Room Nine ‎– Voices...... Of A Summers Day [LP] (1987, C'est La Mort)

Room Nine represented a different look to the '80s Seattle music scene. Formed in the early '80s, Room Nine's moody psychedelia didn't garner the press or radio attention that the city's post-punk acts eventually did. Comprised of Ron Rudzitis (vocals), Michael Laton (guitar), Scott Boggan (bass), and Shawn Allen (drums), Room Nine was an integral part of Seattle underground rock. During Room Nine's early days, Rudzitis' home was called the Room Nine House, a place where local musicians socialized after gigs. Rudzitis shared the home with Feast drummer Dan Peters and renowned Seattle photographer Charles Peterson. Rudzitis changed his name to Ron Nine, and Allen was replaced by Scott Vanderpool. In 1988, Room Nine released the critically acclaimed LP 'Voices...On a Summer's Day' on C'est La Mort Records. The track "Sea Without a Shore" was a hit on college-radio stations, and the band even took second place on one of MTV's Basement Tapes contests. After Room Nine broke up in the late '80s, Nine formed Love Battery with Peters, former Green River and Mother Love Bone bassist Bruce Fairweather, and ex-Crisis Party guitarist Kevin Witworth. Pel Mel ‎– No Word From China [7''] (1981, Primate Records)

Pel Mel were an Australian post-punk music band, which formed in Newcastle in mid-1979 and moved to Sydney in late 1980. They issued two studio albums, 'Out of Reason' (1982) and 'Persuasion' (1983). They toured until the end of 1984 and then disbanded. Pel Mel's first single, 'No Word From China', was originally recorded at the Double Jay radio station and gathered so much interest that it was rush released on the band's own label, Primate Records, in January 1981. The band performed the song on the nationally broadcast music show, "Countdown". It's catchy but not silly, it's romantic but not dull, it's simple but not straight. It was subsequently re-mastered and re-released through GAP Records in June 1981. [SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA

Omega Tribe ‎– Angry Songs [7''] (1982, Crass Records)

Considering when this was released, this is almost a pre-take on pop punk in a way, with a bunch of ska influences to it. In general rather soft and melodic material, with nice basslines and very tight fast drumming. Although the tempo is quite high in the tracks, it feels like the tracks are slightly longer than normal punk tracks. Good production and a rather good take on the punk in general, as this spews out attitude, yet is very melodic and rather smooth to the style. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC]

Mieses Gegonge ‎– Live [Cass] (1985, Dom)

Mieses Gegonge was an alternate name used by H.N.A.S. While creating name for their band (around 1983), members had two choices left: H.N.A.S. (Hirsche Nicht Aufs Sofa) and Mieses Gegonge, and as P. Li Khan says "as we couldn't agree on one name for the then-imminent 'Abwassermusik' LP, we choose both, leaving the listener alone with the guesses who Mieses Gegone were" [SOURCE: DISCOGS]

The Loft ‎– 1982-1985 Once Round The Fair [LP] (1989, Creation Records)

An excellent compilation that gathers this short-lived group's output. The Loft never quite got the attention they deserved as a guitar pop band. The fact that they were on Creation Records and later turned into The Weather Prophets seemed to often overshadow the band's music. The complete, stumbling, perfect imperfections of "Why Did the Rain" highlight the group's strong points, with distinct, melodic guitar leads over a jangling rhythm section. Tracks like this one helped set the stage for the direction of indie pop over the next 20 years. The warm production emphasizes a classic structure that draws from The Velvet Underground, Television, and The Byrds. A crisper production follows on the rest of the tracks, but this short collection never falters in song quality. "Skeleton Staircase" lightly drones and jangles as Pete Astor croons is his faltering, song-speak way. Andy Strickland's clean guitar work balances out the uneven moments. "Winter" is another fine track, with the vocals and guitar raised to the very front of the track as the muffled drums carry the back. It could easily be mistaken for something off of the Flying Nun roster. "Up the Hill and Down the Slope" is the group's swan song -endemic of their entire output- a seemingly tangled mess of guitars and crooked melodies, but structured to perfection. King Blank ‎– The Real Dirt [CD] (1988, Situation Two)

Heir to the existential angst of such late-'70s luminaries as John Lydon and Tom Verlaine, England's Ian Lowery (whose first recorded musical strivings were with a late-'70s punk band, The Wall) talk-sings in that wonderfully curdled sneer we've heard a million times before. But few do it as well. Going out on his own under the King Blank moniker, Lowery continued his wicked ways on the three-track 'Mouth Off', featuring the input of Screaming Blue Messiahs honcho Bill Carter, who produced and played on one song and co-wrote two. With the Messiahs backing him on the title track, Lowery seems newly dangerous, even throwing in a good imitation of a shivering fit. Lowery then assembled some sympathetic sidemen and turned King Blank into a real band. Mimicking Dylan's 'Bringing It All Back Home' on the cover of 'The Real Dirt', Lowery broadened his range without any reduction in arrogance. Thanks to his versatile sidemen, he's able to touch on rockabilly, woozy ballads, vicious boogie, a chugging throwback to The Velvet Underground ("Uptight"), even bogus country music ("Bulletproof t", as in crucifix). Nasty and delectable. [SOURCE: TROUSER PRESS

Jasmine Minks ‎– One Two Three Four Five Six Seven, All Good Preachers Go To Heaven [LP] (1984, Creation Records)

Most known for being one of the first bands on Alan McGee's Creation label, The Jasmine Minks were formed in early-'80s London. Initially a trio centered around singer Jim Shepard, the band went through numerous lineup shuffles throughout their lengthy, bumpy, and ultimately resilient history. The band's diverse musical interests, which ranged from the punk end of the Buzzcocks and Subway Sect to the more experimental likes of Cabaret Voltaire and DAF and to the more classic likes of Motown and Love, prevented them from being a simple pop band. Alan McGee signed the band on the strength of witnessing a lengthy rehearsal at the band's Waterloo hideout and picked the songs that would become the band's first single. With organ and production help from Joe Foster and Dave Musker from Television Personalities, the 'Think!' single was released in 1984. After another single, the '1234567 All Good Preachers Go to Heaven' EP was released, felt by many to be their finest moment. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC]

In Embrace were an English alternative music band formed in Leicestershire in 1981 and later based in Coventry. They released seven singles, two albums and an EP/mini-album before splitting up in 1987. The band was formed in Leicestershire in 1981 by Gary Knight (vocals, keyboards, guitar) and Cameron Lindo (guitar, keyboards, vocals). The duo had previously been in the short-lived post-punk band, 3-Way Dance but, inspired by the likes of Eyeless in Gaza, Bron Area, Durutti Column and Young Marble Giants formed In Embrace to explore a broader emotional palette. Hartmann / Bourbonese Qualk ‎– Music While You Work [Cass] (1985, ADN)

Bourbonese Qualk began in Southport (UK) in 1979 when Simon Crab and his brother Ted began working together to create experimental music grounded in a DIY anarchistic spirit. Ca. 1982 after moving in a squat in London Julian Gilbert and Steven Tanza become members. They run the Ambulance Station as open culture space with an own studio, place for rehearsals, exhibitions and performances, printer workshops etc. and manifested their publications under the umbrella Recloose Organisation. Julian Gilbert left during 1985 to pursue a different path and Steven Tanza around 1986 working as The State in music and concentrating on art projects. From 1986 onwards Owen If (Rossitter) on percussion and multi-instrumentalist / guitarist Miles Miles became core members alongside big contributions by Kif Cole. They stayed true to their origins, stylistically uncompromising publishing and touring whenever they wanted with full control of their music, image and graphics. In late 2002 the band officially disbanded in the wake of the death of member Miles Miles

Hartmann was Thomas Scholz, also member of German experimental unit T.A.S.S. II. [SOURCE: DISCOGS]

God ‎– Breach Birth [12''] (1990, Situation Two)

U.K. musician and writer Kevin Martin started God, one of his many musical projects, thanks to an unlikely but inspired source -Mark E. Smith. The Fall frontman contacted Martin in 1987 to ask him for a submission for 'Disparate Cognescenti', a compilation Smith was then planning for release on the Cog Sinister label. Initially, Martin's main musical partner was Shane Rogan, who handled guitar while Martin concentrated on tenor sax and vocals. There was no set God lineup or even a particular musical style for the remainder of the '80s, with the two working with a variety of players while Martin's energy went in part to running London's Mule Club, where God often performed alongside bands like Napalm Death and Godflesh. Guitarist Justin Broadrick, veteran of the former and leader of the latter, soon befriended Martin, helping to produce the band's debut release, 'Breach Birth', a 1990 EP on Situation Two Records. Fco. Felipe ‎– C 1 [Cass] (1986, Grand Mal Edicions)

Multidisciplinary artist Francisco Felipe (also known as La Otra Cara De Un Jardín) from Madrid develops a strong collage of processed sounds that remind the sound experiments of foreign projects such as the French Etant Donnes. In 1981 he published his first self-produced industrial music cassette with the same title for Tic-Tac records. In 1982, he recorded the single 'Búsqueda de Consuelo en los Amaneceres Fríos' also for Tic-Tac records. One year later, he collaborates in the compilation 'Anthems 2' of the Italian label Trax. In 1985, he is included in the compilation cassette 'Codex' by IEP. Shortly afterwards, he published 'Breve Jornada por un Jardín Cerrado' where he collected extracts from his first cassette. In 1986, the split 'Chronicle Of Consumptive Irritation / Brikollage' was released for the Sound of Pig label, together with the group Big Red Stain (Karin Flectcher, U.S.A.). Also from that year, a production of the musician Juan Teruel's label, Discos Proceso Uvegraf, entitled 'Conspiración', appears. He is also included in the compilation 'The World, The Flesh and The Devil' by the French label Déviation Culturelles. [SOURCE: GRUPOS NACIONALES NUEVA OLA 80

Elliott Sharp ‎– Virtual Stance [LP] (1986, Dossier)

'Virtual Stance' presented some of Elliott Sharp's earliest works involving the sampler which had just begun to find its way into the downtown New York City avant scene in the mid-'80s. It's used here most often as a generator of percussive sounds derived from his homemade instruments, sometimes in tandem with a drum machine. To his credit, Sharp rarely allows the latter to fall into the static patterns so common at the time, rhythms that doubtlessly sounded cool then but, in retrospect, seem completely sterile. All of the music, composed originally as a dance score, is performed by the duo of Sharp and the then-young-and-unknown drummer Bobby Previte. The self-designed instruments sampled tend to be of the type whose strings are usually struck instead of bowed (pantar, slab, rack), so, combined with Sharp's typically atonal guitar work, the general feel of the album is percussive in nature, although the closing "Wrap It Up," full of odd, bowed-sounding tones, is ravishing. By "limiting" his palette thusly, he's able to concentratedly investigate this realm and displays evident glee in doing so. Less song-based than much of his work both prior to and after this release, 'Virtual Stance' has something of the air of science experiment but still largely succeeds on a visceral level, wedding the harsh propulsiveness of his first albums (like 'I/S/M' and 'Carbon') with the mathematically tinged explorations of works like 'Marco Polo's Argali'. It's a strong release and one that Sharp fans will certainly enjoy. [SOURCE: ALLMUSIC]
