Of Cabbages And Kings ‎– Basic Pain Basic Pleasure [LP] (1990, Triple X Records)

Released by Triple X Records, who were ordinarily known for releasing punk rock albums in their heyday, comes some rather avant-garde noise rock brought to you by Of Cabbages and Kings, their first of two records done for the label.

The star of the show first and foremost in the band's sound is the rumbling bass (handled by vocalist Algis) and secondly, the drumming, which is just relentlessly pounding and unique. That said, Of Cabbages and Kings aren't like most other noise rock bands, who seem primarily concerned with splattering their listener's brains. No, 'Basic Pain Basic Pleasure' is a more evocative, immersive, and atmospheric affair. It's slow-creeping, and haunting, with queasy riffs, and an undercurrent of romanticism. When Algis isn't sounding like dude from Killdozer, he reminds of Chris Isaak.

Speaking of "Crawl," the drumming just insane, but gears quickly shift again when it's followed by the beautiful "Crawl Again" and its gothic keyboards. It reminds of something Type O Negative would be doing in a few years time. Of Cabbages and Kings save the best for last, though -the near 9 min. closing epic, "John Barleycorn Must Die." Verdict: seriously underrated stuff. Great album. [SOURCE: RATE YOUR MUSIC
