Philip Sanderson, Michael Denton – Telephone Music [Cass] (1986, Telephone Music)

Born in 1960, Philip Sanderson first began experimenting with reel to reel tape recorders and rewired ‘circuit bent’ electronic equipment in his teens. He compiled his first cassette 'Dark Cuttings' in 1977 and in 1978 formed the Snatch Tapes label releasing 'Snach Tapes 1' the first outing for Claire Thomas & Susan Vezey and Storm Bugs (a collaborative project with Steven Ball). 1980 saw the release of 'Snatch Tapes 2' and the first Storm Bugs EP entitled 'Table Matters' as well as the cassette release, 'Reprint' by Claire Thomas & Susan Vezey, and 'A Safe Substitute' by Storm Bugs. Both tapes featured the quirky British synthesizer the VCS3 as the main instrument. The following year 1981, "Bright Waves" by Thomas & Vezey was the opening track on the Cherry Red 'Perspectives And Distortion' LP and a second Storm Bugs single was released on the French L’invitation au Suicide label.

In the early 1980s Sanderson collaborated with David Jackman (of Organum fame), Clip from Orior, Michael Denton, as well as recording with the chanteuse Naomi. From this came two more tape releases in the shape of '0º North' and 'Telephone Music'.

'Telephone Music' was compiled by Philip Sanderson, with sleeve layout & design by Michael Denton. Between 5-10 copies were made and the tape came in three sleeves. Versions of the tracks: "Maps, Drinks & Aeroplanes", and "Spy Garden (Tale Chase)" were re-issued on the 2018 LP 'On One Of These Bends' by Philip Sanderson (Séance Centre, 11SC). "Merry Christmas Adolf" is also known as "Teal Blue & Silver". [SOURCE: SÉANCE CENTRE]

Orquesta De Las Nubes – Manual Del Usuario [LP] (1987, Grabaciones Accidentales)

Orquesta De Las Nubes formed in 1980 by Suso Saiz and percussionist Pedro Estevan when the two met whilst studying a course on Techniques of Contemporary Composition in Madrid. Sharing a curiosity for American minimalist and Non-Western music, the pair began to share music through many listening sessions, during which the idea slowly evolved to try and make music together. Pedro’s partner at the time, soprano singer María Villa, would later join the two on vocals. With Suso’s sparse use of guitar loops, synthesizers, and drum computers in combination with the hypnotic percussion of Pedro Estevan and the wordless drifting vocals of María Villa, Orquesta De La Nubes would evolve as a group with a truly unique musical language; an ethereal and almost otherworldly musical realm.

In their third album 'Manual Del Usuario', released in 1987 by GASA, one can perceive a much more elaborate and better production work than on the first two. They have truly magical moments that make you believe you are listening to the Mexican musician Jorge Reyes, in his excellent album 'Comala'. Jorge Reyes, when he was in Spain in the mid-eighties, became friends with the members of Orquesta De Las Nubes, and the album 'Manual Del Usuario' was also released in Mexico under Jorge's label, Producciones Exilio. No Safety – This Lost Leg [LP] (1989, RecRec Music)

No Safety was a New York based progressive rock band formed by harpist, pianist, and accordionist Zeena Parkins, formally of Skeleton Crew and News From Babel and featuring avant-rock great Tim Hodgkinson. The band also included guitarists Chris Cochrane and Doug Seidel, bassist Ann Rupel, and drummer Pippin Branett. They released this first album, 'This Lost Leg', in 1989 before being joined by DJ David Shea for their second album, 'Spill' in 1992. The band also released a split with The Flying Luttenbachers in 1994 before disbanding. With their intricate drum-heavy sound and catchy vocals they are a band not to be missed, with a sound most similar to that of the also great Dog Faced Hermans. [SOURCE: PROG ARCHIVES]

Moe Tucker – Moejadkatebarry [12''] (1987, 50,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Watts Records)

Moe Tucker's second recording project is a collaborative EP with Jad Fair, founder of the avant-garde group Half Japanese, guitarist Kate Messer and bassist Barry Stock (hence the title). A handful of weeks in a makeshift studio (a garage) for a repertoire consisting mostly of covers, including two obscure songs by The Velvet Underground ("Guess I'm Falling In Love" and especially the torrential "Hey Mr. Rain", perhaps in its most successful version ever recorded); the new "Jad Is A Fink" crowns the experiment, one of the few happy moments in Moe's solo affair. La Otra Cara De Un Jardín – Noche Gruesa [Cass] (1985, Not On Label)

La Otra Cara De Un Jardín is the pseudonym used by the multidisciplinary artist Francisco Felipe from Madrid. Under this mysterious name, he develops a strong collage of processed sounds that reminds us of the sound experiments of foreign projects such as the French Etant Donnes. Kilgore Trout – Bad Puddings [12''] (1989, Thunderball Records)

Kilgore Trout is an alternative rock band that was based in Nottingham and Sheffield in the north of England between 1985 and 1991. In that time Kilgore Trout released two EPs, contributed eight tracks to two compilation LPs, and appeared on a flexidisc that came free with the legendary fanzine Ablaze! This band's mainstay was Chris Trout, a seminal figure in the British alternative music scene, who has also worked with Bear, A.C. Temple, Spoonfed Hybrid, Lazerboy, Coping Saw and Smokers Die Younger. Trout wrote the songs and played most of the instruments in Kilgore Trout. He also recorded over 50 four-track demos for the band that were never released at the time. [SOURCE: LAST.FM]

Jim O'Rourke – It Takes Time To Do Nothing [Cass] (1990, Audiofile Tapes)

Since emerging in the late '80s, composer, guitarist, producer, and all-around musical polymath Jim O'Rourke's wide-ranging output has found audiences with experimental jazz and noise fans, chill room denizens, indie rockers, and bedroom experimentalists, and bridged gaps between some otherwise isolated compositional communities. As a guitarist, he is recognized for his work with prepared guitar in improvisational settings, and also for playing with noise rock pioneers Sonic Youth, in Loose Fur with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and Glenn Kotche, and for David Grubbs' experimental rock group Gastr del Sol, just to name a few. He has also released over 30 solo albums, spanning singer / songwriter fare, adventurous post-rock, noise and tape experiments, ambient pieces, and pastoral instrumentals, with a knack for combining them into idiosyncratic art song. His 1989 solo debut, 'Some Kind of Pagan', experimented with prepared guitar and field recordings, while his 1997 Drag City label debut, 'Bad Timing', veered into more standard song forms. Some diverse highlights of his prolific career also include teaching the child actors the songs for Richard Linklater's film "School of Rock" (2003), winning a Grammy for producing Wilco's album 'A Ghost Is Born' (2004), and playing guitar and piano on Richard Thompson's score for the Werner Herzog documentary "Grizzly Man" (2005). Over 25 years into his recording career, he cracked the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart in 2015 with his solo LP 'Simple Songs'.

He first picked up the guitar at the age of six, but it wasn't until O'Rourke studied composition at DePaul University that his interest in the less-obvious possibilities of the instrument led him through the early catalogs of the post-classical and electro-acoustic traditions. While at DePaul, O'Rourke completed much of the work that would constitute his first few releases. He also had the opportunity to meet noted improvisational guitarist Derek Bailey, who invited O'Rourke to play at the British Improv Festival Company Week, leading to further collaborative projects with Bailey, Henry Kaiser, Eddie Prevost, and David Jackman. O'Rourke began working with Dan Burke's Illusion of Safety project in the early '90s, and released three albums through Staalplaat and Tesco before moving on to form experimental "rock" group Gastr del Sol with David Grubbs.
