they are no slouches either with unusually timed drumming that leads to a funkier edge and of course some cool bass work and jagged guitar lines. This is Delta 5's one and only full album sadly and poor sales broke the band up. Their biggest hit "Mind Your Own Business" isn't even on here, but "Anticipation", "Trail", "Telephone" and "Waiting" are and they are wonderful (even in worse versions). It's too bad that such a fantastic band had such poor treatment, that is probably the only reason they weren't more popular at the time because everything else lines up brilliantly. Certain General ‎– Holiday Of Love [12''] (1982, Labor)

Certain General is an American post-punk band formed in 1980 by Parker Dulany, Phil Gammage, Marcy Saddy, and Russell Berke. By 1981 and 1982 the band was performing in East Coast venues and colleges from Canada to Texas. Early shows found them sharing the stage with fellow New York and Boston bands such as DNA, Bush Tetras, Liquid Liquid, Mission of Burma, Raybeats, and Swans. Their prominence grew as their presence was increasingly felt within the downtown scene and the band found themselves at various times serving as the house band at both CBGBs and Danceteria, venues that are both now gone, but nonetheless remain legendary for the pivotal role they played in the club scene at the time. Certain General were almost synonymous with that scene, becoming ubiquitous hosts at such other venues as the Mudd Club, the Peppermint Lounge, The Rat, 9:30 Club, and downtown's Hoboken, NJ annex, Maxwell's. They would remain staples of this scene for several years. In 1982, the group signed with the New York independent record label Labor Records and recorded their debut, 'Holiday of Love'. The five-song EP was produced by Peter Holsapple of the The dB's and mixed by Michael Gira of fellow Labor Records label mates Swans. [SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA

Big Red Stain / La Otra Cara De Un Jardín ‎– Chronicle Of Consumptive Irritation / Brikollage [Cass] (1986, Sound Of Pig)

La Otra Cara De Un Jardín is the pseudonym used by the multidisciplinary artist Francisco Felipe from Madrid. Under this mysterious name, he develops a strong collage of processed sounds that reminds us of the sound experiments of foreign projects such as the French Etant Donnes. In 1986, the split 'Chronicle Of Consumptive Irritation / Brikollage' was released for the Sound of Pig label (U.S. Industrial / Experimental / Electronic / Noise tape label run by Al Margolis in New York), together with Big Red Stain (Karin Flectcher, U.S.A.). Aerial FX ‎– Watching The Dance [LP] (1982, Kamera Records)

'Watching The Dance' presents a tortured form of new-wave and synth-pop, that is at times reminiscent of the ethereal atmospheres of Modern Eon ("Out Of The Window") or early Simple Minds ("Accident"). Aerial FX are also clearly aware of the art-rock of the 70's, particularly the angst of Roxy Music and Van der Graaf Generator, as the 8-minute "Where is Tomorrow" proves. In short, another interesting (and cult) new-wave record. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC

100 Flowers ‎– Drawing Fire [12''] (1984, Happy Squid Records)

Arriving a year after the group's sole full-length album, the five-song EP 'Drawing Fire', 100 Flowers' final release, shows that things were still flying high artistically for the trio. The leadoff track, "Bunkers," uses calm (but by no means sweet) backing vocals and all manner of found sounds to add to the crisp drive of the song. "Long Arm of the Social Sciences" avoids having to come up with lyrics to match the great title by being a chugging instrumental with some fine guitar from Johansen, something he also provides, in a weirdly sweet way, to "Triage." "Contributions" meshes attractive guitar chimes with an uneasy droning buried deep in the mix and extremely disturbing lyrics from Talley-Jones, while "Let's Not" wraps it up with a last little kick of energy and art / thrash. Vocoder ‎– Vocoder [LP] (1987, Neon Danza)

Vocoder was formed in 1981 in Zaragoza. Antonio Laval and Ildefonso Olarte, young high school classmates, together with Antonio Tenas, from Radio Juventud, formed this group inspired by the "Movida Madrileña" and the synth-pop. With the incorporation of Pilar Pellicer they have a positive response of Neon Danza (Discos DRO) that leads to record the Maxi 'What Happens Now' in 1984, 'Mindanao' in 1985 and the LP 'Vocoder' in 1987, published in several countries of South America. Un Département ‎– Un Département [Cass] (1984, Illusion Production)

Un Département was a French Minimal Wave and Experimental Rock trio formed in 1980 in Orléans and disbanded in 1985. Members were Marcel Kanche (saxophone, vocals), Phil Gaz (bass, drums, guitar, and keyboards) and Bruno Tollard. They released one 7” and one 12” 1981, one tape in 1984 and one LP in 1985 (‘Le Album’). After Un Département disbanded Marcel Kanche was in various punk bands that allowed him share stage with, among others, Les Rita Mitsouko, Pere Ubu, Alan Vega or The Cure. This tape sounds like a meeting between Foetus and Smegma, and Steven Stapleton lurking quietly.

Tiny Desk Unit ‎– Naples [12''] (1981, 9½ x 16" Records)

Tiny Desk Unit was a psychedelic dance band playing around Washington DC in 1979. In its short and fiery history Tiny Desk Unit released one LP and one EP on its 9½" x 16" record label. The band first formed, rehearsed and performed at dc space on September 11th 1979. When the 9:30 Club opened its doors on May 30th 1980, Tiny Desk Unit was the first band to take the stage. The band rehearsed in the rat infested basement of the 9:30 Club and many of the band members lived within a few blocks of the club. On a few occasions Tiny Desk Unit were joined on stage by some of their favorite people, include Julius Hemphill of World Saxophone Quartet fame, and Laurie Anderson. Tiny Desk Unit stopped playing together in the winter of 1981. [SOURCE: DISCOGS

Los Seres Vacios ‎– La Casa De La Imperfección [12''] (1982, 3 Cipreses)

The birth of Los Seres Vacios at the end of 1982 was due to the constant creative activity of Ana Isabel Fernandez (Ana Curra) and Eduardo Benavente who, not happy with the success they were having with Paralisis Permanente, decided to create this new group. Los Seres Vacios are framed in the sinister Spanish wave, although with its own style. Their songs are capable of creating dark atmospheres, dark but always with subtlety. Los Seres Vacios edited three EPs, all of them on the Tres Cipreses label. The first of them, 'La Casa de la Imperfección', was published in 1982 and produced by Eduardo Benavente. The Rip ‎– Stormed Port [12''] (1987, Flying Nun Records)

The Rip is a notoriously (lyrically) morose and musically upbeat second wave Dunedin post-punk group with one EP, the thrashy and melodic 'A Timeless Peace' to their name. In 1987, The Rip will add another record, the 'Stormed Port' EP. More a solo Alastair Galbraith project than a group effort, the second record has classic Rip tracks such as ‘Entropic Carol’ joining the more challenging and impressionistic work that anticipates the composer’s solo years.
