Robert Rental was the stage name of Robert Donnachie (1952–2000), a British pioneer of the post-punk DIY industrial electronic music scene in the United Kingdom. 'Mental Detentions' has special charm due to casette-only release and these early industrial/synth soundscapes sound very "modern", especially in the context of contemporary wave of lo-fi psychodelic collage improvisers. Here and there it sounds almost like your favourite James Ferraro memory tapes cut up stream of consciousness, without any structure or narrative qualities, so it looks like history repeats itself again.
